I knew nothing Opeth until 4 months ago when my 16 year old took me to Houston to see them ... I'm still lifting my jaw from the floor ...
Extremely powerful and the mix of Emerson Lake and Palmer-like voice with the epic musical dramas of ... dare I saw it ... YES and TULL and FLOYD and the current-era-METAL power of ... of ... of Opeth ... it's scary good ....
so youre telling me watershed is better than blackwater park and still life and ghost reveries ???????? fredrik good but nowhere near as good as peter
opeth needs peter back on guitar bad thats why heritage came out the way it did because they couldn't come up with cool riffs and leads without peter.
@KingGiles75 The riffs on watershed, with Fredrik are far cooler than anything peter ever came up with. Heritage is terrible because of Mikaels decision to just masturbate musically all over the place with no direction or respect for their metal following.
totally, Morningrise is their best album. Ghost Reveries might be a close second. Everything else is also awesome. A bit let down by Heritage but if Akerfeldt spent the rest of it his life making autotone pop music I'd still have to find him awesome, he's already given more great music to the world than almost anyone in the last half-century. Plus parts of Heritage (the instrumentals, I feel the Dark, Folklore) are great. I wish their cover of Alice in Chains was less direct though.
@BigBryanG I've only been able to see them three times so far, and I think that they are incredible live. I've seen very few bands that match them live.
Mike's growls were a hell of a lot more scary and harsher than Opeths recent materiel. The older style of Opeth is unique compared to other metal bands. the change from calm lyrics and riffs to the scary stuff is done perfectly and guarantees orgasms to people such as myself :P
@masteropeth The question would be then; what would opeth + weed + food + actual orgasm equal? Actually, I'd also question how you could manage all that at once. Really, come to think of it I'd probably have to follow up by asking how one could arrange something that awesome...so really 3 questions, but regardless.
this is incredible, i hope the new album will have some growls and some clean vocals, i think blackwater park did it the best with a good mix of both.
@stevebob240 I agree but the next album won't have any growls on it. I was kind of disappointed with Watershed because there wasn't the even mixture of metal and soft stuff.
@buck3tface Aw...I love Mikael's growling; it adds this layer of raw emotion, especially when coupled with his melodic passages. Opeth is seriously probably the only death metal band I can listen to because of Mikael's ability use the growling technique in the correct situations...
PS. The beginning parts of The Moor has one of my favourite gutteral lurches and Ghost Reveries has some of the most fitting growls for the lyrical and musical content :P
The thing with opeth is a lot of the time I get sucked in just cause of how cool the fucking title is and then I listen and I'm like god damn this is one of the most awesome, ORIGINAL bands still putting out great records
I like opeth's new and old stuff. But their old stuff just seems to me to have more feeling put into it. more variety, styles, and meaning. I don't know if i'm the only one who feels that way. But opeth none the less is a great band and so far everything I heard is gold. But the older stuff such as this still outshines the newer songs they make today.
@thrashhead94 You should listen to full studio albums, it's an epic trip. In my opinion you should start with Blackwater Park since many people prefer to start with that album (I didn't, I started my Opeth adventure with Ghost Reveries). Just keep in mind, take the time to explore each album, don't rush it because you will miss a lot. Anyway, welcome in the realm called Opeth.
@LifeOfAnOutlaw i started a few years ago, i sat down early in the morning listening to orchid and finished later that night with ghost reveries...what a great fucking day that was!
@LifeOfAnOutlaw The first Opeth song I heard in entirety was Black Rose Immortal, after hearing that song I listened to the album Morningrise. I still think its their best work and a great introduction for new fans
dude they have soo many good songs. ghost of perdition is my personal favorite. and every song from the blackwater park album is brilliant, (bleak is my favorite from that album). you have to listen to all their songs from start to finish to really understand opeth.
the sound and construction of this song is so amazing it makes you feel like your in hell, now your under a weeping moon, and then your at peace, and then back to hell again.
Incredible song i'm so happy i got to see this live quite early on in their career. That end solo has stuck with me for a long long time. Truly amazing.
The near-silence in the middle is worth it just for the part at 8:42. Such a cool riff. And this was their debut album. When i heard this in the early 90's it blew my mind.
I love opeth's first album, and even though it isn't their best in my opinion, it still is one of the greatest debuts of all time. no opeth album is the same as any other.they are all different in their own symbolic way:)
At nights , when alone in the center of night, I can always count on the moon, it reminds me that although I'm distant to many, and often misunderstood, I exist, the moon exists as well, often overshadowed by the sun, I marvel at the moonlight until I disappear into the night.
@jvtherrien I totally know what you mean something about the way most death metal bands these days growl is dull and repetitive but Opeth have interesting riffs and stuff to go with it so yeah :P
Man i love how this song flows from one movement to another i really love and enjoy Opeths music, i think they are probably one of the best metel bands out there Cheers to Opeth!

