Love my 95 Toyota tercel , has a 3 speed auto trans with a 1.5 ltr engine the car has over 400,000 miles on it all original and I drive it every where to this day even take long road trips with it :)

@zacheryds I'm not too sure that an aftermarket muffler would sound good on a Tercel. Mine is stock. They're great cars, but there aren't as many performance parts for them compared to other cars.

I've been considering buying a Tercel, but think it might be too small and low to the ground to get in and out of. The 2 door might be better with a longer door and I'm thinking maybe a 99. Hearing that these manual transmissions get tired is worrisome since most used are very high miles and the Tercel seems rare in the used market. Too bad they stopped making them. The tail end reminds me of a later model Civic. Echo is a fugly POS and Yaris costs more than it's worth as well....even used.

you dont have to double clutch when its worn. clutch is clutch. gearbox is gearbox as is the synchronizers inside. some people do this: clutch plus accelerate(a little deep but not too much) then immediately shift to second. that should work.

@gtuani The synchronizers are so worn that they can't get the input shaft and gear rotating at the same speed and it results in a grind. A single-clutch rev-match like you're describing will save wear on the clutch but not the synchronizers.

@karlitin1 I forget exactly how I did it... it's been 5 years or so since I installed it. If you buy an aftermarket tach, it'll come with instructions. The hardest part is locating the VSS wire in your vehicle.

I got a instrument cluster from a paseo. It has a tach on it and it was literally just switching the two out. Nothing more. Also. There is a video on here of someone putting an aftermarket tach in his tercel and he points out the wire. Hope this helps.

on a 5speed, I can get about 110-115mph, but anyways, stock tercel is too slow, you should go with a 4efte xD, you will prolly like xD. it's almost bolt on, and it is the best swap for low cost.. you get stock 133hp/116lbs, you need to do a porting into the exhaust manifold so you take off restriction, 2.5" exhaust line, you get about 150/135, and with a Front mount intercooler you get about 160 I would say :)

My tercels a 1999 version automatic(unfortunatly but w/e) and I love it, great reliable car, pretty quick to for only having 1.5 liters... that is until you drop a 96 celica engine in it ;). o and for all you who got stiffed with those ugly grey plastic bumbers spray then gloss black it looks gorgeous

I got a 1981 Tercel SR5 with the 5 speed manual the car is so cool. I would love to have a newer one too, I really can't find all the parts I need, I got it for $130 and all it needs is to get the Tranny fixed (fourth gear is shot) and it needs seals on the transaxle because it leaks all over, and a left front CV axle and it'll be good. It has 182,000 miles and the engine works perfect.

You'll have to take the timing cover off and look at the timing marks to be sure.

Make sure the fuel pump and compression are good too.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, as I can only read English myself, but, my 95 Tercel gets 47 to 53 mpg with the stock 5efe. Many Toyotas are made in America as well. Do some research Toyota and maybe take some English lessons. EPA ratings for fuel economy are just simple tests done by manufacturers, they stick the car on a dyno and simulate real-world conditions to see what kind of MPG it gets. Like I said they simulate REAL WORLD conditions. My car is only supposed to get 27 mpg highway but I've gotten 44 mpg with it, and I average 33. Its all about driving technique noob. My engine is almost twice the displacement of mtheis85's Tercel, and it has 2 more cylinders.

The newer ones get better gas mileage because of the upgraded engine. I believe yours had a carburetor... mine is fuel injected. I've driven to Iowa and back 8 times with that car and never got below 42 mpg with an average speed of 75 mph.

Instead of all those able bodied cable tv watchers chilling in jail they should be taken to town and have them check air pressure on cars of citizens and save fuel help fight terrorism. All that resistance wears out your engine quicker breaks down the oil causing major engine ware air pressure is important.Check it once a week

I can prove that my car gets more than 39 mpg. I log the mileage every time I fill up the gas tank. I'll post a picture of the logs from my last road trip. And no, the engine is not de-tuned. It's a genuine 5E-FE. I know a few other people with Tercels and they get the same mileage that I do. Don't trust the EPA's fuel economy rating because it's too conservative.

I get about 26 mpg average, which is about what it should get. I believe that you get that mileage,but I don't believe you don't know how. Thats a shit load of mpg to not know how you get it. A lot of new cars get less than that. Hybrids even!If your not sure then your not sure,but do you have a stock intake? better yet what on your car is not stock?

The only things on my car that aren't stock are the cruise control and Paseo front seats. The latest generation Tercels (95-99) have a different engine (16v DOHC) than the older generations, so that may play a role in the fuel economy. I don't drive gently by any means. On the highway I'll average 70-75 mph and that's where I seem to get the best fuel economy.
