endangered indeed. all R38s once on the A have been retired and beginning January 1, R42s at Jamaica will be moved to the C. by mid to late february, the rest of the R38s will be retired. cannot wait till the R42s are removed from the E. i along with most of its riders really hate those cars
An update from the TA worker Beginning Monday December 8, 2008 the (C) line becomes R40 Slant and R42 in eight car trains. Likely the R38s will shift to the (A) line to and there will be still some R40 slant on the (A).
i hate them because they are rusted tin cans with ugly interiors. why else were the CI R42s the first cars retired by the R160s? yeah, i was told R40M/42s will go on the C and R38s will be shifted to the A, a bit of an improvement even though R40s and R38s are only a bit better than the R42s and R44s
when the MTA says "R40", i think they mean both R40 slants and R40Ms. i might consider going back into subway filmography especially, when the E and F get R160s
perhaps in february, next semester, i will have a weird schedule that leaves with four hours between classes on tuesdays and thursdays. if i have nothing to do during that time, i will take a few videos since i go to school on the C and F and they are expected to change its fleet soon. i hope i could go to europe next summer and get a few vids of the moscow metro. i love that system!
all the St. Louis cars (R38s-R44s) were crappy from the beginning. that is why the company went out of business. the R42s and R44s were the final blow. st louis was really horrible at building stainless steel, unlike Budd, which is why the R32s are still in service and much better than at the St Louis cars.
You know Pullman standard did cause problem to the R46 back in the 70's and 80's and the R46 were breaking down and had truck cracks and was poor codition but the MTA did make a law suit back then in the 80's and after that the problem was sloved then the R46 were rebuilt begining late 1989 and between 1989 til 1992 by MK. The MTA never ordered cars from pullman standard again after the R46 problem back in the 70's.
pullman is still here, but they no longer build subway cars, just freight cars. i do not blame the R46 problem on them. it is totally the MTA's fault for not testing the new trucks just to save a few dollars. st louis and the R44s, though, that is a different story.
I miss the R 38s. They were great cars and far better than the pieces of junk they have the R 160s. The R 38s could have lasted a few more years!

so pretty much its now R40S/R40M/R42 on the C and R38/R40S/R44 on the A..but what ab the E it has a few R42s as well with the remaining R32s rite

next year, all R42s on the E will be moved to the A to replace the R38s. the E will then use R32s and either R46s or R160s.

Why do you hate the R42?
I love the R42 because there the best.

The R40 slant will be on the C line and few on the A line.

shouldn't R40Ms go on the C line. R40Ms and R42s can operate together but R40 slants cannot, though i think that would look cool.
thesubwaynut 3 years ago
Well the R40 slant are going on the C also.

So when are you going to subway filmography?
You should strat recording other transit system also.

"all R38s once on the A have been retired". Not true. I saw an R38 A train today (12/16/08). But they are very rare now and dying off quickly

R38s are back on the A, but they will be the first cars retired by the R160s, set to go in February 2009
