the sad thing is that the end customer who buys these phones with there hardly earned money not get satisfied when u look around the competitors!!!!
i've been using nokia phones since the very beginning and it seems that the latter releases "beta" products and upgrades it relative to what is on the market....
The E71 homescreen is HORRIBLE. We also want the widgets to LOOK NICE. Why do the standard Nokia icons look like they were designed by amateurs? It makes no sense.
You realize that is part of the reason WHY the E71 (S60 3.1) is THE fastest device running that system EVEN with heavy application load. You can also choose different Themes you know; and link applications to show data on the home screen Active Stanby. You're just not utilizing the power of it. E72-2 just got FCC approval E71 upgrade. sweet.
It's great that Nokia finally discovered how important a customizable homescreen is.
I personally use my homescreen quite a lot and I am very unsatisfied with the current situation. I am one of those 5800 users who are waiting for a firmware update to extend the homescreen functionality.
The Nokia guys already did a great job with the 5800. I hope that they don't forget that a lot of use bought this phone in a very early state and were kind of beta testers for the new S60 5th platform.
Of course the v21 firmware is pretty mature by now, but there still are some important things to implement:
- customizable (and rotating) homescreen (like shown in the video)
- kinetic scrolling
- maybe Skype support in Q3/09 (please please please!!!)
This is my first Nokia phone and I do not have any experience on how serious Nokia cares about the users' needs. I hope they'll do something so I we can stick with this brand.
BTW: There is one phone by a different manufacturer (A**le) which gets new features by OS updates (v3.0 ATM) very often. I wish Nokia would do the same - I would even pay 5$ for the features I mentioned!
Yeah its really STUPID of Nokia to NOT have enabled this on the N97 in the first place because THEY HAD the feedback data THEN when designing it!!!! Now 5800 should get a more powerful & interactive homescreen layout like the 5630XM.
WE WANT THE C6s,N97s HOMSCREEN IN OUR NOKIA 5530 , 5800, X6 and 5230
OR SYMBIAN^2

I hope Nokia will be improving the homescreen on the Nokia 5800. It's a great phone with a few problems, one of them being the crappy homescreen :)

I am open to suggestion on themes. Link them here.
I HAVE downloaded one theme with icons - soft black by PI Zero - which is pretty good but not perfect.
But there really isn't any excuse for the ugly icons that ship with the device. Or the ugly fonts. Or the ugly windows.
Ugliness does not make the device run faster. It just makes it harder to look at and me to want to dump my E71.

I would request the same home screen for my 5800(the best selling Nokia touch screen ever), even though I admit I paid lesser than the N97.
Hope Nokia brings a new home screen in the next firmware update for the 5800.

so where's the homescreen for the 5800?
or are only people who got the overpriced model spending 85% of their time on the homescreen?
