@GirlLuvsMuscles - I saw an interview years ago where they asked each member of the band why they were still together after all these years and each one said the same thing: Charlie Watts! Then they said hey Charlie everyone says you guys are still together because of you what do you have to say to that, and he said "Rubbish" very funny stuff, but true I am sure.
Bobby Keys is playing the part of Ron White in tonights Vid.
I don't think Ron Wood true talent is really showcased in the Stones-his slide playing is phenomenal. Jagger's instrumental talent is the harmonica-on a similar scale to Charley Musselwhite, but again talent that is mostly untapped. Mick Taylor should never have left the group and is amazingly strong too. I agree with gottajamm.
[Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: "We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?"; Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it." — "60 Minutes" (5/12/96)]
Woody is a badass when he's on. Got great tone and a wonderful sense of melody. The tone Woody copped with the Faces is as identifiable as anything in rock n' roll.
@gottajamm Read Keith's autobio to learn about Mick T and Woodie. Taylor had the role of lead guitarist while Keith and Woodie are able to mix their guitars together offering their typical sound...
@GirlLuvsMuscles Actually Mick and Keith make alot more money than Charlie due to songwriting royalties, which makes the album sales and touring money that much more important to him.
@YouCantBuyClass I agree. I love Ron's style. Plus, none of the Stones are in their prime in this video (ronnie, like Mick n Keith, were much better in their prime.
I was going home drunk when they were selling tix for this outside the PR at 6am and there were 12 people in line. 12 goddamned people. I, and my brother, have never forgiven myself for not clueing in and getting those tickets. One of my biggest regrets ever!
Well, at least the sax player had his $hit somewhat together.
Actually, for me, the second half of the studio version of this song is way overrated. and the first half of the song is underrated. I really like the intro/guitar work, it has such a nice snarl to it. The Mick Taylor solo at the end is OK, but I'd much rather listen to his solo on Dead Flowers, to be honest with you.
The issue I have with the original mix is this: It's a bit raw-sounding - too-raw-sounding for my tastes, and me being an audiophile, that rough-edged sound can be a little distracting. Many people love it. I'd probably be fine with it if they took a little bit of that edgy-ness off of Mick's vocals (which it seems they did with the recent remaster. I have pristine, pro-level vinyl-rips of the original UK and US LP's, but I think I prefer the mid '90's Bob Ludwig remaster. I'm finicky about it.
I bought the remastered exile recently, then threw it out and busted out my old copy with the original mix instead. I just cannot stop listening to that album. My GF gets pissed, I play it all the time. There is just something magical about that album that very few groups have captured since. Maybe Slash found a bit of that magic on Appetite for Destruction (largely Stones/Zeppelin influenced), but its just got that "something" that defies explanation and goes beyond the songs themselves.
Be nice to Woody..he has his talents that are clear and massive...This particular song is a Mick Taylor riff or a Keith riff that Taylor played well...and loud...If Woody would just paly it louder and with a LEs Paul or NOT A STRAT or maybe a "fat strat" in that mode...it would sound like the record...everyone wants this to sound like a Jimmy Miller mix...that's not an easy thing to do...HE was a great at what he did.
I dunno if you know...but it is actually Keith playing the solo. And the solos I might add...and if not happy with his solos,,,listen to Rolling Stones Bridges to Babylon and songs like Saint of Me or Anybody seen my Baby
NICE...love the bluesy sound of this tune, which sadly they've never played in concerts I've attended. The background singers, sax & other horns, and yes even Woody all sound pretty sweet to my ears. Agree with other commenters though that NO one can out-guitar Taylor & his Les paul on this song. Will add that Mick looks very buff for a 59 y.o. here -- I can only hope to be in that kinda shape @ that age :=)
If the Stones must insist on touring then they should play the world's small clubs like this, charge everyone no more than $30/£20. Okay, they'd make a loss but as a gesture and a 'Thank you' to the people who have funded their lifestyles for the past 200 years it would be nice. Also their music is better suited to this size of venue. Unfortunately the thought of a financial loss scares the shit out of Mick Jagger.
@rm009z0858 You do, I would hope, realize that they have far more $ than they can ever spend and could've retired MANY years ago, which means we wouldn't have the pleasure of hearing their great sound /tunes anymore to counteract a shyt seaful of Jonas Bros., Justin Beibers, and Miley Cyruses? Just sayin...
However your point is taken that their tix prices these days are ABSURD. I WOULD however gladly pay $75-200 to see them in a small club and not a football stadium with bad acoustics...
@Sharky165 You make a good point. They are one of the best antidotes to Miley, Jonas etc. and live they still deliver but I think a band with such an important legacy and were once a genuine threat to the British establishment, and set the template for rebellious rocknroll have been creatively dead since the late 70's and have sadaly become a parody of themselves.
As you say, they could've retired many times and don't need the bucks so why continue at absurd prices? It can only be greed.
