As timeless as Star Wars has proven to be, if you weren't there, in the theaters, in 1977 -- you didn't experience the film. Period. Nothing up until that time even came close when it came to special effects in movies. Plus, films in the 1970s were dark and brooding. Star Wars not only rescued its genre, it rescued its industry.

@MMAALL Nothing? I, for one, think the special effects of 2001: A Space Odyssey even put today's effects to shame, and it came out in 1968. When you speak of a genre, I hope you don't mean sci-fi, since I so often have to remind people that Star Wars is a space opera, not a hard science fiction film. Countless pieces of work stray the line between sci-fi and space opera, but Star Wars leans more towards space opera. I love Star Wars and all, but let's get our genres right.

@MMAALL While I see your point, I have to disagree. Though, since I was born only 16 years ago, I'll never have the experience that people who saw it in theaters did thirty five years ago. However, I have the complete blu-ray saga on DVD, and when I dim the lights, grab a blanket and turn the volume to full, that's an experience that's timeless. My generation can't experience Star Wars in the same way yours can, but we're the ones who'll be carrying on it's legacy. And we enjoy it all the same.

I really think that comparing Star Wars and Star Trek is a fallacious maneuver. They are both different in the sense that Star Trek lays a dissemination about the issues that any living society would face, and Star Wars is all about the inner struggles and will that drives us all. They are both on the same team as far as I am concerned, in terms of causing us to THINK about our perceptions. Take from them what you will, or just enjoy the entertainment.
