those are the clothes he came with frm krypton so they have the same properties as him, affected by the yellow sun as he is. this and the first scene from the movie where he stops the plane are my fav scenes in all superman movies

@milten09 technically (anal) the creators said (belated) that he had a 1-2 mm field around him that protected his suit as it was so tight fitting. so in the comics you only saw his cloak getting shredded unless he was getting severely damaged and wasn't able to get enough of the "yellow suns" rays to keep his suit complete you also saw the suit getting ripped etc

@milten09 At Six Flags Superman ride in Illinois, they have different "facts" about Superman that you can read while waiting for the ride. It says that he has a "shield" of some type that surrounds him. That might explain how he was able to taylor the suit, although it probably wouldn't account for the cape.