@rm009z0858 "sadly become a parody of themselves." Sadly, I agree with you. This rehearsal really proves how BADLY they needed to rehearse (ironic). They never got the intro right, Keef messes up the breaks, Charlie is a bit off too, but Mick sings quite good. They are old, no one denies that, but they should NOT take their show for granted. It's good they surround themselves with "young" musicians, and they should be energized by them. This sounds worse than a cover band. :( Kinda hurts.
@mferrusca I totally agree. I've just Keef's autobiography in which he compares the Stones to the old original Chicago blues guys who played till they dropped. This is a romantic notion for Keith and he's entitled to it but I'd rather see them stop than become a comedy act. All the best to you sir!
@rm009z0858 How could you call this comedy? Madonna is comedy !!! Britney's' crotch shots are comedy..Shaved comedy..like Lennon's Shaved Fish record..maybe he was onto something....HA! These cats will play till they drop...they got nothin' else...like this that is...Heroin cant' touch this adrenalin.
@mferrusca The best part about being the writer of one of the most recognized guitar riffs in history is that you don't have to play it the same way twice if you don't want to. The only "young" musician that they play with regularly is Daryl the bass player. Bobby Keys (on the vid) still plays sax with them...he's the same age as Richards and been with them since Let it Bleed in 1969. The backup singers have been the same since at least the Steel Wheels tour...who are you referring to then?
@cgraber I was thinking about Daryl and Lisa, to be specific. I totally agree on the riff argument of yours. That would be boring as hell and folks like Santana, Gary Moore, SRV would have never as good or interesting if they only repeated themselves.
@mferrusca It's just a rehearsal holy shit! Did any of you see them on the Licks tour? Some of their best shows ever and I've seen them over 30 times in concert.
@keef186 You got a point, I got carried away generalizing. Specially since I've been rediscovering the Exile album and was on that frameset of musicianship. Let's not forget the context of this video: rehearsal.
@mferrusca I suppose I got carried away myself I know they've may not sound as great as they did back in the Exile era with Taylor but I truly believe that on these past few tours, a good majority of the shows could stand up to any that they did back in '72-'73 which is what most people consider the Stones to be at their peak. I say they're at their peak now.
@Sharky165 Don't get me wrong, The Stones were my life growing up, I have the tattoo, over 50 of their LPs and have seen them here in Scotland twice but it just saddens me to see them become a corporation. The music has been 2nd rate and predictable for years. Jagger simply wouldn't know how to write a song like Sympathy For The Devil now but it is amusing to see just old they can get.
I've seen so many stones shows since 1981 and hope there will be more. But I wish i could be able to be in the room when they're rehearsing and just messing around. The best would be the 1972 rehearsals.
This is one song they rarely did live if ever...too bad cos this is my favourite...just the sound of Bobby Keyes' sax still sends shivers up my back. And you're right about Mick Taylor's original guitar on this...sorry Ronnieboy, MT OWNS!
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I think this is great! And you have to cut them a little slack since it's just a rehearsal. I've seen them 11 times since Steel Wheels. Long live the Stones!
Pathetic. No wonder they stopped short of the original long solo. And Mick Taylor was playing a Gibson ES-345, not the Strat Ron Wood is playing. For the album, the solo happened as a spontaneous jam in the studio. Everyone was going to stop playing, but Mick Taylor said he kept going because he had found the groove. No groove here.
Love the Stones! Thanks for this one, from 2002-(?) The Boys...ehemm..Men...Will ALWAYS ROCK!!! Lovely, steely, Rock Gods; The most Beautiful, Glimmering, Dolls!!!! Shine on and on and on....
Woodie does okay on a solo that is both historic and very tough to emulate without "copying" note for note.......he does pretty well actually, keeping the feel of the solo.....Mick Taylor really played some beautiful solos, lyrical, flowing.....Woodie feels the music no doubt
what is it with the Wood v Taylor debate? Wood is a thoroughbred Stone - get on with it & support the guy - they didn't hire him just because he's good at parties.Watch Stones play Beast of Burden at Fort Worth in1978 on youtube to see a briliant band Wood et al.
@45spindle Except the Stones aren't about solos -- they're about riffs, and Keith is the riffmaster, and Ronnie blends better with that. I love Mick Taylor and think those were prime Stones years, but not simply because of his dazzling solos, but the songs they were built around, and those songs were written by Mick and Keith for the most part. Bottom line -- appreciate what the Stones are for what they are, not what aren't. If you are a true Stones fan, you will know exactly what I mean.
Thanks a lot for posting this. One of my very favourite Stones songs. And this video gives one a chance to see something one wouldn't have got a chance to see.
Kick ass! This is a great version. Stones sound great in small clubs because they don't have a huge brass section. What a great jam band they are. Great song to improvise to.
The Stones so much better raw and without a 50 peice horn section backing them up. I've seen em 6 times and just wish they'd strip back down to a hard rock band. Long live the Stones!
Look at the liner notes of Squeezing Out Sparks. Jack Nietzsh, who played with the Stone early on, including on Satisfaction, was criticizing bands that "overplay," and said that the Stones don't play with ego, "they just play the music." I always thought that was a great quote and it's really accurate, if you think about it. Keith is ALWAYS a tasteful player. No 10 minute solos.
I can't believe the criticism. It's a rehearsal!! Brilliant stuff I reckon.

