As good a drummer as Portnoy is, he's no John Bonham, and this clearly shows. This solo lacks Bonzo's sound, power, groove, his bass drum effect, etc. I'm not calling either drummer better than the other, I'm just saying that this solo is a poor imitation and nothing like anything Bonzo would've played. If you're going to do a tribute to another drummer's solo, the least you should do is play it like them.
Very poor job at Moby Dick. I can play it better than this guy. You are totally missing the offbeat 5 stroke rolls and double-para-diddles. Maybe taking a few lessons would help you out. Just a bit of constructive criticism :-)
meh, like his other stuff this is why you can't have too much discipline and technique on covering bonzo..i guess it's not apparent to him.but still better than most of these cover bands on here..I always thought Billy Squier's drummer in the 80s was a real mirror image of Bonzo's sound and FEEL...
@1977carlitosway You clearly hven`t seen the Mike Portnoy In Constant Motion DVD.... I says that in this clip you will not see anny Mike Portnoy stuff and that he is doing a tribute. (and yhis whole concert was a TRIBUTE ;)
@mrturdferguson11 Wow, I feel sorry for you, then, you fucking inbred mentally challenged dimwit fuckwad of a human being.
Y'know, while we're being fucking immature and calling eachother 5-year old names. "Dipshit"? Seriously? Is that the best a fucking moron like you can come up with?
This suffers from the same issue he had with the Pert kit. He has the drums tuned too low. Also..listen to the noise gates..clipping off the floor toms....Bonham's drums were much higher in pitch and much cleaner...most of that of course..is Bonham himself. But that low floppy sound..isn't close to Bonham.
Just seen this band In Strousburg there were awful, Singer couldn't hit a note worst band i ever seen in all my days, seen better bands in my high school days, no jojke save your money these guys suck. Go see GTLO there in tune and a good show
@isgrinch1 as a big fan of bonham and specially Portnoy i have to say that mike explained in his Dvd from where this video came, that he was not trying to COPY the solo..... he tried to emulate the Bonham style, obviously with differences......anyone can play the solo from this song !!!! the same happened in te other Portnoy tibute bands, he tried to emulate Ringo, Peart and Moon......
or tell me, in this solo, don't you hear any of the bonham style? i hear a lot of Bonzo here...
@isgrinch1 Just goes to show you can have all the chops and technical ability in the world but nothing beats feel.
Drums sound too modern for Bonham too. That's usually the dumb sound engineers fault though. They always want everything polished instead of hearing what a drum truly sounds like.

Well Mike is good but he is a lightweight compared to Bonham who was a heavy weight when I saw him in 1970!

Mike Portnoy is great. John Bonham was a master. Mike is a great technical drummer, Bonham was a creative giant!
