All the videos from this Houston show are awesome. One thing I keep noticing, though, is how Neil Schon basically ignores Steve Perry every time Perry comes near him. There's rarely even a hint of acknowledgment. When he left Journey, Perry stated that he felt he "was never really part of the band" (paraphrasing). Are we seeing why he perhaps felt that way?
@moony9472 I'm sure there was a lot of things besides that. Steve said in interviews that the rest of the band was already developed and outgoing when he got there, and as shy of a person that he seemed at the time, I could understand that statement. I'm sure he got over that more as time went by, but when you're that big as a commercial and musical group, playing to stadium-sized audiences and everybody knows who you are and your songs, I'm sure that would take its toll on anyone, not just him.
I, like many I suppose, were one of the lucky one's to see this band live. I still listen to them to this day and they're truly one of the most talented bands that have come around in the last 20 years. They really did have it all, great vocals, great drums, guitars and fan appreciation. There's not too many bands nowadays that can capture an audience like these guys did.
@daspudster01 you are correct, looks like Steve did set off the fireworks! A pedal rigged up for him to step on @ 2:08-2:09! Love that Steve you can step on mt pedal Anytime!
@gupper83 So frickin what!!! Neil is a douche bag....wrong......couldn't carry that or a TUNE on his own! Will give him an attaboy for his song writing with Steve!
Journey had their share of ballads but they could also kick ass, awesome song, Neil Schon is his bad ass self from a time when bands played real rock and roll not like the crap bands of today (except for aerosmith, acdc, etc) : )
I was at this show, actually both nights, was in my high school prime, saw both shows on the '83 Frontiers tour in Houston as well. How lucky to have seen these guys in their prime, not to mention all the others, like Rush and Van Halen, maybe some of these are doing reunions, but it will never ever be like it was.
@brettboykin I saw the same concert but at Ventura fair Grounds in California! Festival seating, and billy Squire opened for them! But if I'm correct this was 1981 escape tour that I saw,and thats playing here! Frontiers was after escape and I saw that at the Forum in Los Angeles! And later became friends with Steve Perry! Guess how? My friend cut his hair in Beverly Hills! I knew they were breaking up weeks before it even hit the news I remember! Good times!
@PeetiePediozi Indeed! Plus I didn't know that the old Roland G-505 (one of the controllers of the old 24-pin Roland GR-300 guitar synthesizer) could rock so awesomely!
Just curious if anyone else over the years has noticed @ 2:08-2:09 Steve is taking small steps over to...have they got a pedal rigged up for him to set the fireworks off?
Both Jon & Neal both duck & Steve has both hands over his hair/head?
Ross plugs his ear lol & Smitty keeps on drumming...
these guys were champs...this line up...and the one w/gregg rolie...i seen them w/rolie directly after steve "machine gun" smith joined...the evolution tour...and they were just on fire, totally blew the place apart...glad i saw that show...it was in a small arena. steve smith is truly a drummers drummer...one of the top 20 in the world. that whole band were 1st class musicians. musicality w/pop sensibilties. good stuff. :)
You mean that little swiggle when he's belting out the high vocals. Yeah cute, funny, kinda like he doesn't know what to do with his hands without a microphone in them. Love that too. One of his enduring movements that all of his fans love.
'Line of Fire' is another favorite of mine. They play it just as well here as they played it on the live "Captured" album. Of course Neal Schon's guitar playing smokes once again.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this video! What energy they all had... Such a great group... Such collaboration with SP, NS, JC, RV, SS in this era of Journey. Miss this magical group!
Just amazing this man can sing anything. He probably could do hiphop rap and make millions. I love how he dances in the, when you love a woman video. Hes the greatest!!!
Doesnt he have the best dance moves?! I love it when he dances in the after the fall video. I just wish I could meet him and give him a big bear hug!!
Whooooo! is right. Journey at their finest. I could watch Steve Perry all day, all night, and wish I was there for this concert. Steve could just sit on a street corner anywhere and hum, and I'd think that would be fabulous.
pyros? LOL Wow, I didnt think they were using pyros back then! awesome! Only thing missing from modern concerts of today is the giant TV screen. Now I'm sure they didn't have that back in 1981!
When Steve was having the hip problem and the band wanted him to come out and tour they suggested he sit on a stool and sing. Can you imagine that with how much he used to jump around? That would have driven him nuts!
If Steve Perry was so fuckin' great, how come his solo career never took off? That's why they call it a GROUP..To the people who think the world stopped when SP left Journey, move on with your sadass life..The guy who's doing the singing now is doing a pretty good job.
Man, these guys were GREAT together. Neal is a killer guitar player! Too bad he doesn't have a vocal GOD like Steve Perry to sing for his band anymore. I just can't even imagine their new karaoke vocalist singing this song.
WOW!!! Love it!!!! (Love it even more because it's in TEXAS!!!) I could watch Steve Perry all day! One of the best bands of our lifetime.....Miss the band they were.
dude, I'm 18, almost 19 and I love Steve and Journey. Steve Perry rocks my world.

I love this Houston concert, Steve jumps around with great energy in his white shoes! For som reason he was more passive on stage in Japan.

Perhaps he was showing cultural sensitivity because the Japanese are more reserved than Americans.

Embrace & enjoy the BIG 6-0!!!!
For more than 30 years, you've given me & legions of other longtime fans both BEAUTFIUL MEMORIES & UNFORGETTABLE MUSIC.
I followed you from the verrrrry beginning, thru the '80s, on thru FTLOSM.
LOVED EACH & EVERY MOMENT & WOULDN'T TRADE THEM FOR ANYTHING.
Your music (solo & with STEVE PERRY's ~JOURNEY~) has been part of the Soundtrack of My Life. (Bob Dylan's provided much of the rest. ;) ALL THE BEST.
