Well, you also have to account for the fact that your friends can be a minority group; they may be your friends because they are smart and informed, or _vice versa_. I can't speak for NYC, but my experience is that most people could not answer these questions, just as RT has pointed out. Point: There are many Americans (like me) who know world geography, geopolitics, history, and current events, but RT did not interview me! However, there is a huge, productive, & relatively prosperous middle class that lives very well by the standards of any nation. Go deep into the US heartland, far from big cities: The roads are paved, the electric service is nearly universal & is reliable. Phones work, the stores are full of food, there is no waiting to get gasoline or diesel. Police are quite courteous, & corruption among officials is rare.

Well, you also have to account for the fact that your friends can be a minority group; they may be your friends because they are smart and informed, or _vice versa_. I can't speak for NYC, but my experience is that most people could not answer these questions, just as RT has pointed out.
