it's a good tutorial for mixing drums and I like their music. i guess they dont use a drum sampler [like Battery or whatever], just lay the samples themselves into audio tracks.. ive been making music with cubase for at least five years and im really happy for some reason that these guys dont mention ab-ton live at all. anyway, keep rocking, dodge and fuski:)
This is really good, they go in depth & keep you interested. I've been making electronic music for about two & half years & this gave me the advice I needed to beef up & make my average sounding drums sound tighter & more professional.
um..theres 12 audio channels of drum samples sitting there...this is actually a very BAD "drums tutorial" guys. what does a "master finger drummer" use to play and sequence his drum patterns??? no response expected (steinberg probably wouldnt like your answer?). where to you load your samples and how do you play them and sequence them????
@8messa...How is this a bad drums tutorial? Its dubstep, its normal to have extreme amounts of drums, you can route them all into one mixer strip if you wanted to, but if you want a more manageable mix on the drums then you'd obviously have individual strips.
I've watched a lot of dubstep tutorials and this is BY FAR the most entertaining to watch. You guys need a radio show or something, I love the banter.
@neeharavi I use Logic but I've used Cubase a little bit and I think the principle is the same on most DAW's. Just make a new audio track (as opposed to a software instrument track) and have one for each drum, so you can apply EQ and effects to each drum individually, and then use buses, so for instance I send all my kicks to a kick bus and all my snares to a snare bus etc... and then I send all my drums to a drum bus as well. Im sure there's tutorials for everything i've just said.
@OfficialGlowbox yeah that makes sense, gonna try the bus technique since it sounds more organized than having individual drum hits all over the place
@OfficialGlowbox yeah i know about using buses, just didnt know the basic drum loading technique since in things like reason you had a specific drum machine whereas here you're just dragging samples into tracks
@neeharavi Oh sorry for sounding patronising then ;) i think there's a drum machine like you just described in Logic but i find using multitracks easier.
"some people layer their kicks with hi hats" What? Are you serious? i've never heard of that. I've heard of layering with another more high pitched or EQd kick. i'm going to try that trick.
I love how honest you are about how you produce your music and what your using. I am the same way, if someone shows interest in music and what I'm doing then I will show them everything I know. So many producers beat around the bush about what software and samples they are using! Thanks Dodge and Fuski, much respect for you guys keep up the good work!
Thank you guys so much for doing this. I've been making mashups a lot but really didn't have much (if any) gameplan in terms of how to start out production wise. Your tutorials have been a great help with getting me on track. Cheers to you.
Can someone help me please?Does anyone knows if you got to sidechain in a drum and bass track?I mean are you actualy sidechaining the bass on the drum loop or something?Thanx :)

Does anyone have any suggestions to where is a good place to get some nice dubstep able rides/crashes? In all my sample packs I have about 3 decent ones and am seriously desperate for some new ones. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
hey guys. i totally appreciate everything you're doing. you've cleared up a bunch of stuff that i was confused on. is there any way i could get any details on which vengeance packs you utilize? i've realized my samples aren't up to par, and some guidance would be great. thanks!

You guys seem really chill. Thanks for the tutorials! They're very helpful and you guys do indeed get right to the important stuff. (As dodge put it, no hand waving advice here) Cheers!
Is there any particular reason why you guys don't use a sampler for your drum programming? Just wondering if there's an advantage to using separate audio tracks for each drum element versus drawing in midi notes. Thanks!

