It's my opinion that this record transcends the 'novelty' category. It's been one of my fave r'nb singles since the summer it came out. BTW, The New York Dolls covered the Cadets' cover version and both the latter two groups get some of the lyrics wrong.

I liked the Cadets version a lot better. I didn't know that they had covered this song until now. But this version isn't bad

The Cadets may have turned it into a "kiddie record" but they had the bigger hit version of the song by two chart positions in 1956.
