Alabama tests drivers with a computer kiosk purchased through a federal grant. The computer auto-translates the test. To eliminate this system would actually require the state to spend millions of dollars.
Look I came to this country without knowing a single word in English. So, I had to learn like all my other immigrant friends. So, what is the problem with speaking only English. This is rediculous. How is a driver's liscence test being offered in different languages harm the US/goverment/economy/crime rate/etc in ANY WAY? Its the SAME DAMN TEST. Who the hell cares if it is offered in Spanish? Getting an American driver's liscence basically gaurentees you know what each road sign signifies. So here, I think it is important to protect French (even though the current measures are ineffeicient and ineffective) so in that sense, i suppose you could say the same thing about English in alabama. But I feel that French is seriously threatened, especially in Montréal.

I agree with the guy who said that running on populism is smart in this economy, though. Times like these make people circle the wagons. Although you didn't mention the way that laws like this negatively affect international views of Alabama and thus makes it less likely that foreign companies will come there.

Even I, who speaks fluent English, identify the road signs more often by their colors than actually reading what the signs say. Also, the reason for having a driver's test is to show that one can abide by the traffic rules and can drive safely, not to show that one can speak another language--we've got ESL classes for that.
I was actually discussing this with my friends couple of days ago and I'm glad to see someone of the same opinion. I honestly cannot understand why a person should be limited by their heritage while driving because as long as the person understands the rules of the road (which usually involves little to no knowing of English; simple stuff like, "Yield" and "Stop" can be learned pretty easily by the lovely color coding system) he/she should not have a problem driving.
@naeun93 And I also found out that even if the exams are in different languages, the signs that are tested in the exams are in english! so if you want to get your driver's license thru a different language test, it's implied that you already know enuf english to read all the necessary traffic signs in English!

it makes sense to have things only in english. you have no idea how many people in this country are just here and have no clue what people are saying. would you like someone driving around not being able to read anything. it doesn't just revolve around the stop sign. and its not directed at any one certain gender or race or nation. it makes sense to everyone.

but in everyday life, not having a driver's license can really hurt immigrant families who r willin to work hard.
for example, someone like my mother (who is just barely fluent in english) wouldn't be able to take care of the household or her kids without a car.
in principle, it's a good idea to have a unifying language, i agree. but in practice, aren't we depriving hard working immigrants a crucial tool to live?

@MrPoliticsGeek If your mother is "barely fluent in English" and she has trouble reading the signs that, for instance, warn of "reduced speed for construction ahead", is she not putting other people in danger? The signs they put on roadways aren't there just to look pretty.
I don't think people necessarily need to be incredibly fluent speakers, but they sure better be able to read the road signs...

The fact is, yes... with ANY SAFETY issues whether it be issuing gun permits, to a drivers license, a universal form of communication is crucial and SHOULD be manditory.

Apparently illegal aliens are involved in crimes inclusive of traffic accidents, DWI's, hit and runs, DUIs, and drunk driving deaths at rates higher than their percentage of the population, therefore, the carnage being inflicted by illegal aliens is no laughing matter. I was hit last year by a truck load of intoxicated aliens...

guess what... no insurance and the driver threatened us and backed his truck up repeated and tapped my husband with his vehicle while we were waiting for the police while shouting threats. Only about 12 open

I personally think English shudn't be compulsory b/c (1) it's hard to define how much English is "good enuf" and (2) it would lead to animosity towards valuable immigrants who contribute to this society! for more depth, we can talk over message!

Georgia tried to pass an English only bill as well. The bill failed to pass. My assumption is that passing a bill like this one would send an unwelcomely message to the recently opened Kia Motors Manufacturing in Georgia. You see, the business-man in many politicians aknowledged the 3,600 jobs Kia suppliers have created in West Georgia. Does it make sense to you?

This ad is all about political posturing and your analysis misses that completely. He really isn't an idiot. Certainly, the policy he describes is pointless and you make a good argument for why that is the case but I don't think he even really buys that.

Sure, if analyzed from a national perspective Tim James looks really stupid. Your analysis is off the mark though. He is not trying to get your vote. He is running in Alabama, where there are a lot of conservative idiots, like himself, who would be more than willing to buck federal funding for some nationalist, conservative pride. Given the political culture of the state in which he is running this ad might help him, and will certainly not bring upon him the catastrophe you project.

@aonsager13 actually, i think GHPro17 voiced a similar opinion a cuple days ago & u guys r spot on comin from a political standpoint. To use the populist sentiment in an econ situation lik this is political savvy in AL where only 2~4% actually speak another language at home, hardly "idiotic" as I claim in the vid. I guess I wanted expose difference b/t a politician's "common sense" & the average American's "common sense"! but u bring up a good point aonsager13!

Joey, you crack me up. We actually had a referendum similar to what James is proposing last year in Nashville that got shot down by a ratio of 3:1. I agree with the guy who said that running on populism is smart in this economy, though. Times like these make people circle the wagons. Although you didn't mention the way that laws like this negatively affect international views of Alabama and thus makes it less likely that foreign companies will come there.

And if language is so much an issue in driving, why do countries issue international driver's licenses? Should americans be able to read / speak german to be able to rent a car and drive it in Germany? Or learn italian if traveling to Rome and wanting to rent a car there? It's the principles that matter, not the technicalities. (sorry about the long post)

Even I, who speaks fluent English, identify the road signs more often by their colors than actually reading what the signs say. Also, the reason for having a driver's test is to show that one can abide by the traffic rules and can drive safely, not to show that one can speak another language--we've got ESL classes for that.

I was actually discussing this with my friends couple of days ago and I'm glad to see someone of the same opinion. I honestly cannot understand why a person should be limited by their heritage while driving because as long as the person understands the rules of the road (which usually involves little to no knowing of English; simple stuff like, "Yield" and "Stop" can be learned pretty easily by the lovely color coding system) he/she should not have a problem driving.

@naeun93 And I also found out that even if the exams are in different languages, the signs that are tested in the exams are in english! so if you want to get your driver's license thru a different language test, it's implied that you already know enuf english to read all the necessary traffic signs in English!

Campaigning on a populist platform to get reelected in a conservative state with a high unemployment rate and stagnant economy that this conveniently distracts the citizens from is sound strategy. 1. if you cant read English, all stop signs arent in red, i think one of the political sites said that 4 of the 12 are in different colors

I personally think international exposure/experience is increasingly becoming a necessity in a gov leadership role as increasing globalization is basically screaming into our faces that every issue is connected in some way globally.