Hi guys, I hope somebody will read this. I'm 15 yrs old artist. I make dubstep, d'n'b and hip hop. I'll upload more songs when i get more subscribes. My next song is little bit harder dubstep. I know my english sucks... So Thump this comment! It takes only 3 sec to thumb up, dubstep song takes around week to make and master. Thanks- Deduure <3 watch?v=6kVp2PjZZdc
Is the best way to go about inputting the drum samples to put them in through groove agent and then group them up and draw them on in the key tool? seems a lot of effort to drag each sample onto a audio track and duplicate it out etc etc? Im learning from scratch after moving from fl studio and these tutorials are amazing, shame theres so long between them! cheers.
great tutorial, I'm a drummer who's starting to get deep into production. Any tips for recording acoustic drums. I'm going to be triggering the snare and kick (possibly have hi-hats and other trig pads) so I can apply samples to those MIDI notes. I really want to have an organic feel, bonham heavy style. Even tho I know thats gunna fly in the face of the tight sound dubstep needs, I think it could be great for making loops, applying human swing to beats. Any thoughts on this?
Could you elaborate more on quantizing (or randomization of quantize) and adding swing to audio files via cubase on audio tracks?
I know within the midi editor when using groove agent or the like you can easily added a certain % of swing/random Q (so everything isnt so robotic) and I reckon you guys are doing this to an extent from hearing your tunes.
Do you take added certain % of random quantize after placing audio files and if so what range do you find is a good one?
love your work guys, im a 19 yr old producer from perth, aus. this tutorial was amazing, i understood everything you were saying you explain things well. and i can relate to using the wrong samples in tunes. for a while i used hip hop snares with reverb in drum and bass tracks ahaha
Didn't quite get it. What programs are you using? Are you guys using Cubase 6 just for drums and stuff or are you creating full songs with it? Is there any other programs you use for creating music? Please answer, thanks. BTW - your tracks are SICK, new tracks coming soon?
@locksh We use Cubase 6 for everything tune making wise. This was just the first tutorial, which focused on drums. We're gonna be doing a bassline one very soon watch this space ;)
What kind of software do you recommend using for new producers getting into making music? Obviously you guys are using Cubase here, but have you sampled, say FL Studio or Logic Pro? I don't have any experience with Cubase, do you think its worth investing in if I've already become somewhat attached to FL Studio?
could you do a tutorial on layering different sounds to make thick basslines that don't come across as messy or maybe one on how to make a drone/swell type sound for background ambiance to fill out the mix ??? thanks for the vid. looking forward to more :D
btw for anyone who looks at tutorials using chrome and wants a quick way at being able to see the video in detail and still switching to your work without maximising the video. check out this extension: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fkpaakpeehepibjpdmoocdaonognfiog
hey guys, i just want to say how much we all appreciate you taking the time to make these videos and helping out young producers, it shows how much you guys are dedicated to your fans. one thing I might suggest is in the next tutorial, could you try recording directly from the computer so we can see what you guys do in more detail. And record through a mic so we can hear you clearly, no criticism to you at all keep making amazing music and im sure you guys will only get better :D x
@GAZOFNAZ we're gonna use Fraps next time for video feed. regarding audio the video camera we have doesn't have a direct/mic input and cubase locks out other audio devices in windows when it's open so we can't record audio inside the computer. only real solution is getting another computer plugged into the mixer and recording via that & syncing back up but to be honest we tried it before and the editing was a nightmare... we'll look into options though
@dodgeandfuskitv oh okay, well no worries im sure they'll turn out fine. btw is there much of a difference to working in ableton instead of reason for what you guys are doing??
Just so you know fraps is ingame related only, or am I still using an older build. Better to get camtasia or anything related, it also captures your audio created with Cubase.
@dodgeandfuskitv you can get around that problem by deselecting the option that says "release driver when application is in background" on the devices tab at the top.
Hey guys. Im trying to recreate everything you do in this video(s) and it would be very nice, if you could actually name the samples youve used. For example, you can see the Kick if a "hard" kick from Vengeance Essential House Vol. 2.. but not the exact number.. you know what i mean? its quite hard to figure it out, since there are so many kicks (for example) could you name them and write them in the description? that would help me sooo much
Nice and concise tutorial, nothing particularly new for me, but I'm looking forward to future ones. It would be great if you did one on mixing, especially with how you mix the drop to get it really heavy. And a tutorial on leads wouldn't do any harm either.:)
i was wondering if you could make a Pt2 to the drums tut and talk a little about reverbing drums and fx channels, stereo/mono? the advantages/disadvantages?
Fantastic! Do you haven the cymbals and high hats sidechained to the kicks? Is there reverb on the drum bus or on any of the individual channels? Cheeeers.
Great video! You hit almost every point that other masterclasses include/stumble through and you even included important caveats that many miss. All in a short video and you guys are entertaining to watch. Only things I can think of that you missed are 1) general compression advice for samples that need it and 2) send FX
seriously amazing work guys! need to get a bit better with screen casting but @leaguemate hit it right on the head. anything from you all is truly appreciated!!!!
@dropthatbassline They asked what we futured tutorials we'd like to see.
I merely answered that question. Since they're proffesionals and im really from it, I believe any tutorial they do will learn me allot. However i have been training for a long time and my biggest issue is binding/making leads with wobbles. Im not asking that they show me how they make a lead for they're sick tunes, but how you make a basic lead and get it to fit with modulated basslines.
seriously amazing work guys! need to get a bit better with screen casting but @leaguemate hit it right on the head. anything from you all is truly appreciated!!!!

