I remember this race and had $10 on BLU at long odds. He was stiffed! Was out at Living Legends last weekend and BLU is still kicking on 26 years old by my count, a true champion of Oz racing
I was happy to see Super win but really felt for Better Loosen Up, who in my opinion, should have won the race after coming back from a suspensory ligament injury, an injury that finishes most horses. That would have put the exclamation mark on what was a wonderful career.
Such a great field, doubt we'll ever see one as good.
Can only imagine what it would've been like without the fall. It left me shattered to see my old fav Sydeston getting taken out when he seemed to be making a move. I know he was not in his best form that season but still, 2nd in 1990, 3rd in 1991, he had proven to be a serious contender.
Just glad that Super beat out Lets Elope, would have hated it if that mare had won, especially after all the interference she caused.
I had 20 bux on Naturalism and 5 on Super at 25/1 and what a ride. Freedman was all class in the interview being more concerned with Naturalism than winning the plate. Had a great carnival that year backed mannerism in the Caulfield cheers Shane Dye
Once Naturalism fell, Better Loosen Up was the unlucky runner. Can you believe bookies were offering 50/1 for BLU prior to the jump. This track and race is unique and unfortunately there's talk that the track we see now won't be around much longer! What a shame, considering the WS Cox Plate is the Heavyweight Championship of Australian racing. There will never be a better field than the 1992 Cox Plate!
The Great Super! Best racehorse ever. We loved him and he gave us many huge thrills. Just the way he won coming from last was amazing. And versatile; don't forget he ran second and fourth in the Melbourne Cup! Won 20k on him when he carried the grandstand to win the Canberra Cup. Best ride ever though goes to pumpa on Rough Habit in the Doomben Cup.
@Dicko28 congrats on your 20k win which was alot of money back then. You must have had a massive bet on him in the Canberra Cup as he started long odds on that day from memory
Better Loosen Up would have won this with a clear run. Had his jockey kept him wide instead of going inside he would have won his 2nd Cox Plate. Don't blame the jockey; these guys have to make split-second decisions. On this occasion, he made the wrong one.
James, I see where you're coming from and Marshall said he was devastated about what happened. But the option he took wasnt a bad one from him, he would have won if Lets Elope didnt lay on him and he wasnt to know that. Hindsight is always a good thing, its possible had he came to the outside that Super could have chopped him off too. He saw a gap and took it, the result had nothing to do with his ride. Its just one of those things that happen where circumstances beat them, not the decision.
@jamessquire1 You can see on the tape that Simon Marshall, on Better Loosen Up, tries to take a run between Super Impose and Let's Elope at the top of the straight, but Greg Hall, on Super Impose, makes sure it doesn't happen. Interviewed about the race, Greg Hall made the comment that there was no way known he was going to let Better Loosen Up take the run. It was genius on the part of Hall, and Marshall had no choice but to switch back to the inside of Let's Elope to make his run.
I was there that day with my daughter. When naturalism fell the cry from the crowd was like a communal roar of pain. When My daughter told me she had backed super impose at 20/1 I said that no eight year old had won this race but then he was a champion. I got that right .
it was greg hall and he tells a very funny story about how many times (45 times) he hit super impose. apparently the night before the race one of the owners of super impose rang him and said have him up near the lead and don't hit him with the whip. luckily greg did the exact opposite. great ride!
Rough Habit was just about to begin his sweeping run round the field when the horses fell in front of him. If they didnt I maintain that he would have won it. People remember Naturalism being taken out but forget that Roughie was almost equal favourite and just as big a chance to win.
Rough Habit had his chance a few years later and didn't take it. Loomed up to go past Solvit after having the softest of soft runs but couldn't do it. To say that he would have circled that field after the slow speed is ludicrous. There's no way he could have got past Super or Lets Elope, as good a horse as he was, he was suspect over 2040 metres.
best field there will ever be. first race meeting i ever went to as a tacker and had my two bob on my ol' fav let's elope, thought i was robbed to this day until i saw that she nearly put better loosen up on the harness track. this race is the reason why i am a tragic to this day
Funny day that one, myself and half dozen mates were huge fans of Super... all at the TAB, before the race the other clowns all backed Naturalism, i was the only one who proudly stood by the champ, i couldn't believe the 20 to 1 price !! Even though my mates had no balls to back Super, i had to shout.... where's the justice in that??
"Was without doubt, the best race field ever assembled. Just listening to the call and every horse is just amazing."
Agreed the best field ever...i was on better loosen up...ran forth and prob would of won but got crunched in the last 50, hes next to super when he starts his run.
This field takes me back to my childhood. These are the horses I grew up watching on Channel 9 on a Saturday afternoon. Easily the best field ever assembled in this country.
Like I said, the only one who didnt cause any trouble and didnt get invovled in any trouble won the race. And I think there was probably 10 hard luck stories just like Lets Elopes, in the race but thats racing. It was a shame a fall and this interference marred what was collectively one of the greatest if not the greatest field to compete here.
Thats rediculous . . Lets elope sat three deep the whole race and then gets relegated to 5th , dont get me wrong im a huge fan of Better Loosen Up but i think the mare was a little hard done by
She did spear in alot over the last 100mts and Prince Salieri was squeezed out too because of it. But it was a bad choice to take Better Loosen Up to the inside of Lets Elope, if he had of gone to her outside he might won.
But the only horse who didnt get involved with any of the trouble was a worthy winner
I was there that day with my mum, was on Palace Reign, i was very young. What a field, so much class, not one dud horse amongst them.... Star studded to rival the 2002 cox plate
A top quality field, there combined group ones would have out ranked any other field in history. I think at the time Super, Better Loosen Up, Lets Elope and Rough Habit were the top 4 in prizemoney winners, add to that the Guinea's winner and last season Golden Slipper winner, Caulfield Cup winner, not bad at all.
Oh and a previous Caulfield Cup winner, Epsom winner, soon to be Oaks winner a prolific wfa performer who was the unluckiest galloper of his time and two excellent 3yrs. Oh yeah and Naturalism, the Derby winner from last yr and undefeated in the lead up, he went on to run a gallant 2nd in Japan Cup the same yr. Class field
Thank you. Super Impose was my favorite racehorse of all time. If you have any more, especially the 4 he won over the randwick mile I would love to see them again. That video gave me goosebumps.
Dont have his mile wins, wish I did tho! He was a grand campaigner, he raced against some true champions in his time. He could be enigmatic at times, but when he let go he really hit the line hard. Deserving winner of this race and against arguably the best field to race here, just sad to see the fall marr it all.

