  • you should do a tutorial :)

  • fine composition, full of sound, great playing

  • That's some fine music. Really eased my soul this morning. Thank you for that.

  • Just so goood! Have you made a CD yet? I would really like to buy it. This one is my favourite, I also like the "time lost" song.

  • THAT WAS AWESOME MAN!!!

  • What is the tuning in this song?

  • Why do people listen pop or rock leaving this awesome music unnoticed???????

  • I really like your music, I would like to hear your other originals, you have this one and the one your singing, and the one you used to play on guitar. It would be way cool to hear the rest of them. You also make it look so effortless. It's just way cool.

  • Very very beautiful tune!

    Greetings from Ukraine!

  • Okay I love this(:

My mother just started letting me play her mountain dulcimer,

and I don't have a clue where to start.

Can you give me hints?? Clues?? Anything, would be much appreciated thanks so much for the beautiful music(:

  • great song! love it

  • very good :)

  • I must say that was amazing and it left me bereft of words the while time I watched and listend to you play. I do not own a "Dulcimer" Although I do have a Norwegian Langeleik and I must if you do instructional videos on your celtic styles?

  • This is truly amazing music - thank you

  • Beautiful! :)

  • The most notable thing about your playing is your enjoyment, and how you pass that on to your listeners. Outstanding! Also, thanks for reminding me that I need to enjoy my music to pass it on, not just to entertain. :)

  • Good job. It has nice dramatic interludes. I'm impressed that its all plectrum. My instincts would have been to fingerpick the whole piece. I have something similar in an open tuning on guitar and I've changed the title a lot. I intended it to be for my first love but she was a wrong 'un so I have this tune that I play for nobody.

"Theme for Nobody", that seems the right title now.

Thanks for the inspiration and great playing.

    Orrabest from Scotland.

  • You sure do make it look smooth. A sharp looking instrument and nice technique. Nice smooth flow and bouncy. Great for a 5 star.

  • Very nice music. I really enjoyed it!

  • i love the sound of the dulcimer. i just have to learn to play mine.

  • FIve stars! One of my favorites.

  • The sound of this thing is great. The dulcimer is one of four instruments that Loreena McKennit can play. The other three are harp, keyboard and accordion.

  • hu? Does it have 6 strings here? Doesn't a Dulcimer usually have 4 strings?

  • Favorited!

  • Thanks for posting such a great piece.

  • I really enjoyed your playing!!! Thanks!!!!

  • Thanks for posting- sounds great!! Really enjoy hearing pieces like this a little more sedate to the usual faster pick style.

  • Wow.

    This is wonderful!

So dreamy and poignant and compelling.

    Thanks for posting it!

    5 stars

    Shas

  • That was outstanding. I like you tune......Perry

  • you HOPE we like it ??

WOW !!! It is wonderful... loved the way

you put all the sounds together. Uniquely interesting!

    thanks!

  • puah, great , great , great virtuose. please the next song.

  • 1) Who made this dulcimer and when?

    2) Is it made of cherry and maple? I really enjoy its timbre!

  • verry verry amazing

  • Joni Mitchell plays one of these in "Carey" and "Case of You". It has a great sound.

  • Beatiful tones...fantastic!

  • Brilliant!

  • heh simply amazing

  • wow it plays like a guitar/piano rolled into one, never seen one of these before. Very cool.

  • Hey is this dude in Led Zeppelin? He's like waaay owld skewl!

  • the dulcimer as an instrument doesn't get enough credit, its people like this man who are changing that.

  • Very nice, indeed! I enjoyed that a great deal. Can't wait to see the rest of what you've done. Keep up the good work. BTW, are you going to be putting out a CD? I think you should. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Great song. Thanks for sharing.

I love playing my mountain dulcimer!

  • Love it! I am looking for a dulcimer, if you have advice. I would like it to accompany hymns, ballads, carols, lullabies ...

    Thanks!

  • thats amazing, might have to play on a dulcimer some time!! thanks!

  • Well done.

  • Wow, this is amazing. I would love to learn how to play the dulcimer. Thank you for the inspiration!

