wtf been drinkin rye an ginger tooo much, made one but couldn't getter going gonna try makin char cloth and see if that might make er puff.good luck guy's and keep at er.cheers
When you ignite the char cloth, don't keep blowing on it. Just pick it out with a suitable tool into your tinder bundle and then blow. The char cloth will burn longer and you will have more success with igniting your tinder. Good job on the construction, by the way. It looks like you have the hard part down cold. Perhaps a video on how to make your own could be produced? Thank you!
I seen some vids how to make charcoal cloth, you put some cotton cloth in a closed tin can with a hole in it and heat it up in a fire. I will try that.

I have made fire pistons from plexiglas, brass tubes, wood, aluminum, j b weld, etc.. the material does not really matter as long as you can compress the air enough. I have used teflon tape, string and o rings to seal the piston..all work
yup that's me, i meant it as in with a match. I think these pistons are excellent fire starting devices, but not for practicality purpose. I would just carry my $10 DAC water and windproof lighte if I go out into the woods for several days of trekking. The pistons aren't totally independent firestarters because you would need to get char cloth to start it. Like I said, it is an excellent novelty device but I would take a firesteel or a waterproof lighter anyday.
It works because of the chemical equation (P1V1)/T1=(P2V2)/T2. where P is pressure, V is volume and T is temperature, 1 means the variable before you you push the tube in and 2 is after. When you decrease the volume of the tube very quickly, the pressure cannot go up fast enough to compensate. Therefore temperature also goes up very quickly to make up for this. I'm sorry if this is unclear, but I don't have much space to work with.
Take your bundle of whatever that is hold it in the hand that will have the amber in it do your pop thing while holding the bundle then lower the rod as you blow it that way you are quicker.
I heard on you tube that you could use cotton and Vaseline so I tried it with a q tip dipped it in the Vaseline got out my bic lighter it worked well tossed a cap of alcohol in the leaves and then the q tip instant inferno.
Doesn't the metal construction conduct the heat away too fast? Especially with Aluminum. I saw one that was made entirely from wood and it seemed to work even better than those metal ones. I think because the wood doesn't draw the heat away as fast.
the traditional fire pistons are made from hard woods or horn and I did spend the $85 bucks to get one. The one I made works just as good if not better than the one I purchased and only cost me $10.
Could you tell me how to make one & HOW IT WORKS? I heard about this technique on the last camp we did a few weeks ago, but nobody knew how it works. If you can tell me, you'll make me a very happy man.
Think of a diesel engine. You have the heat of compression and when you compress the air in the cylinder at over a 20:1 compression ratio, the air at the top of the cylinder reaches a high temperature (around 900F)
That is what ignites the tinder (or injected diesel fuel in an engine)
no. no you do not get it. compressing the air quickly creates heat, and the flammable material that you put in the end ignites because of that. You can get heats in excess of 800 degrees Farenheit.
That's really exciting!! I wonder what materials do you use for your fire piston, how do you close the holes on one side of the pipes and what caliber do your pipes have?
it a brass tube and an allumimun shaft, I just got the shaft to fit snugly into the brass tube. The ends are sealed with a plumbers putty. Im working on a tutorial for my website. should be done in the next couple of weeks. centerfingerdotcom.

Great video on how to use a fire piston wrong!
To the other idiots asking about charcloth, you can use any small piece of combustible natural material, i.e. tree fungus, bark, rotted wood, etc.

Not really a chemical equation, if you want to understand the PHYSICS behind this look up Boyles law.

I get it now, friction creates a bit of heat than air rushing in to equalize pressure creates the fire. So how do I make one????!

go to centerfinger(dot)com and look in my fire starting section, there is a "how to" there. good luck.
