For in this country the constitution requires that that position be filled only by northern European Protestants. No Blacks, no Jews and, indeed, no Irish need apply. What an ignorant, bitter and abusive comment. The Queen has given her life to the role she fulfills. It is a job to which she has brought great integrity and dignity. At over 80 years old she continues to represent our country with the utmmost dedication and devotion. She works hard, fulfilling hundreds of engagements at home and abroad each year. And on the issue of money, every country in the world pays for its head of state, be it a monarch or president, so why would we be any different?

Are you being paid to promote this royal propoganda? The problem is in this country we cant have a proper debate about the royals because most of the media are biased, well the BBC, SKY and ITV and the right wing press. Much of the true facts are hidden. I guess they have to be shown to be doing something.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Not critical enough. 2 papers aren't biased, namely the Guardian and Independent. When there is anything on the radio and tv about the royals do you hear the republican view? nit good in a democracy.
the media report the popular view of the people republicans are a minority and so dont get as much coverage as a majority, it was reported in the telegraph that at the jubliy celebrations the rpublicans staged a demonstration outside buk palace all 13 of them
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
In a democracy, has the right to representation... My whole point is that 20-25% of the people don't have any, in fact ethnic minorities get much more. Now 20-25% is sizeable considering we dont get any time on the TV to debate the monarchy because of the biased media. If ethnic minorities had the same treatment there would be an outcry. Dont forget there a number of repulicans in the commons, but alas they tow the party line.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
In fact this helps my point. If there was fair reporting on this. The media told everyone for weeks about the jubilee celebrations, but they never mentioned that there is a alternative view or that there would be an anti-monarchist gathering. I'm afraid this proves my point! Hardly promoting free speech and free expression. If the shoe was on the other foot, there would be uproar.
in the news world of papers the majority view is expresed, they pander to their readers views, the press has never been about free speech just selling more copies.
You're quite entitled to your point of view but why you have to express it in such an offensive way is a puzzle. Your comments reveal far more of the kind of person you are than ever they say about the Queen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Such a waste of money. 37 million pounds spent a year on the UK's Queen. Starving children and diseased people in Africa need help and instead, a handful of people wear tiaras and crowns and live in an ornate palace in extreme wealth. What a shame.
That's not at all true, the Crown Estate subsidises the work of the Royal Family and actually returns a profit for the Treasury!!
Her Majesty' Government in turn provides 9.8 million pounds per year to pay the wages of all the staff, estate costs etc. So in fact after the Queen has paid her taxes HM treasury makes a prfit from the Royal family!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Rubbish... The crown estates should be given back to the nation, they were stolen by the royals in the first place... Queenie was forced to start paying taxes because the nation was getting restless, and they dont pay the correct rates. Chalrie makes millions from the Duchy, again given to (stolen from) the nation. They should all get real jobs for real wages like everyone else.
if the queen did not exist there would still be people starving in afric the monarchy does a lot of chrity work and the queen pays her way and costs the nation nothing
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To rulebritannia1: It doesn't set a very good example, given all of the poverty and people in this world who are dying of starvation. The way The Queen displays her wealth. It is tacky and very inappropriate. And personally, I take offense to the lavish lifestyles these free loaders live. She is no better than I am nor has God commanded her to divinely rule. Does one family actually need their own train, helicopters, planes, and a castle in Scotland? This is ludicrous.
well seeing as they pay for they can do what they want they give lots to charities and support to the devolping nations its not the rich of the west that are to blame it is the leaders of the poor that are one of the worst bunch of people, their are pleanty of rich people with planes private islands the fact that ours serve a real purpose shows they are very different
You're such an arrogant idiot, you have absolutely no appreciatio for the work done by the Sovereign. HM guides our democratically elected Governments through the most testing times.
Remember this: "The Power of Monarchy lies not in the power it gives the Queen, but in the power it prevents others having" (i.e. it prevents people like Hitler, Mugabe etc coming into power and forcing dictatorships on the people). The Queen is the supreme 'regulator' if you like. And she does a mighty fine job.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Oh I'm arrogant, that's rich!! You have the arrogance to assume that I don't have the right to my views. Power statement is rubbish, i think you need to go and read about the royal prerogative, gives the prime minister of the day the right to send troops to war without consulting parliament, not even the US president has such a power. Hitler argument is childish, are you saying the US or france have problems? The US is much more democratic than we are.
I firmly believe you have the right to your opinions, I'm simply saying I think you're wrong and backing that up with evidence. I never suggested that all presidents are dictators int he making (by the way, France has a slightly different system with a PM and President - though as in Russia the balance of power is shifting...)
The Royal Preorgative affords the Soverign a vast raft of 'reserve' powers - in fact it's only by convention that the Queen's powers are limited. Think Australia 1975..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That's all i ask a PM and ELECTED President. The only differnce i really ask for is an elected head of state, nothing stopping the royals running, but they only get five uears like everyone else. Oh and we need to further reform the house of lords, that place is so open to misuse!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How can it be fine the way it was? none of them were elected. They were oppointed by favour form the goverment in power. Even bishops are in there. You say you stnd for democracy and free speech? very hard to believe. Heriditory piers are there through birth not merit. How can you justify this in a supposed democracy? We are meant to be a meritocracy.
the way it used to be was that people though in there because of their birth actuly had a brain in their head and were masters in certain feilds of knoledge and had no political bias, now we have a house of lords filled with people who are just the cronies of either the labour party or the conservatives, you have people in there now because of how much they give to the labour party or because they big companies, that is the biggest crime, you dont have to elect eveyone for it to be a good system
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That is such a tired argument, sounds like you would like a return to the days before democracy. Allowing people power through birth is called totalitarianism. All other successful democracies ahve an elected 2nd house, its us that are stuck in the stone ages. Stop the favouritism and rewards for party donations. This is the trouble with our outdated class oriontated system.
I think a herediatary head of state is more cost efficient and effective than an elected one. It provides untiy and continuity which a president cannot give. Would people flock to Buckingham Palace in times of crises if it were a presidential house? I think not.
regarding the Upper House: in my opinion an entirely appointed house , with appointments for life made by the Monarch and an independent Royal Commission and I'd remove all political parties to make all Lords entirely independent.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Your arguments just dont work i'm afraid, it is morally wrong to have people in positions of influence and power through birth in a so called democracy!
Well you have your opinion on the matter, I have mine. I really see no problem in having people born into power and yes I believe in deference to the Crown. I think we should probably leave it at that.
I'm sure you're a reasonable sort of chap - so I hope that we can agree to disagree.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If you have no problem with people being born into power, then i'm assuming you're happy with unelected forms of government. Very dangerous statement!!!

