Heh.. I remember Renegade had the the same 'glitch' where if you get off the boss quickly after getting on him you could get back down and beat the tar out of him.. then get off him then just punch him once for an easy victory.. Cool to see its roots!!
The first game of the Kunio-kun series was a revolutionary action game for its time, due to being the basis of modern belt-scrolling beat 'em ups like Double Dragon and Final Fight. Retitled 'Renegade' outside of Japan, it was a massive worldwide hit.
The game was ported onto the Famicom in 1987, and followed by a handheld spin-off for the Game Boy subtitled 'Bangai Rantō Hen' (1990). The original arcade resurfaced in 2006 courtesy of the PS2 Oretachi Gasen Zoku series.
Due to containing Japanese cultural content, Taito modified it to make it resemble the 1979 film "The Warriors" and renamed it "Renegade" for overseas release. Like Sunsoft's mascot Hebe from the Hebereke series, Technos Japan's mascot Kunio had his look and name changed, but more than once unlike Hebe.
I guess it's amusing that black guys don't exist in Japan.. (more or less) ;-P