no need to be sorry - i couldnt give a shit less what u think of me. and if u think i care that's plain pathetic? screaming too brutal?? no i just find it a bit hard to take the song seriously with the screaming.
YEAH, it's pretty ignorant of people to make posts about their opinions that aren't a part of the Opeth song. I say, who the fuck cares who likes what? judgmental fools!
Their music makes me feel so insignificant, yet regal compared to others for the very fact that I can come to appreciate such great music. Honestly, I think they're my favorite band not only in prog metal (or whatever you classify them as (I could care less to be honest)) but altogether! They truly are, in essence, the melodic embodiment of my soul. 5 stars all day every day for Opeth!
CounterCulture you know Opeth has 9 albums and has been around for 20 years, right? If their song organization or length was hurting them as a band, I'm sure they would change it. Personally the song composition and length is why I love Opeth. Plus, this song was off their first album, and they have undoubtedly gotten much better since then
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This band has talent, but I feel they are lacking in either organization of song structure or are too confused on what genre or style they want to be... Plus, they really need to cut down song length. Unless of course they really don't care about fans or real commercial success. They just need to level out and get a more constant sound, theme and, of course, line-up.
And their fans love them for the fact that they make long epic masterpieces. This was the start of it all. Their first album. Every 10min + epic they've released has been embraced by their huge fan base. They have real commercial success, and love their fans. I don't think you know what you are talking about personally
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Epic doesn't HAVE to be long... Hell, even DragonForce isn't as long as them, lol. But if their fans love them that's fine. I didn't say they suck. I do know what I am talking about though because I have talked with fans and read up on them in the past, both saying that long song length, inconsistent line-up's and confusing song styles are their downfall. Dunno, just calling it how I see it man...
??? Opeth does have their own style. And Opeth has MANY fans and they are one of the most respect bands in the metal community. DragoneForce on the other hand... need I say any more?
I don't believe fans are the most important thing. Fans have their own independent thoughts on what the artist or group put out, which is important to themselves. Just like how it's important for the artist/group to think about what they want regardless of outside of opinion, EVEN if that said artist/group gets ridiculed by their fans. And that's more important than the fans.
1st, Opeth has unbeatable construction of songs, and the different parts in their songs are mixed perfectly.
2nd the length of their songs makes them EPIC
3rd they shouldn't care about fans and commercial success because: they already got enough of both + since THEY like their music why should they care?
@P3treos Even though this comment was a year ago I agree with the song structure thing whilst their songs are awesome, some songs lack a certain structure, like the much loved Blackrose immortal there are several points where they just cut out playing and basically start an entirely new song other than that they quite often aren't to bad at it :P.
@CounterCulture87 i don't agree with what you're saying because you obviously want this band to become like every other mainstream metal band. The long song length and complex song structure is what makes this band stand out. the fact that they can effectively make songs that combine many genres easily makes this one of the best bands out there.
I am not saying they should sell out, I am just pointing out things that magazine, fan and online reviews have ALL said they should work on. I actually hate when bands either sell out or go mainstream (Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, etc.). It is just hard to listen to them for any long period of time as opposed to like CoB or In Flames... How are fans or making decent money NOT important by the way? What is the point of making music on a large scale if not for one of those?
you make music to please yourself, not for fans or money. You dont say these people will be my fans, i will write music they like. Selling out is when it becomes about the money
I doubt Opeth will change their song structure or song length, nor should they. Especially not at this point when they're one of the most successful and critically praised bands in their genre. Why would they change a concept that has been working so well for two decades?
You also have to understand that atmosphere and contrasts are very important parts of Opeth's music, that's one reason why their songs follow a certain pattern.
And about their line-up, yes they've had some changes there over the course of the years. Especially Lindgren and Lopez were big losses that could've potentially hurt the band. They always pulled through though and they did it well, that shows that they're in it for the long run and durable enough to last. To me, that's really more a sign of strength than it is a weakness.
@CounterCulture87 I think the two genres blended together perfectly. This band has -if you'll excuse the language- a fuckload of fans, and longer songs mean more Opeth to them-to us. So you can go on thinking what you will, I'm not going to spit out petty insults because everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how INCREDIBLY WRONG they are.
I'd really wanna know how the hell Opeth mastered perfection... This is art.

3rd they shouldn't care about fans and commercial success because: they already got enough of both + since THEY like their music why should they care?
;)

@P3treos actually, deaths voice of perseverence album rivals this in sound structure and epicosity, but i love both <3

@amevilee yes I know what you mean about black rose immortal....but I think these pauses add a bit to the atmosphere

@CounterCulture87 i don't agree with what you're saying because you obviously want this band to become like every other mainstream metal band. The long song length and complex song structure is what makes this band stand out. the fact that they can effectively make songs that combine many genres easily makes this one of the best bands out there.
masterchief3183 2 years ago 3
I am not saying they should sell out, I am just pointing out things that magazine, fan and online reviews have ALL said they should work on. I actually hate when bands either sell out or go mainstream (Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, etc.). It is just hard to listen to them for any long period of time as opposed to like CoB or In Flames... How are fans or making decent money NOT important by the way? What is the point of making music on a large scale if not for one of those?
CounterCulture87 2 years ago
you make music to please yourself, not for fans or money. You dont say these people will be my fans, i will write music they like. Selling out is when it becomes about the money
jacksonthrasher 2 years ago
@CounterCulture87 well most bands make music because they love doing it. that would be the point of making music not for fans or money

Wraithdegothia 2 years ago
And about their line-up, yes they've had some changes there over the course of the years. Especially Lindgren and Lopez were big losses that could've potentially hurt the band. They always pulled through though and they did it well, that shows that they're in it for the long run and durable enough to last. To me, that's really more a sign of strength than it is a weakness.
Wraithdegothia 2 years ago 3
Why must an artist (in this musician) be limited to just one genre or style? Where is the fun in that?
deadpisser88 2 years ago 6
@CounterCulture87 I think you're missing the point of 'progressive'...

@CounterCulture87
If all they cared about was commercial success, they wouldn't be a real band.
