  • @09108132819 it's a fairly low level program, so what operating system are you using? Also, when you download WinMPQ, I recommend you run the program at least once before using MPQ Compactor, so download WinMPQ and then run it, then try using the MPQ Compactor, it should work then. (I think the MPQCompactor has some dependencies on WinMPQ). If that doesn't work just pm me, I'll find a solution for you.

  • @jakeneko You don't. With winrar...you extract the file(s) from the rar archive, and use the extracted file(s). All Winrar is, is a compression/archiving program. For information on how to create an MPQ file, watch the video.

  • @galiant609 Dude, do you look at the time the video was posted? (March 4th 2008). Besides that, DatEdit is for noobs. If you can't create MPQ's via WinMPQ and require DatEdit to link them for you, then...DatEdit is probably as far as you'd ever get =P but yeah, video is 2 years old.

  • Can somebody please help me with winmpq?

    every time i try and run it theres a problem with the mscomctl.ocx file. It says i dont have it, etc, but even after I downloaded it and placed it in the right spot winmpq still wont work.

    Do any of you know how to use mpqedit or PyMPQ who could help or lemme know whats with the winmpq?

  • @ZMT77 go to ShadowFlare's website and make sure you've downloaded all the necessary runetime files associated with the WinMPQ program. Do you have Starcraft on a disc or as a downloaded file? If you have it as a downloaded file make sure you have all the MPQ's...for example I have Stardat.mpq, Broodat.mpq and patch_rt.mpq. it could just be starcrafts' mpq's are corrupt or something. If you have it on a disc, don't go searching for any of those MPQ's. What OS do you have?

  • @Tarandarklord hi, i have all the runtime files from microsoft and i use windows 7. i installed SC+BW with the new discs blizzard put out, so i can just run it off of my hardrive. ive tried making mods by using other mpq programs, but when i run the new product it doesnt make any changes in SC so im not 100% sure whats going on. its prolly my comp though.

  • Well, WinMPQ can load any custom MPQ and extract anything from the MPQ Archive...I"ve always used MPQDraft to draft the MPQ into an executable though. Have you already tried to use MPQDraft?

  • Well you can replace Starcrafts' sprites with your own sprites via a program known as RetroGRP. You first open RetroGRP, open a GRP file (to get GRP files out of Starcraft use WinMPQ and extract them) and then have RetroGRP extract the BMPs into folders. Modify those sprites using the appropriate palette that RetroGRP comes with, and then use RetroGRP to compile that folder back into a GRP, then use WinMPQ to import them into your mod.

  • You'll have to render that avi file into a bmp image, and of course, you definitely have to use RetroGRPs appropriate palettes (which should be able to be loaded into whichever image editing program you may be using). If you don't use the palette and decide to use your own palette for colour, then I doubt Starcraft will even be able to read it or recognize it...use RetroGRP to extract BMP images from the Zergling grp file, and then use the right palette to edit the zergling.

  • sorry you'll have to be a little more specific than that. You used dateditII to change the capacity of the dropship...when you were playing the game did you remember to research the ability for an overlord to carry units? Load the units into the overlord, if the capacity is as you set it, you may have to go to FireGraft and make necessary changes there...I intend on releasing a how-to video for firegraft within the next couple of weeks.

  • @aczchef so you gave drones, the miners/builders, the ability to capacitate units but...they probably just won't unload because you improperly used one of your programs. Send me a message explaining what you did and I'll try to tell you what happened k?

  • tthere should be a "spells" category either in Arsenal III, or DatEdit. You can change damages there-to change the functionality you'll have to use MPQGraft or FireGraft and change the techtree a bit.

  • I assume you mean Cannot Create File C:\Documents and Settings\Username\etc.etc but that's just an error, you probably screwed up somewhere, or you're using an obselete version of one of the programs. Try using WinMPQ, and creating the MPQ file with that instead. MPQCompactor has known bugs.

  • go to Shadowflare's site and download the Visual Basic Runtime. It should be under the WinMPQ section. Download and then install it.

  • CHANGING the attack animations involves editing the AI Script. New attack animations? You could modify the old attack animations via RetroGRP, extracting the Grps from the MPQ, and then making necessary changes there using the appropriate Brushes. I can give a more detailed explanation if you need one.

