woow so you telling me that if one person have the buildingplans and material list of a evil robot or even a terminator, you could make one? complete with the gun to go with it?? ^^ dude that is so cool you totaly rock :-D do you know if the military is intressed in these machines?
@Shapeways Hey there, do you know if US aircraft carriers now have a 3D printer on board for repairs and replacement parts while at sea? I feel like I've heard that before somewhere though. ;)
Just a question... Isn't it possible for people to print out gunparts and assemble a pistol ? if so, do these printers have a protection against that?
@Frankydoesitalso most 3d printers have software which prevents you from making gun parts, knives, thermonuclear warheads, giant robots, f-14 tomcats, or bazookas. unfortunately, the software cannot prevent you from fabricating a time machine, then going back to before the software was developed and making whatever you want. i wish we could live in a world where time-traveling maniacs were prevented from using innocent prototyping machines to do their nefarious bidding, but we don't.
@shrimpkins I guess there should be strict licensing and registration then, to whomever wishes to buy and use such a machine. A 7 year training school maybe and one needs to be of unspoken behavior, rather someone who has been living with his mother untill he was 39...
@Frankydoesitalso one possible solution to this impending threat to civilized society might be to program these machines with isaac asimov's 3 laws of robotics, which dictate that a machine can never harm a human, or allow a human to be harmed. of course, by "programming" i mean tearing a page out of asimov's book and manually feeding it into whichever slot in the machine looks like it can accommodate a sheet of paper. only then can we be sure that order is restored.
Only an idiot would make a gun out of this. You'd end up killing yourself before you killed anyone... Just like airsoft guns being modified to shoot real bullets...
@krap101 I do not think any airsoft gun can be converted into a real gun. The idea even is absurde. Either you are a nut that has never seen an airsoftun upclose or you must be mistaken with a pelletrifle. Airsoft is made for little plastic balls and is driven by an electric motor or compressed gas. I just cannot believe anyone ever tried to make an airsoft gun to fire real bullets. That is a myth. My question only related to theory. Hypothetically a gun could be made on a 3d printer...
@Frankydoesitalso That was my point. The ATF confiscated a few pallets of airsoft guns saying they could be modified to shoot real bullets. The thing is, as someone actually did this to prove them wrong, you'd need to remove basically everything and replace it with real steel, to actually not kill yourself in the process.
Sure the gun could be made, but what makes it so easy to produce will also inherently make it very weak. CNC on the other hand is almost as easy, but is actually viable
@krap101 See, what I was ultimately wondering about was this: if a gun could be printed out just like that would it enhance the democratization of society the same way the bookprinting process or nowadays the internet has done. Once the people have unlimited access to information or power/violenceequalizers, no longer having to be dependent on governmentmonopolies on information and violence, will it help humanity further in its everlasting quest for freedom and personal sovereignty???
@Frankydoesitalso If a person wants a gun, there are plans readily available all over the internet on how to make one from an smg out of plumbing parts, to a slapstick shotgun. Suppressing a technology because of fear is more than a bit retarded.
@xarlock667 I suppress my guns and ammunition in a locked cabinet to keep my kids from getting too wild. I'm afraid they'd harm and or kill themselves if I gave them free reign over a shotgun and its shells. Now make the analogy to society.
@Ryanty12 yes, please, solder your eyeballs. Make sure you use really really acidic flux as well. Hopefully you'll fully disolve / melt your retinas in the process.
@Ryanty12 That's because you didn't understand the genius behind how it was made and what something like this represents for the future of manufacturing.
It shows the properties of the Moebius strip, notice that at one point they seem to be on opposite sides then both on the same side, that is because it only has one continuous side.
Yes they were, the entire thing was made in one piece, in one go.
In this process the stainless steel part is cured and infused with more metal after printing. And there are several types of finishing you can then do in order to get a bronze look, or a stainless steel one.
so you got a 3d printer you could have printed anything and you choose to print that crap?

@Frankydoesitalso you could in theory print out gun parts, or anything really...
Recently a company realized they were 3D printing housing for ATM card skimmers for a client and reported them to the local police.

cheeseboat15 2 years ago
The stainless is printed with binder just like you describe, then is sintered to burn out the binder and fused with bronze.