  • wow.....could words express that? holy shit i play a lo of instrments andbecause of that song i am adding this 1 to the list

  • This is lovely. your technique is impeccable.

  • What key is this played in? LB

  • Thanks! Love the crosspicking.

  • my favourite instrument.

  • Whoa! This has made me dig out my dulcimer, re-string it and make it sing! :D

    thanks alot!

  • This is simply amazing! Beautifully played. Did you write the music yourself?

  • Very nice! Do you play all the instruments hanging up on and near your wall?

  • Ohh! Very cool!

  • Man the 6 string dulcimer is a whole different beast that the 3 or 4 string. You have made me want to look into the 6 string,,, how steep is the learning curve from the 4 string?

  • That was awesome! Tanks for the post.

  • love this!

i'm thinking about taking up the dulcimer and you have truly inspired me

    cheers from the uk

  • Beautiful

  • Thank you so much

    Jack

    Good to meet you!

    Debby

  • Civicktuner,

Thank you so much for stopping by to visit.

    Jack

  • is it possible to play this on a 4 string teardrop dulcimer?

  • Hey Jigglman,

Yes it is possible to play this on four stringed dulcimer.

    Thanks

    Jack

  • simple, beautiful. that's all good music needs to be! loved it.

  • Thank you for a great comment.

    Take Care

    Jack

  • This is wonderful. I play a three stringed guitar, tuned DAD (see my "Don't Cry Jane" vidoes). I might have to give this instrument a try.

  • I did check out your videos. I had no Idea that a guitar could sound so good with only three strings.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • Pretty good.

One of my heroes (Dave Cousins) plays a smaller string dulcimer andit soudns great. I've never laid hands on something like that although I wouldn't mind learning it, and maybe a sitar just so I can knock out something a bit different.

I think I might have a problem at first with playing the string dulcimer like a horizontal banjo when it is more like an open tuning on a guitar with mixed rhythmn and lead.

Get an electric one out and do some Hendrix.

  • You have some great Ideas. I have considered building an electric and doing some old rock. I think it would sound great on a dulcimer.

Thank you for your thoughts and your time.

    Jack

  • wow! im learning it soon , the song is beautiful it has the feeling of nick drake

  • Wow!! What a complement. Thanks you so much.

    Jack

  • ur awesome!

  • I love the sound of the Dulcimer. I am seriously considering learning it. Your style and beat(which is amazing) is exactly the type I want to play. I am uninterested in bluegrass type music, could you point me in the way of any good information for beginners with your style of Folk and any recommendations for types of Dulcimer for hiking and camping trips(compact)? Thank you so much for sharing that song.

  • Hey Aether, I have sent you a personal message with the information you requested. Thank you so much for the kind words. You are very welcome.

    Take Care

    jack

  • hope you dont mind but may I have that information as well? thanks

  • Lezardvaleth,

I would be happy to send you the information.

    Thanks for stopping by

    Jack

  • my teacher plays this and i had never heard of it nor did i honestly think it would sounds nice...but i would have to say it's very beautiful! Thank you for showing and sharing

  • You are very welcome. Thank you for watching.

    Jack

  • Wow! That's some great playing. I really like this song. Thanks for sharing it with everyone.

  • Hey JK,

Thank you very much. You are welcome.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • Jack,

Your Celtic song is wonderful! A beautiful blend of picking, strumming, fingering, and capo work. Very inspirational. I have two dulcimers (a 4 and 6) bought in the early 80's, but seldom played, so have a small repertoire. Am changing the situation, and have added a couple hymens during the past couple weeks, as well as going back to the study books to learn new material. Would like to learn some Celtic tunes as well. Do you have any recommendations for a beginner?

    Thank You!

    Cheers!

    Jace

  • Hey Jace,

What a great comment. Yes, I would recommend Helen Jonson's books. If you do a search for "Helen Johnson dulcimer" although her music is not the same, her style of playing is very similar. She has beginning and intermediate. I used her intermediate books and added my own twist to it. That should get you started.