  • Yes, use FireGraft to change some of the button functions and add a few more for other units too. Firegraft is pretty straight forward, just don't change any of those OpCodes or anything because you need to know some basic assembly.

  • I dont really get your question....make two hydralisks come out of a Zerg Egg instead of one? I think making them a new type of unit, is easy as using Firegraft to change the tech tree for it....srry I really dont get your question =/ =S

  • I think there's newer versions of firegraft. I know there's a way to depatch SC to version 1.0, then update to the version you want (alot like PSP firmware modding) Try looking for a newer version of Firegraft, if you can't find one, just depatch.

  • I followed all the instructions, and I created the mod application thing. However, when I run starcraft through the mod application it isn't modded at all. To test it I gave drones some random attack like the archon's psionic shockwave. When I start the game by clicking on the mod's icon, my drones are still normal drones.

  • unit.dat is what some of the updated versions of programs use rather than units.dat. You can also try for weapons weapondat.dat and for tech techdat.dat .  If that doesn't work, I'm sure there's just something wrong with the program OR you didn't use it properly. There's another way on doing this too just look at my little site.

  • start WINMPQ, go to file>open... then find an MPQ file (The orginal game MPQ is in the folder C:\Program Files\Starcraft) find the mpq file, open it up, you'll get a list of something called "~unknown"'s which you'll need to download something called the Starcraft Listfile to read properly, the link to that file is on my freewebs account somewhere, once you have that file go to options>listfiles... then open up the list file. Now, select what you want to extract, then left click, hit extract.

  • thank you! And yes, I'll agree with the whole "hard to read" issue, at the time I only had movie maker, and...not alot of options for text colour lol. If you need any help with the modding process, just ask, I'll ssee what I could do to help.

  • Yes it is possible, do you know how to use the staredit? (Original SC map editor), if not, there's another wicked awesome map editing tool known as "StarForge" I normally use this one; it's basically the same; though allowing square tiles instead of diamond, but has a more...C++ oriented trigger window. It's very, VERY easy once you get the hang of it though.

  • well, you could always have neutral teams and for the triggers; one of them could be "Always" then "Give all units owned by player (yellow or whatever) " that's what i do.

  • some people find that datedit is harder to use. Though simplified in some cases, there are extra options that people may not understand. That's why they call it a "BEGINNER VIDEO".

  • for the name you need TBLpad and for the sounds datedit (units,sounds)

  • yeah to change the sounds and the names of units, you do require TBL pad. I have a tutorial on how to use TBL pad in a basic sense on my Freewebs account.

  • use TBLpad, it works for changing unit sounds, and names. There's also MPQGraft and FireGraft for editing the tech trees. (params and such). There's a way to change the sounds thru the MPQ archive as well when you extract them, just change the names of whatever WAV file you want to replace it with to the name of the file. like you want "Kill.wav" to be replaced with "die.wav" rename "die.wav" to "Kill.wav" and import it into the MPQ.

  • Simple, try downloading the files again, it's an eternal programming error in the MPQ Compactor. Just re-download the stuff. (that happened to me too...different errors though).

  • Just a question. Is it possible that I don't need to create a mod, and just edit the Star Craft I already have? Like what they did for Xtra Editor, where you have special heroes and units (e.g. Razagal or the Vespene Gas Tank)

  • @XAlphaZEROX Um, yes you can do that, just edit the Stardat.mpq file instead of creating your own.

  • No it basically makes an EXE that is playable if you have the game in the E: drive. (disc drive) and you double click the newly created mod application (the thing that looks like a gear) to play it. If you wish to play the original game you simply double click the original application. (Just be sure not to modify the official MPQ's or it will stay like that.)

  • I had the same problem. Is your mpq contractor file in a compressed folder? Because if it is just move the scroll like icon somewhere else, like my documents or something.

  • Ok, you did save the units.dat file inside of a folder named arr, right? (the arr folder must be inside the folder you wanna turn into a mod) Maybe you just got a slight mishap, since it says that, it must mean that the game crashed. Hm...I suggest scanning your computer. Maybe you forgot about the arr folder inside your modding folder? Beats me. That's wierd though, if you've followed all the instructions in the tutorial exactly as layed out, there shouldn't ba a problem, cuz mine didn't crash.