With a better ride, Let's Elope would have won easily. Jockey had it too wide for too long...

Watch the run of Coronation Day. Now there is a horse that never got a crack at them.

Did Rough Habit beat any of these horses in big races ? I thought he was quite dominant for a few years in Oz.Perhaps in Queensland more so.
brabham69 3 years ago
Rough Habit was at his best over the shorter distances ie. 1500-1600 metres. Still a champion of the turf.
Carrots44 3 years ago

So I counted (was it Beadman?) 44 strokes of the whip on Super Impose from before the turn to three strides past the winning post.

what a call by Bryan Martin.2nd to his Japan Cup of Better loosen up
tashaa1810 4 years ago
the greatest field assembled for the greatest ever cox plate ran to date.
despite the fall, this race was always going to be decided in the last 200m.
pity Super always carried extreme weight in the melbourne cups tho,,would have been nice to see a Great champion like him come through once.
Raven7Payne 4 years ago
Yes a good field ...... pity the best horse in Australasia at the time ...... Veandercross.... was not in the race though.

I had $50 on Palace Reign. Was going to win too until Naturalism tripped him up.

Yeah totally agree but she did sit three wide for almost the whole race whilst super impose got the got a sit with cover.
I think if Lets Elope got the run super impose got she would of won by a few lengths.
She only ducked in to the rails in the last 100m because she had nothing left and couldnt find.
I dont really think there was a run there for Better loosen up either but in saying that he was also unlucky not to win the race.
Then again so were many of them.
