It was bound to happen. The White House gave in on the Bush defense shield, now Russia smells weakness and will continue to push . . . and probably get what it wants. If I were making the decision I would first criticize Russia in the halls of the EU and the UN for actually suggesting it wants to make more earth-destroying nukes, and then tell the Great Bear that we will put the Czech-Polish shield back on the table if it goes forward with such plans.

in 5 years Russia will retire all SS-18 and SS-20 - the backbone of our nuclear shield. The new (less powerful) missiles are required to replace the old ones that we're unable to continue producing because the factory that used to build them is now abroad. And actually let me ask you a question. Why the US keeps expanding its military presence while Russia withdrew from all bases in Cuba, Eastern Europe and even Vietnam? Stop blaming us for "continuing to push". We're simply trying to fight back

I would like to believe you, but are you sure of all your facts? Certainly Russia can develop or has developed technologies necessary to maintain existing nukes. Also, the whole idea is to reduce stockpiles, not replace. Russia should join US in creating an undefeatable and triply redundant missile shield and then destroy all our nukes. Rus and US are destined to be united against tyranny. As for US expansion, you will see us leave Iraq and Afghan. in 10 years or less.

If the US was "continuing to push" against Russia, we would not be in Iraq or Afghanistan.
We would have massed our tank divisions in Poland and the Baltic States and adopted a menacing posture of training to breach the Russian equivalent of the Fulda Gap as the Soviets did throughout the Cold War to intimidate the West.
