wasn't a mechanical failure. yes, the bomb rack came off with the bomb still attached - that's what was being tested, a parent rack release. this incident caused this particular ejection rack to be reengineered.
at 29 seconds you can see that the bomb still has the retaining mechanisim designed to hold it onto the aircraft, this causes drag to pull it upwards. Clearly a mechanical failure.

@heirihunziker well, they're trained to eject as soon as they absolutley know there's no hope of taking back control of the plane. but they had no idea what went wrong, one minute everything is fine and the next half of the wing is gone and you're spinning rapidly toward the water. so they probably need a little time to judge that the there was no chance of recovery before getting out of there. that, or because of g- forces, they probably couldn't reach the ejection button right away.

i was an ordy for vfa 113 and i can tell you it wasnt the pylon that came off it was a "ver" rack it allows the aircraft to carry more than one bomb per station it looks like a boogie board thats why it flew like it did,when the pilot pickled off the weapon he chose the bru32 bombrack, and not the bru 33 station which let everything drop also the bomb a bdu82 500 pound bomb had a snake eye fin you CANNOT JETISON A WING PYLON
The commentator is blind, stupid or both, you can see that the pylon failed. The pylon came off the wing instead of the bomb coming off the pylon, the drag of the pylon still attached to the bomb pulls it into the skyhawk.
the skyhawk pilot didnt eject because the plane was spinning. its VERY dangerous to eject without knowing your bearings. notice both pilots tried to eject after the plane had entered a flat spin.

That bomb flew sideways because the ejector rack detached with the bomb. The bomb is now an unpredictable glider that can fly in any direction including up. You can blame the ejector explosive bolts being properly set or the anti sway pins being too loose. So the bomb does not separate properly ripping the ejector rack away from the jet. No I do not work in the Air Force or work with Ordinance. I am just a military aircraft junky.

When the tow planes fly together they make a turbulance and makes a vacume when the pilot underneath fires the bomb causes the bomb to fly up and hit the plane :D
Get your eyes tested maverick- thats just the tip of the skyhawk's wing. The angle and light shinning off of the hornet blurs the the tail fin of the hornet, but it didnt fall off.
One more thing..., if you look closely between 0:46-0:47, the F-18 Hornet looses the right fin! HOW? Was it from the explosion of the Skyhawk, something?, or maybe, parts of the pilon or rack from where the bomb was released (with it, as it could be seen in the video at 0:29), as they say there was turbulence. Try to find out how the right vertical fin of the Hornet disappears...!

Damn lucky pilots! Ive seen clips where pilots eject upside down whilst the plane is rolling and then BAM! they are ejected in to the ground/water a second or 2 before the plane crashes.
this is not either pilots fault. if anyone is at fault it is the designers of the peice of ordinace being dropped. ive seen hundreds of bomb releases and iv'e never seen one fly up and back like that. either the bomb is too light, or it's fins gve it too much lift. I have seen another video that is nearly identical to this one in which a fuel tank drop takes out the chase plane. strangely it's also an f-18 and an A-4.

When the tow planes fly together they make a turbulance and makes a vacume when the pilot underneath fires the bomb causes the bomb to fly up and hit the plane :D

1st the f18 pilot should have pulled up after he released, or the bomb will stay with the plan. and the other pilot should have further away...
2nd the bru33 bomb rack (not the pylon)came off when he released which should not have happened, it could have be a number of things that went wrong.

Get your eyes tested maverick- thats just the tip of the skyhawk's wing. The angle and light shinning off of the hornet blurs the the tail fin of the hornet, but it didnt fall off.

One more thing..., if you look closely between 0:46-0:47, the F-18 Hornet looses the right fin! HOW? Was it from the explosion of the Skyhawk, something?, or maybe, parts of the pilon or rack from where the bomb was released (with it, as it could be seen in the video at 0:29), as they say there was turbulence. Try to find out how the right vertical fin of the Hornet disappears...!

The bomb was inert and it was still attached to the couple rack. Since it didn't came off the rack, it never would have armed.

Looks like the pylon came off with the bomb causing it to tumble, normally bombs can glide rather well

Damn lucky pilots! Ive seen clips where pilots eject upside down whilst the plane is rolling and then BAM! they are ejected in to the ground/water a second or 2 before the plane crashes.

this is not either pilots fault. if anyone is at fault it is the designers of the peice of ordinace being dropped. ive seen hundreds of bomb releases and iv'e never seen one fly up and back like that. either the bomb is too light, or it's fins gve it too much lift. I have seen another video that is nearly identical to this one in which a fuel tank drop takes out the chase plane. strangely it's also an f-18 and an A-4.