This is true, thats why i tend to read the independent if any. Papers just express their own opinions, and they dont inform, which is a great shame
Boccherini64 3 years ago
You're quite entitled to your point of view but why you have to express it in such an offensive way is a puzzle. Your comments reveal far more of the kind of person you are than ever they say about the Queen.

Such a waste of money. 37 million pounds spent a year on the UK's Queen. Starving children and diseased people in Africa need help and instead, a handful of people wear tiaras and crowns and live in an ornate palace in extreme wealth. What a shame.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
That's not at all true, the Crown Estate subsidises the work of the Royal Family and actually returns a profit for the Treasury!!
Her Majesty' Government in turn provides 9.8 million pounds per year to pay the wages of all the staff, estate costs etc. So in fact after the Queen has paid her taxes HM treasury makes a prfit from the Royal family!

Boccherini64 3 years ago
if the queen did not exist there would still be people starving in afric the monarchy does a lot of chrity work and the queen pays her way and costs the nation nothing

YogaNate79 3 years ago
well seeing as they pay for they can do what they want they give lots to charities and support to the devolping nations its not the rich of the west that are to blame it is the leaders of the poor that are one of the worst bunch of people, their are pleanty of rich people with planes private islands the fact that ours serve a real purpose shows they are very different

Boccherini64 3 years ago
I firmly believe you have the right to your opinions, I'm simply saying I think you're wrong and backing that up with evidence. I never suggested that all presidents are dictators int he making (by the way, France has a slightly different system with a PM and President - though as in Russia the balance of power is shifting...)
The Royal Preorgative affords the Soverign a vast raft of 'reserve' powers - in fact it's only by convention that the Queen's powers are limited. Think Australia 1975..

That's all i ask a PM and ELECTED President. The only differnce i really ask for is an elected head of state, nothing stopping the royals running, but they only get five uears like everyone else. Oh and we need to further reform the house of lords, that place is so open to misuse!
Boccherini64 3 years ago
the house of lords was fine the way it was, now it has become a real mess, it should be part appointed part elected and mainly herreditory.

Boccherini64 3 years ago
the way it used to be was that people though in there because of their birth actuly had a brain in their head and were masters in certain feilds of knoledge and had no political bias, now we have a house of lords filled with people who are just the cronies of either the labour party or the conservatives, you have people in there now because of how much they give to the labour party or because they big companies, that is the biggest crime, you dont have to elect eveyone for it to be a good system

Boccherini64 3 years ago
I think a herediatary head of state is more cost efficient and effective than an elected one. It provides untiy and continuity which a president cannot give. Would people flock to Buckingham Palace in times of crises if it were a presidential house? I think not.
regarding the Upper House: in my opinion an entirely appointed house , with appointments for life made by the Monarch and an independent Royal Commission and I'd remove all political parties to make all Lords entirely independent.

Your arguments just dont work i'm afraid, it is morally wrong to have people in positions of influence and power through birth in a so called democracy!
Boccherini64 3 years ago
Well you have your opinion on the matter, I have mine. I really see no problem in having people born into power and yes I believe in deference to the Crown. I think we should probably leave it at that.
I'm sure you're a reasonable sort of chap - so I hope that we can agree to disagree.

If you have no problem with people being born into power, then i'm assuming you're happy with unelected forms of government. Very dangerous statement!!!

i completely agree with you, monarchy is the definitive symbol of unity and continuity

Oh yes it is ore democratic! i'm not saying it's all good. Look at local officials, every city and town has an elected more, all public servants are elected including, DA's, sherrifs and police chiefs even the guy responsibly for collecting rubbish (sorry, trash). Why do you think the death penalty is still used? rememebr if we put it to public vote, we would have it here, wrongly i may add. As they say, their congressmen want go against the "will of the people".

Thanks Rupert for posting this on the very day that my wife received her MBE from Her Majesty, The Queen.
Thanks go to all the staff at Buckingham Palace who are the most helpful and professional people I have ever met in any "walk of life".
The funniest moment of the day, for me, was when I was asked to take a family photograph of the Beckwith family by Tamara herself!
I did not have a clue who she was!!!
Graeme.

Hi Graeme - Your welcome. You could tell by the emotion in the gentleman's voice at the end, that it meant a very lot to him to get his MBE, as I'm sure it did to your wife.
