high technology -> todays japanese industry

battle suits -> japanese gundam manga

Overall design and feeling of the Tau Empire -> Japanese Empire

1st image is a Triax X-1000 "Ulti-Max" power armor suit from Palladium Books, Rifts Sourcebook 1.

Definitely has some Tau like lines, I'm tempted to try to model some Crisis Suits to match it.

Look at the fluff, and youse may realise that the tau are not being responded to as threats, as the imperium deemed them unworthy opponents, as they have better things to do.

Then, if you look at the domecus crusade, the tau are being pushed back by a force marginally smaller than theirs. they were getting their arses handed to them, until hive fleet kraken came along, and the imperium had to withdraw to deal with them.

umm, the battle suit design are based on gundam, but firewarrior design are based on ancient Chinese imperial foot soldiers and the philosphy is based on Chinese communist indoctrination.

And to Sabremk42 the first pic was a concept drawing of a tau battlesuit in the year 2000 (before the tau empire was even realeased)

When the original idea for tau vehicles was to have progressivley larger battlesuits than tanks and the like, however (much to my dissapointment) this idea was dropped and now is a very common thread opened on multiple gaming websites usually called something along the lines of to "Tau Titans".
