Also anyone who gets grain make sure you shoot manual, take any gain off, set the iso sensitivity high, and f stop as low as possible. You can also change the shutter speed and keep it as low as possible in very low light situations. This will expose the camera to light longer resulting in brighter images. Also use a tripod to avoid blurry images.
This camera is good for photos and video, If your looking for just video and something thats a little better go with a sony cx110 or 150. You can view more of my footage using all panasonic hmc 40 cams and sony cx 110 and 150's on my business's youtube. search planeviewproductions
I am considering that also, it's either FZ100 (but the grainy pics are unacceptable to me) or Pentax K-x (so clear no-grain pics) as you can see comparatively here dpreview[.]com/previews/panasonicdmcfz100/
@jellowfx Dont go with the fz100, a dslr would be a major upgrade. The same zoom can be achieved by use of a 300mm lens, and teleconverters if needed.
@PeteTheElit3 same zoom? 24x? I don't know much but I thought that since the sensor is bigger, then bulkier lens are needed, so I'm assuming 300mm is bulkier than the fz100's lens then? But how do you calculate the effective zoom on any camera if you know focal length and sensor size? I didn't bother to yet to find this info... I did feel that pentax k-x was the camera that was most likely closer to how I am... still I am likely going to buy none due to many limitations all cameras have....thx
@Lion040882 I think I am going to buy this camera too & I am also an amateur! The video quality looks AMAZING & so do they pictures! VERY detailed! It is also a good price!
I have no idea if you know this but you need to select "Intelligent Auto" from the mode dial before start shooting the movie. If you already did, excuse my intrusion.
If your looking for a camera that is more towards the video end and still affordable the sony cx110 will out perform this camera. It is better for motion shots and does not create ugly lens flares. The lens flares on the sony look great.
Also these still cameras are not good for motion, motion seems to be jittery on all of them. Very sharp detailed video however, these cameras are great to put on a tripod for still movie shots and thats the main thing I recommend them for. Be careful at all times to not overexpose on these cameras, don't have the fstop too low all the time.2.8 is good at night maybe 4.0 in the day.
If you shoot this camera at any bright lights or the sun, it creates long thin blue lines on the footage, this is something that can not be fixed. If you have trouble editing your avchd footage from this camera you need a computer with an intel processor and avchd supporting software. If you want the best out of the video in low light make the fstop as low as possible, I think this camera goes to a 2.8. Don't ever use the lens hood with this camera, you will notice you can see it when zoomed out.
There is a problem when filming a video ( that I never had with a camcorder). It is when you shoot with the sun, it creates a purple laser stripe wherever you have the sun or its reflection. How can you resolve this problem? It doesn't work with a polarizer lens, I tried.
For anyone wondering the Lumix is much better than the cannon sx20 for video. for photos the sx20 is nicer. In daytime shooting with good lighting they both shoot great. In inbetween day and night time the sx20 video seems to do better. At night the lumix by far is better. Both have trouble at night shooting a bright subject and create large lines. Built in audio on both is ok but if you want great audio you need a camera that can use an xlr adapter. These cameras are great if your on vacation.
@5ongohan vegas studio 9.0, but the "b" version, not the "c". I had color problems when editing, I had to downgrade from C version to B version and now my videos are 100% perfect.
Very nice video. I was thinking about buying this camera, but, it was a tough decision between the canon powershot SX20 IS. the lumix deffinately focuses faster, but thre was less noise with the canon overall, so I chose it, I figured I wouldnt' be disappointed either way. :)
Less grainy than I thought (night scene). Not bad! Is there a website with all the settings to use in different conditions? Theamount of exposure, shutter speed, etc. for different type of scenes, etc.
Its just using the Manual focusing. All cameras with a decent lens should be able to do it. Auto focus is nice but if you want good video footage manual is key.
nice emotion captured in your vid! the music and the night scene at the beginning x)

I've had my fz35 for almost a year, sick of its grainy pictures even at 200 ISO, buying a DSLR in a few weeks. FZ35 takes wonderful video though.

You cantransform the AVCHD format with X Media Recode. I've coded it in DIVX, than I could import this video in Nero Vision.
