french kisses....like the oppressed yearning for connection, love and solidarity...yet they've been beaten down so much the only way they can do so is through violence. beautiful lyrics
Overdosed on the Roses after years of listening but hearing this one again for the first time in ages reminds me why I consider them to be the best band ever.
Everyone is going all "Anarchy In The UK" when they think of the London riots. I think this represents the London riots better. Something less furious yet quite a message.
this album has significance to me. and you wouldnt understand, so i'm not going to explain. but my mum and dad used to tell me to listen to elvis, the beatles and dylan - because one day i would understand, and i did. anybody who hasnt heard this album, do it now. it will all make sense. x
fuck it would be a dsream come true the roses gettin back together but i just cant see it mani is settled in primal scream and ian seems happy enough doin his own stuff , but imagine it their first gig back together it would be the concert of the decade tickets would be like gold dust but it would be the bizznizz eh!! we can only but dream please some 1 some where make it happen zzzz if it did happen id think i was dreamin!!!
A few rumours fluttering about recently about a re-union but i wish instead of talking about it they'd just fucking do it! Superb band who have unfinished business to work on.
@seanrafferty100 They need the right producers and be able to shunt their differences between themselves. Get as much to the '89 sound and energy as possible.
Saw them at La Cigalle in Pigalle, Paris July 89 along with The Felt and the La's amazing gig, in the middle of Bye Bye Badman someone let a tear gas canister off mid mosh pit and everyone cleared out. When it cleared Ian Brown came back on stage saying "You should sucked a lemon like me".
Can't say I've been a massive fan , liked some of their tunes & knew about their well respected & highly influential place in the "BritPop scene" for lack of a better description BUT never knew of their political awareness. This song is a real eye AND ear opener. Brilliant song in all respects.
2/2: What at first seems to be a simple pop song with thinly veiled references to violence on par with our favorite murder ballads is instead a powerful paean to a failed but influential political uprising. Take THAT, Paula Abdul!
1/2: The cover of the Stone Roses debut is a Pollack inspired splatter piece with three stripes on the left and three lemon slices strewn across the canvass. The stripes are red, white, and blue but are not a reference to Britain’s reciprocal love affair with the USA, it’s a tribute to the French student uprising in 1968; the lemons they sucked to counteract tear gas. With that in mind, listen to/read the lyrics to “Bye Bye Badman” and tell me they’re not brilliant.
@supersigh70 the fall r a gr8 band seriously underated but not in the same league as the stone roses,i left oasis out 2 another gr8 mcr band but i only liked there early 90s stuff.
Good Drummers line up with bands like the Roses, bad drummers end in the Police drumming on riotees (and I do NOT refer to Stewart Copeland with that, hahaha) ...
He def influenced my politics with songs like this and when I read about his dislike of national flags at gigs and what he did when someone had one in the crowd. Tho' his religiosity and mysticism especially on Second Coming pisses me off to this day, I also think he's an idealist, not to be confused with utopian. Anyway, when all is said and done I love this song.
me too mate !! if you ever feel down just play the roses 1st album - brings a smile right back to my face !! thats the thing with the stone roses - if you see someone wearing an ' elephant stone ' t-shirt or some other piece of roses memorabelia you just know that the chances are they are on your wavelength !! does that make sense ? " Its not where your from, it's where your at !! " - TAKE A BOW MR BROWN !!!!!
Damon365420 you dumb shit: The American Civil war was a fight between the English and the English. It was pilgrims from England who colonised the US, exploited its potential, became the richest folk on Earth at the time and then, in a style typical of whinging 21st century yanks, demanded tax relief from London (i.e. the hand that fed them). Sadly, in granting you this all that's left is a fundamentalist Christian state full of bigots and thugs! Grow a dick!
well done garage flower, this is fkn awesome. the hairs all over my body stand up when i watch this. it just brings an already fucking mindblowing track to life. nice work my friend. stone roses till i die ( and afterwards as this is my farewell tune )
If I'm not mistaken, the John Squire painting on the album cover (the self titled debut almub this song is featred on) is also titled 'Bye Bye Badman'. It even has a 'french flag' in the upper left hand corner.
you're right. it is about the french students protestign against war. the fruits on the cover represent them pouring the juice in their eyes to prevent damage from tear gas.

Hopefully the Roses will get back together and do a few more albums.
No reason why not, and they still have all the talent in the world.
Led Zeppelin were together from 68 to 80, Roses from 83 to 95.
Zeppelin only ended with death of Bonham.
No excuse for Roses, as Reni never died, he just walked away.
