@Roadking1970 Thanks much to whoever shot the video. Made my heart contract. I was a kid in Friedburg when my dad was CSM of 1/32 in 71-73. Dude, I am very moved by these videos. I was there from 1984 to 86. I miss my time there. My barracks were the ones behind the last barrack you filmed by the parade field in Ray Barracks part 3. There used to be a WW2 tank on the spot where the rock is. Lots of memories, Thanks !
It was a great time !! But for the ppl who dont know... the soldiers might come back if obama gets them out soon enough.. cause theer were some developers they were interested but they sad no cause they might open up again and everything is still there just empty :) i do live in friedberg for 27 yrs :)))
I was there 92 to 95 1AD 2/67 AR That was a great place. I hate to hear it closed down. So I guess they're tearing it down now or will it be used for something else? What happened to The Rock Kershgoens?
He was in 2/67, worked in HHC. He liked throwing guys around in the motor pool, kind of a nut. LOL!! His first name is Matt.
He was in charge of a track vehicle which was later used as a sheild in Bosnia. I guess he really cleaned and chromed out the engine and during inspection, some sgt told him "Hey, son, this ain't no '57 Chevy!!"
You know it seems I do remember him. I was in communications, I was a PFC then so PFC Stiles. I worked with Cpl. "Duck" cause he didn't give a **** lol He could blow your eardrums out cause he had a yelp as loud as an air horn. Our 1st Sgt. was 1st Sgt Saylor. So I was there during that time frame.
Thanks for the videos, it brought back memeories for both my wife and I. I was with B Co 1/32 Armor and she was a civilian emplyee with 1/36 infintry from 1973 to 1975. Looking to maybe go back someday, hope it's still around to see.
You better get that ticket to Frankfurt this spring so you can still see it. Many of our brothers waited too long for Butzbach's Schloss Kaserne and got demolished before they returned.
BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES,THOUGHT 3AD WOULD LIVE AT RAY BARRACKS FOREVER.I WAS WITH THE 503d MP CO.1983-1986,WHEN I FIRST ARRIVED I THOUGHT THE GERMANS WOULD LEAVE BEFORE I DID.WHEN PCS TIME ROLLED AROUND I LOOKED FORWARD TO NEW DUTY STATION.NOW AND FOR THE PAST FEW YRS.GERMANY AND RAY BARRACKS HAS BEEN ON MY MIND,AND I MISS IT MORE THAN EVER BEFORE.LOOKING BACK THOSE WERE THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIVE AND WILL NEVER FORGET IT.THANKS ROADKING1970 FOR THE VIDEOS AND MEMORIES.
Cannot stop watching this video.I used to live above The Snitzelhaus on the kaiserstrasse, worked in Rosbach 1980/84.Made some great mates off the base.I come from Liverpool and would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.Does anyone remember the outdoor baths in Bad Nauheim more drinking than swimming.Friedberg will miss the yanks.
i was working in friedberg around 1979-82.used to party with gi.s and another brit called mike spellacy.he worked in the px selling suits.we drank in waynes bar, glasshouse and bars in the altstadt.does anyone know a sgt.ray lopez served around 79/80.possibly done a 2nd tour around 85.
Glad you enjoyed it. When I was there 70-74, we were getting 4DM to $1.00 and our money's worth on Kaiserstrasse, if you know what I mean. ;-) Was ist Los?
Aco 2bn/67ar, Alpha three-two Delta...87-New Year's Eve 90...Thanks Roadking! I've been shouting at the monitor for 30 minutes now! Those were my original barracks by the rock in 87..TOP floor..EVERY morning formation under those trees meant that I had to change my jacket or hat because of getting shat upon..Thank you so very much...Can you do Kaiserstrasse and Am Bahnhof in Frankfurt next?? ;-)