You guys ROCK!

love your work guys, im a 19 yr old producer from perth, aus. this tutorial was amazing, i understood everything you were saying you explain things well. and i can relate to using the wrong samples in tunes. for a while i used hip hop snares with reverb in drum and bass tracks ahaha

great vid. audio is a bit muddy but i'm sure you guys are aware of that haha

Didn't quite get it. What programs are you using? Are you guys using Cubase 6 just for drums and stuff or are you creating full songs with it? Is there any other programs you use for creating music? Please answer, thanks. BTW - your tracks are SICK, new tracks coming soon?
locksh 5 months ago
@locksh We use Cubase 6 for everything tune making wise. This was just the first tutorial, which focused on drums. We're gonna be doing a bassline one very soon watch this space ;)

@dodgeandfuskitv
The main reason I wanted to watch this wasn't so much the tutorial, but to learn how to pronounce Fuski's name.
I wasn't sure if it was FOO-Ski, or FUH-Ski.
Thanks to you guys, now I know. ^_^
Great tute btw, even though I use Ableton.

Great vid!! Please do more on bass design and patterns and making them fit and work. Chopping and arranging :)
mrpawelm 5 months ago

GAZOFNAZ 5 months ago 10
@GAZOFNAZ we're gonna use Fraps next time for video feed. regarding audio the video camera we have doesn't have a direct/mic input and cubase locks out other audio devices in windows when it's open so we can't record audio inside the computer. only real solution is getting another computer plugged into the mixer and recording via that & syncing back up but to be honest we tried it before and the editing was a nightmare... we'll look into options though
dodgeandfuskitv 5 months ago 4
@dodgeandfuskitv oh okay, well no worries im sure they'll turn out fine. btw is there much of a difference to working in ableton instead of reason for what you guys are doing??
GAZOFNAZ 5 months ago
@dodgeandfuskitv
Just so you know fraps is ingame related only, or am I still using an older build. Better to get camtasia or anything related, it also captures your audio created with Cubase.
Keep this up!
thaman667 5 months ago
@dodgeandfuskitv you can get around that problem by deselecting the option that says "release driver when application is in background" on the devices tab at the top.

Hey guys. Im trying to recreate everything you do in this video(s) and it would be very nice, if you could actually name the samples youve used. For example, you can see the Kick if a "hard" kick from Vengeance Essential House Vol. 2.. but not the exact number.. you know what i mean? its quite hard to figure it out, since there are so many kicks (for example) could you name them and write them in the description? that would help me sooo much

do one for bass? :D
felixfsmyth 5 months ago
Nice and concise tutorial, nothing particularly new for me, but I'm looking forward to future ones. It would be great if you did one on mixing, especially with how you mix the drop to get it really heavy. And a tutorial on leads wouldn't do any harm either.:)

i was wondering if you could make a Pt2 to the drums tut and talk a little about reverbing drums and fx channels, stereo/mono? the advantages/disadvantages?
DrUnKkAz 5 months ago
Fantastic! Do you haven the cymbals and high hats sidechained to the kicks? Is there reverb on the drum bus or on any of the individual channels? Cheeeers.
spotsport 5 months ago
Thank you so much for doing this. It's always great to see how other producers do their thing... helps tremendously.

Great video! You hit almost every point that other masterclasses include/stumble through and you even included important caveats that many miss. All in a short video and you guys are entertaining to watch. Only things I can think of that you missed are 1) general compression advice for samples that need it and 2) send FX
Looking forward to the others!

So do you guys write all the drums and EQ it first, then you go with the bassline and all the other stuff?

seriously amazing work guys! need to get a bit better with screen casting but @leaguemate hit it right on the head. anything from you all is truly appreciated!!!!
dropthatbassline 5 months ago
@dropthatbassline They asked what we futured tutorials we'd like to see.
I merely answered that question. Since they're proffesionals and im really from it, I believe any tutorial they do will learn me allot. However i have been training for a long time and my biggest issue is binding/making leads with wobbles. Im not asking that they show me how they make a lead for they're sick tunes, but how you make a basic lead and get it to fit with modulated basslines.
