West and Thelma were partners in the Sidewalk Cafe, and Thelma had been married to Lucky Luciano's West Coast righthand guy, Pasquale Di Cicco, who called himself a theatrical agent but was a cruel guy who took advantage of women...he later married Gloria Vanderbilt when she was 17. Thelma divorced Di Cicco over 'extreme cruelty' a year before she was murdered. He left LA the day after her body was found. Thelma had agreed to testify against Lucky and her life was threatened. I think he did it.
This are such great clips...and the director was Roland West, her married lover, who was a suspect in her death. He locked her out of the house that night...if not, she would have lived. What a loss. Love Chester Morris with her...She was smart, beautiful, sexy, funny, and athletic...Thanks for sharing this tribute!
Gad, Thelma was exquisite--and funny! You can't take your eyes off her--definition of a star. Carole Lombard and she shared similar comic gifts/beauty, but I think "Toddy" was even more down to earth.
Yeah it's really sad how she ended up. & I 'm plauged by the most morbid facination I swear. & that's how I ruined it for myself. If you scout around on the net. You can dig up crime scene photos of her dead in the front seat of her Packard. & worse there's also autopsy photos. It's difficult to shake those images. But to be honest she was running with the wrong pack. & just living way too fast. But what a beauty. She was a godess of the silent screen. With nearly 130 pictures to her credit.
This tragic woman is a topic of Hollywood hauntings. Her untimely and likely violent death may be behind some of the paranormal experiences at her old restaraunt on Pacific coast highway. She lived there on the second floor and died in her garage, on top of the hill above her restaurant. Her death was a Hollywood mystery for many years. A homicide detective wrote a book in the 40's, and he believed she was socked unconscious, placed in her car and the engine then turned on in order to kill her.
@loveoldmovies I think you are absolutely right there--Courageous Thelma told the mob to 'get lost' when they wanted her cafe--and they rubbed her out. Yes, THAT's tragic--she was a fine comedic actress and great beauty, to boot. Lets watch her good movies and remember that her films aren't 'tragic'---but great fun--and so was she.
She's been my throb for many years! Andy Edmonds wrote a bio of her called "Hot Toddy". She unfortunately had a fatal attraction for big time hoods, and was reportedly Lucky Lucianos girlfriend. Luciano controled the actors union fund and was shaking down the studios. She threatened to tell the DA, but the DA was corrupt and told the mob. It was her death sentence. She was found dead, ruled a suicide, but her body had bruises and blood stains. Thelma RIP.
There are no reliable sources cited in the book for any of this rubbish.
Edmonds "biography" must be the worst book I've ever read; full of invented dialogue, unfounded speculation and lacking any serious evidence of murder.
The likeliest explanation for Thelma's death remains an accident, unless a proper biographer proves otherwise
Pretty is pretty no matter what time period you are talking about.

@lana1939 There is still talk that Roland West had Thelma Todd killed. Wasn't West in the mob?

I don't really like the song, but I've had a huge crush on Thelma Todd for years.
I watch any movie or video she's in.