The bronze plaque attached to the side of the rock was dedicated to our 24 KIA in OIF1. The original intent was to have the rock moved when the installation closed.
Ownership of the Rock has been transfered back to the 3AD Association by German authorities and we are negotiating having it returned to it's original location in Kirch-Goens, outside old Ayers Kaserne. If that will become a sticky point, second option is a suitable location in Friedberg. Have also talked with Mayor of Friedberg on this issue. In both instances, the Rock will be turned in to a Memorial to all who served under it since the mid 1960's.
I have been working on this project since 2007 when I made and posted the videos. Hoping the final placement with Memorial Ceremony will be in conjunction with our annual reunion, to be held in Germany that same year. The ceremony will be posted on youtube and covered by AFN-Europe.
The rock was originally supposed to have been moved when Ray closes (That was the intent and argument made when the plaque was applied under COL Mansoor). This already became an issue when the plaque was made since you can't just throw up a permanent monument outside the U.S. The rock was cleaned, leveled, and had the bronze plaque applied to one side dedicated to the 24 dead and 211 wounded on OIF1. There are actually rules that apply here.
I think Wiesbaden is still open. Why not move the rock there and keep it among those who have some sense of appreciation what these monuments mean and represent?
When Ray closed, the signage was removed by the 1AD, packed in a box marked to be delivered to the 1AD Museum. For, whatever reason, the garrison commander did not decide to dictate the fate of the "Rock". The facility engineer, Peter Buschmaas, was surprised that there was not a re-location order cut for the monument, but there was none. The post grounds, incuding all real property and any buildings and structures remaining were returned to German Federal authorities.
Well done on this video Thank you. I had no clue that Ray Barracks had closed. So very sad.
"Iron Dukes"
"Battlecats"
I was Stationed there 93-96 99-02. On both tours I was lucky enough to serve in Bravo (Battlecats) Company 2-67 Armor for both tours. I will miss the old post. Ray Barracks end of an era...
Brought back alot of memories. I was stationed there from Jan 67 to Aug 69 with the Hawk C/6/562 Arty and then B/6/59 Arty. Would like to hear from anybody else that was there.
Thanks for the videos on Ray Barracks, I was stationed there '72-'74 with 2/27th FA, 3d AD. I'd really love to see the place again in person before it's redeveloped. Thanks again for the memories.
I was stationed at Ray Barracks from 1972-1974 in B btry 2/27.I enjoyed my time there.Met a lot of great people. It's sad that the place is shut down now.
I have been out of touch.... sorry, why was RB deactivated ? Was it funding ? We weren't welcome anymore ? Downsizing ? Thanks again... I have all 3 parts bookmarked !
Congressional legislation of Base Re-Alignment that was passed in 98 put most of the German bases on the chopping block, by 2011 it will be complete. Heidelberg is shutting down and moving to Wiesbaden Airbase by 2011.
Was there from 1993-1995 HHC 4/67 Bandits ! 11 C. Want to give a shout out to (from whom I remember).. Sgt. Cassanova, Sgt. Buschman, Spc. Hecksel, Spc. Finelli, PFC Rose, to the rest in the Mortar platoon... you know who you are :)
Great videos. I think the only thing I missed was a shot of the main gate. My wife was pregnant with our first in 1984 and I worked the gate because she was due to deliver and my unit was in the field. Still married after 24 years.
Main Gate was removed, all signage gone and fenced up. Their intent was to remove all indications of any military presence left on the post. The only access was thru the rear gate with the local armed guards.
Wow1 seems like old times - Some of the best times of my young life 1983-1985 C co 2/37 armor was the company armormer under capt. brookshire and 1st donald bunch if there anyone still around would love to hear from you David Dugan, NC
Go visit Ray Barracks while it still is in one piece. Friedberg is in the process of looking for developers to tear it down and build new. That info is straight from the current Mayor Michael Keller.
This was my home from 95-97, makes me want to cry because my time in 2/67 & 2/37AR were the best times of my life.... I'd give anything to relive them again.
It is amazing how one post can remain a part of your soul. I can still feel the ground shake in my motor pool from the M1's and never forget the exhaust smell. Glad I had the opportunity to be a part of the Ray Barracks mystique. SSG Howser Bandits 95-97
Thank you for your posting, its hard to see my old post closed but I'm glad you've posted this. Great tour, i had forgotten how large the post really was!
Thank you Roadking for this memory provoking video!! Some of the best days of my life were spent here with 3rd and 1st AD. It saddens me that Ray Barracks and other kassernes throughout Hessen have closed. Like many of you, I took a little bit of Germany home and in turn left a portion of me behind. Thanks again! MSG Benham 23rd Engineer Battalion. Sappers!!
RoadKing1970...You've brought back so many wonderful memories and yet I can't help but be saddened by the loss of a piece of my past...Somehow it was comforting to know that it had 'always' been there and 'always would be'...Alas, it is gone along with my youth...It was dishearting to know that it changed hands from the 3AD to 1AD...I'll always remember it as a memeber of the 3rd Plt 503rd MP Co...3rd AD...from Jan 7, '76 to May 3, '78...
Thanks for makin this great video of Ray Barracks. Its really nice to see and go back in time.. I spent a lot of time there because my ex husband was stationed there in 1-36 Infantry Charly Company... I miss all my people who were stationed there!! Thanks for that!! I will tell my friends (soldiers) about the videos so they have memories to... Thanks a lot!! Nadine Pugh

