My Husband had the bear outside the tent the last night of our stay... he nibbled at the leftovers on the grill... my bad.. should of known better! Sadly did not have the camera....
That's a Florida black bear(Ursus americanus floridanus)an endangered subspecies of the American black bear(Ursus americanus). There are only about 1,500 living in florida, southern georgia and alabama.
We saw 2 today about 3 miles east of Hwy 40. Cutting an ONF Christmas tree - first bear was HUGE, about 100 yds away. 2nd was smaller and closer. Tracks were all over the place, in some cases right in the prior human tracks. I've lived in Ocala 50+ years, these were my 2nd and 3rd bear sightings. Cool.
I guess we should feel kind of special. This big girl was about 15-20 feet from our tent... we left her alone LOL.... and it was at Juniper springs campground.. which was bare b/c the spring is being "fixed"
Saw a huge male at Farles Prairie a couple days ago just before dark slow driving the road.

I saw one yesterday- sadly it got hit by a car near Jacksonville and was already death. Really would like to see a living one in the wild.
