I was lucky enough to visit H.R. Giger Museum in Gruyeres, Switzerland. It was fantastic, even more so was the bar they have inside. You sit in a mausoleum type room that looks EXACTLY like the Aliens hive structure. I was so overwhelmed I had to rush to the ladies room and cry. Sounds so dumb but it's an almost surreal experience I still can't fully describe many months later..
This video mostly shows his works that Inspired the Xeno but a few of Giger's work has been used in other films after Alien. Even the scene from the film End of Days, where Gabriel Byrne's Satan is having sex with the woman and they fused together was partly inspired by one of his paintings. And the film Spieces again inspired by his Necronom IV artwork. A very werid but great artist H R Giger.
@Fredrock1982 Thats exactly wot it is, Giger like every genius was abit weird, a true artist in that he let his Imagination totally run away with him, and explored sum pretty dark territory. Ridley sed wen he visited him in Zürich, much of his work was very disturbing, Scott mentioned one painting of a mother and child that had fused together, in a horrible birth and death Image. But the one painting that caught Scotts eye was Necronom IV, which inspired the Xenomorph.
@Fredrock1982 Dan O'Bannon cited Necronom IV as a direct inspiration for Alien because the creature in the picture was ambiguous; it could be male or female, and because "it could just as easily fuck you before it killed you." Giger is certainly a genius, but he is almost certainly also a sexual freak, which just adds to the brilliance of his work because it hits on such a primal level.
I wish H.R. Giger would get an entire movie based on his art. Like the Alien films taken up a notch. Not just creatures, I mean whole worlds, architecture, technology done by him. It would be so dementedly awesome. Or a video game RPG staring his biomechanics at the least. His work really hasn't been utilized that much compared to other artists. More video games and movies should make use of his talents.
His amalgamation of neonatal trauma; play on phobias of suppressed femininity, uniformity, and expiration; and consistent stance on this technological strand of suicide; works to make him one of the most profound, expressive minds of the last half-century.
The music that plays during this vid is simply wonderful! Fits perfectly with Scotts/Gigers visceral, almost sexual, vision of the alien. God I hope Prometheus is like this and not the poor Alien 3 and Alien 4.
Aliens was a great sequel but with a much different feel. Gone was the creepiness and it was more action. The queen idea was not Gigers and was a product of Cameron i think. Not as sickening as the transmorfing idea from the Alien film (cut in original release)
@admiraldma if youll keep thinking like this you wont like prometheus no matter how good from an objective point of view it will actually be. Whats wrong with alien 3? it had something new, yet respected the old school of alien 1 and the action of aliens! i kinda feel you on alien 4 though, i mostly disliked that one too, but it had new things also, it did its best to be innovative with the cross gene thing and all... and i freakin loved the water scene and others!
@admiraldma oh, and theres one thing i fully agree with you - the song is truly exceptional, i watch the alien movies about 1-2 times every year and i gotta admit, the soundtrack of alien 1 (and also added and very respected by style in aliens) is by far a true masterpiece of horror. it actually describes space/mystery/evil imo.
@inner101aggression OK, I might have been a bit harsh on 3 and 4. Dont get me wrong, I do like the films (4 more than 3), but I just dont like them as much as 1 and 2.
@admiraldma oh, sorry for misunderstanding then, you know how people tend to be...either to misinterpret / or to explain in a way that lets more than one interpretation of it.../ or just to see it in their way no matter how good you explain it to them. my bad, i mistook you for one of those "old school" shallow peeps that dislike anything new no matter if its good or not and cant tell whats an opinion(im meeting them too often). anyways, im keeping my fingers crossed for prometheus!
i have always loved this mans art.his over-use of vagina,s ,and penis,es, and bone ,skull have always been the organic brought to new levels....that skull train from dune, the hulls of the ships.....man, !
Goldsmith's music and Giger's work were the peanut butter and jelly for Alien as a whole, If you visualize Alien as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that is..
Out of any creature I've on film, the HR Giger alien was the most fascinating and disturbing thing I've ever seen. It's without a doubt my favorite monster
AWESEOME VIDEO. Does anyone know where all the video images came from? Specifically which Giger books? I would like to have all the collected art of Giger's Alien.
↓ and when i got on the escape ship i would wake up...now let me ask you this why didn't the alien movies give me nightmares but the video game did is it because its interactive and first person....
i didn't have a nightmare about the xenomorph alien until after i played AVP2 a Praetorian alien would keep chasing me through corridors of a space ship and i would have to shut a door and weld it shut to buy me some time and continue running but there were warriors and drones all around me i had to fight the off with a pulse rifle and eventually the praetorian would bust in had to keep moving continually do this until i came to a ladder which lead down to the escape ship
@tayba120 nope, he has many techniques that he tried out but his most known great 'paintings' he created with airbrush- acrylics paint & ink , sort of mixed media thing..he's one of the few purists in modern time and creates his art with incomparable devotion.
...and no layers, ,paste/copy, undo and fuck-up-and-try-as-much-as-you-can mentality of some digital artists (no offence, i'm also busy with digital painting)
@tayba120 I understand why ur asking that, his work has such amazing texture, depth and lighting, his work is absolutely beutiful and very unique to "normal" art people see today. However, a lot of his work he has done was before computers were even made.