apologize if my post on previous video - where I shared my forgotten memories photoblog - sounded like self-advertisement. I just wanted to share memories with other people which may enjoy.
Thanks for the great videos, once again ! Great stuff !
It was a very sad moment for me and my husband to see that this barracs it was closed, thanks for the memories. My husband it was in Charlie Company First Battallion Infantry from 1982 to 1985. The McNamee Family, Nebraska.
Please wish your husband Happy Veteran's Day Mrs. McMamee and thank him from us. A shame that no one else will have the honor of being stationed at such memorable Post.
Thanks you for your wishes, I see that you are in Germany, we miss Germany a lot specially I miss it because I have family there, it will be nice to go back there.
Our older son born there in Frankfurt, my husband meet me there in Friedberg nice old days.
Actually I am back in the US now. I was there in June with my wife and then again in August by myself. My mother was German and my Dad a GI stationed in Karlsruhe. I have been bi-lingual all my life, so went I went in the Army, there I was back in the FRG. I am a retired cop and spent 90-92 in the Gulf as a contractor. Almost went back in August, had an interview with Dyncorp Int, but they only wanted to pay 149K per year. Not enough for me. So I'm back in the States working..
looks like a lot of stuff was built after I left in '89

Dude, I am very moved by these videos. I was there from 1984 to 86. I miss my time there. My barracks were the ones behind the last barrack you filmed by the parade field in Ray Barracks part 3. There used to be a WW2 tank on the spot where the rock is. Lots of memories, Thanks !

I was there 92 to 95 1AD 2/67 AR That was a great place. I hate to hear it closed down. So I guess they're tearing it down now or will it be used for something else? What happened to The Rock Kershgoens?
tnflash1973 3 years ago
We were there about the same time. Do you remember SPC Flyte?
Efilnikufesin575 3 years ago
No I'm sorry I sure don't. Were you in 2/67? After all the years I need a memory boost!!LOL
tnflash1973 3 years ago
He was in 2/67, worked in HHC. He liked throwing guys around in the motor pool, kind of a nut. LOL!! His first name is Matt.
He was in charge of a track vehicle which was later used as a sheild in Bosnia. I guess he really cleaned and chromed out the engine and during inspection, some sgt told him "Hey, son, this ain't no '57 Chevy!!"
Efilnikufesin575 3 years ago
You know it seems I do remember him. I was in communications, I was a PFC then so PFC Stiles. I worked with Cpl. "Duck" cause he didn't give a **** lol He could blow your eardrums out cause he had a yelp as loud as an air horn. Our 1st Sgt. was 1st Sgt Saylor. So I was there during that time frame.

You better get that ticket to Frankfurt this spring so you can still see it. Many of our brothers waited too long for Butzbach's Schloss Kaserne and got demolished before they returned.

The bronze plaque attached to the side of the rock was dedicated to our 24 KIA in OIF1. The original intent was to have the rock moved when the installation closed.
zipdedooda 3 years ago

Roadking1970 3 years ago
The rock was originally supposed to have been moved when Ray closes (That was the intent and argument made when the plaque was applied under COL Mansoor). This already became an issue when the plaque was made since you can't just throw up a permanent monument outside the U.S. The rock was cleaned, leveled, and had the bronze plaque applied to one side dedicated to the 24 dead and 211 wounded on OIF1. There are actually rules that apply here.
zipdedooda 3 years ago
I think Wiesbaden is still open. Why not move the rock there and keep it among those who have some sense of appreciation what these monuments mean and represent?
zipdedooda 3 years ago
When Ray closed, the signage was removed by the 1AD, packed in a box marked to be delivered to the 1AD Museum. For, whatever reason, the garrison commander did not decide to dictate the fate of the "Rock". The facility engineer, Peter Buschmaas, was surprised that there was not a re-location order cut for the monument, but there was none. The post grounds, incuding all real property and any buildings and structures remaining were returned to German Federal authorities.

Great videos. I think the only thing I missed was a shot of the main gate. My wife was pregnant with our first in 1984 and I worked the gate because she was due to deliver and my unit was in the field. Still married after 24 years.
dacallihan 3 years ago
Main Gate was removed, all signage gone and fenced up. Their intent was to remove all indications of any military presence left on the post. The only access was thru the rear gate with the local armed guards.

Tschüss, for now
