Interesting. When I've seen Japanese art depicting the koto, it's invariably a woman playing it. Is it mostly women who play the koto in Japan? I teach kids and sometimes I dial my ipod to soft, quiet koto music to create a peaceful environment in the class while they are testing or writing something extensive.

They like it too and are less likely to act up when it's playing ;)

BTW, the steel guitar is also prominent in much of the quiet surf music. Have you ever played a steel guitar?