@tayba120 In fact, for most of his career, Giger has worked with airbrush, ink and different stencil techniques, but in the midle of 90´s (while he was working in Species) he abandoned the airbrush in favor of markers and pastels.
Personally, I think the computer is a tool overvalued, and the work of painters like HR Giger and Francisco de Goya, are proof that art made by hand is sometimes more powerful and evocative than the hyper-realism and "perfection" that are obtained with the computers
My mom saw the first Alien movie and she liked it so much. When "ALIENS" came out she wanted to see it so bad but couldn't find a babysitter for me ( I was 7 ) So she decided to sneak me inside the movie theater. We sat down right in the middle of the audience so nobody noticed me. Thanks Mom!!!
@witz85 Maybe they never will, but that's what makes the movie so good, remember that half the horror surrounding the alien is that you hardly ever see it (in the first movie anyway), plus all the mystery of where the hell it came from, how it sees, etc. Alien is an excellent example of a psychological thriller aswell as sf-horror.
@witz85 Yea I just read about this today, I still hope they keep the actual origin of the aliens a mystery, doesn't seem nearly as scary to know they we're just created as a bioweapon. I like the idea of no one knowing where they came from or where they've spread to.
@witz85 it really doesnt matter because think of the people who will be working with and compared that to the crew of the original or any film crew from the 70's and early 80's.
im making gigers alien as ture to his work and style as posible chec kthe vid.....love all his work..there is a world within him the details are second to none
Once listened to Giger talk about his mentality of the whole Alien idea! Somehow he saw the entries to the ship as vagina´s, the humans as the sperms traveling towards the eggs! Then it gets nastier! The human is violated by that witch later came to get call facehugger. Gigers words: a penis is forced into the humans throat and lays an embrio! Nasty! Gladly Ridley Scott had things to say to, Giger wanted the long Alien head to be a penis too! Just as the four back spines! Sick genious!
Did you really need to hear Giger say that to see that the entrance(s) were shaped like vaginas? And the alien do have a penis, it's inside its mouth. It uses it use to forcefully thrust upon its victims.
@xBattsey Of course not! It looked obvious in a strange cind of way, but I thought my imagination was at play! To hear that it actualy was intended that way by the creater of the artwork was a strange feeling! Feeling of strange, sick genious! Like a mind of another world! Giger was just the man for the movie!
Beautiful, just, beautiful, Giger is an amazing and original artist, takes your mind to a different world creating a dream of things as if they were real, I've admired his artwork since I was 12 when Alien was released, I'm 42 now, and I do appreciate even more, the film, the artwork, the direction, Giger himself, the movie soundtrak which does enhance this posting, It's a shame for the industry they mixed this unique art with the Predator, it's like a Renoir thrown to the garbage ...
They gradually bastardised the the series after Aliens (although a great sequel it was very different to Ridley Scott's vision). Scott has apparently signed on the direct the prequel - hopefully it will be infused with some intelligence rather than a simple grab for cash. Let's keep our fingers crossed, and maybe they will even get Giger involved - unlikely - but given it was his amazing work/s that gave the Alien life and form it would only be fitting.
I remember being in high school and seeing Alien, I wasn't able to sleep the night before from anticipation (Scott's TV trailer was so evocative and well done). During the movie I'll never forget my friend literally jumping out of his seat at each scare and the chest burster scene was mind blowing to say the least. It still remains one of my all time favourite films.
@xxnightopsxx I have seen Alien about 10 times, and still want to watch the dvd again and again. It was a great movie. Aliens 2 and 3 were good too, but not as great as Alien 1. I hope for a serious version of an Alien 4, if they decide so.
Personally I like all of the Alien films, and to a far lesser extent the AVP films... To me though Alien 3 was a bit weak, the transition to CGI aliens (in some scenes) was too soon and too low budget so the Aliens lost some of their scariness for me. Also about the only interesting thing that happens is when Ripley suey's at the end. as for Alien 4... ever heard of Alien: Resurrection? It came out about 13 years ago, and is in my opinion better than Alien 3.
I like it all the way up to alien 3. after that it was like wth. I kinda want them to actually make a film that gives a lil more history about the aliens not just about what they do. like the derelict ship for instance. they only showed that thing in one movie and that was it. something like that can be used in soooo many ways. I remember how creepy the inside of that ship looked when i first saw it and the weird race that made it.
I agree, I guess Aliens was more of a sci-fi action film than SF-horror... to be honest I probably like it more if only because it expands the Alien 'universe' just enough while remaining terrifying. Good to hear there is some talk of a prequel w/Ridley Scott! I wonder what kind of ground that would cover? because if anything the whole AvP thing is based on the origins or relationships between the three species, which is what you would expect a prequel to deal with...
Predator was brilliant. beautifuly done in most of the film.
the problem was mixing it together. its less like Renoir being thrown to the garbage and more like Renoir meeting Monet after both of them have had extremely terrifying nightmares.
then someone cuts up both of their work and makes a collage. a shitty one at that.
oh i see i remember how they said the in alien 3 special featurette they said the alien takes genes from the body or host. Well in 2:46 the aliens there have a dome too so i guess maybe along the lines there... ya idk just thinking H.R. Giger is an awestriking artist
An incredible artist and technician, but I can't help but wonder if Giger junior was raped by a donkey while his mother laughed and drove nails into his eyes.

I agree on every point. except one.