Wood is a thoroughbred Stone - get on with it & support the guy - they didn't hire him just because he's good at parties.Watch Stones play Beast of Burden at Fort Worth in1978 on youtube to see a briliant band Wood et al.

poor woody just can't play like MT. good try but very short of the mark

Nice try on the guitar solo Woody.
Mick Taylor owns this piece of musical history!

thats so true, Taylor is just the master of a huge piece of Stones history that Ron can't revive!
jammerstud99 2 years ago 18
oh so true
tmaarud 2 years ago
@45spindle Except the Stones aren't about solos -- they're about riffs, and Keith is the riffmaster, and Ronnie blends better with that. I love Mick Taylor and think those were prime Stones years, but not simply because of his dazzling solos, but the songs they were built around, and those songs were written by Mick and Keith for the most part. Bottom line -- appreciate what the Stones are for what they are, not what aren't. If you are a true Stones fan, you will know exactly what I mean.

Long live the Stones!

this is fantastic. note that there is a perfect chemistry between the stones and without ego.
soundshunter 2 years ago 3
Look at the liner notes of Squeezing Out Sparks. Jack Nietzsh, who played with the Stone early on, including on Satisfaction, was criticizing bands that "overplay," and said that the Stones don't play with ego, "they just play the music." I always thought that was a great quote and it's really accurate, if you think about it. Keith is ALWAYS a tasteful player. No 10 minute solos.
