I've always preferred Luke's singing to Ronnie's, not to say that Ronnie is not brilliant and an excellent singer. Luke's version seemed to go by a bit better, Ronnie's voice is a bit too rough to really hit the song perfectly. But a great singer singing a great song with (really) grate accompaniment. Whistles in particular.
As Ronnie said, "Luke did sing the song (Raglan Road), and I believe his is the definitive version. But, it's such a good song that I'm going to sing it anyway."
At his best or at his worst, Ronnie's my hero. After all, that's what makes him so inspiring. Through his bad times, he just kept going. So, I guess that's my two scents to the people who continually make jibes about his version of Kavanagh's tragic love ballad.
Join me on my crusade to stop this tyrant trading a once owned irish product in Ireland, thats now sold out to the british and it's economy while the irish workers who made it famous Q on the dole. Jacobs biscuits was once a profit making company that employed hundreds of Irish folk, that is until an Irish man got greedy and shut it down sorce-ing the work out to foreign land.
Sorry, people are going to lynch me for this, Ronnie is a hero of mine but from a musical perspective this seems ploddy. I really think Raglan Road needs to flow better. I mean the beauty is realised in the flowing nature of the air combined with the magic of the words , and Ronnie just seems to punctuate it too much. Still emotional, no doubt, and the accompaniment is beautiful, especially the whistle but Luke seemed to be able to do emotion with depth and a more gentle flow.
@STColeridge22 the pacing is a little slower than luke's classic version, yes, but I think there's such character in ronnie's voice, especially at this late stage of his life, and it communicates the heartbreak that is the real message of the song so effectively.
And never a voice like Like Kelly. What a beautiful duo of voices. Never will be matched. Each one can invoke tears (especially) after a few brew. Simply the best.
Luke Kelly & Ronnie Drew, rest in peace.

There will never be another voice like Mr. Ronnie Drew. There are few songs that tear me up, but this is one of them.