Thank you very much for your time and interest.

    Jack

  • Thanks for demonstrating that beautiful instrument!!! I have always been fascinated with hammered and mountain dulcimers. Have you ever heard of anyone playing either type of dulcimer with bluegrass music?

  • Hello Carolina,

Yes!! With in the dulcimer community the majority of people play old time music and bluegrass music on both types of dulcimers. There are many resources for learning to play bluegrass music on the dulcimer. You are very welcome and thank you for your interest.

    Jack

  • That was beautiful ! - I'd love to play some stringed instrument but it seems to me very hard...

  • Hey Herriet, Thank you so much. One of the reasons I try so hard to promote the dulcimer is that I believe it is the easiest instrument to learn to play. I spent years struggling with other instruments. When I found the dulcimer I could not believe how easy it was to learn. I was also saddened (in all those years) that I had never heard of it before.

    Thank you Again

    Jack

  • I don't know which goes together better....you and your dulcimers, or dulcimers and Celtic style music. Where can I get a CD of your music? ;)

  • Hey Dan,

Thank you so much! What a great comment!! There is no CD but I have dreams of someday making one.

    Thanks Again

    jack

  • Men you almost make me discover this instrument ! It's not really used here in France ! plus you built your own as it seems. Great work ! And nice tune you played on it !

    Thanks !

  • Hey Sock, Thanks for stopping by and the great comments. You are very welcome. I enjoyed visiting your channel too.

    Jack

  • I was considering getting a mountain dulcimer. I was looking for a small stringed instrument that would be easy to take with me places. From hearing the beautiful sounds you made I am convinced to stick with my acoustic guitar, fingerstyle. Thanks!

  • Hey Kracker monkey,

Thanks for stopping by. A dulcimer is much easier to carry around. Guitar style picking works well on a dulcimer. Thanks Again for stopping by.

    Take Care

    Jack

  • im 20 i got a mountain dulcimer a few years back, and im not to good. lol do you know of any good books to help me out? this sounds amazing. thanks.

    ~Victoria

  • Hey Victoria, I am so happy that yo0u have a dulcimer. Yes I can recommend some one for you to get books from. Helen Johnson sells excelent books over the internet. Google Helen Johnson Dulcimer.

Thank You so much for stopping by.

    Jack

  • This is a beautiful instrument, and played so well, with such deep and loving attention. I was considering buying a synthesiser, but after hearing this I was stopped in my tracks. Would you recommend a six string version for a beginner or a four? (played very basic guitar for some years) Thank you from 'downunder' (Australia)

  • Hey Red, Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. If you want a dulcimer that sounds louder and more like a guitar a six string is good. You can remove strings from a six string. (Make it a 4 string) If you want a more tradition sounding dulcimer then four strings would be better. Four string dulcimers are generally less expensive. I appreciate you stopping by to visit. I would be happy to provide you with more info.

    Thanks Again.

    Jack

  • That was wonderful and beatifully played. Made me close my eyes and listen. Thanks and hope to see more. Now I can put a face to the name. Thanks for your comments on mine also. Tish Westman

  • Hey Tish, What a great comment. You are very welcome. Thank you so much for stopping by for a visit.

  • Very pretty piece of music! I like how the dulcimer works for Celtic music, instead of just the American songs. I'm not very good on my sulcimer yet, especially not with chords, but I hope to learn more...

Was your dulcimer custom-made? The sound holes are unique, and I also noticed that it's a 6-string, which I haven't seen that much.

  • Hey Caroline,

Thank you for the great comment. Yes it is custom built. I build these dulcimers. You are observant, it is a six string. I prefer the sound of a six string. Thank you so much for stopping by to visit.

    Take Care

    Jack

  • that was really very nice, do you sell your pieces for other players?

  • Thank you so much for watching and asking. I have sent you a private message.

  • Hey Sahmbedh,

Thank you for a great comment. I saw that you had discovered you heritage. My great grand father was a full blooded Irishman. His last name was Shandrew and they tell me he had fiery red hair, as I did, when if was a child. Now it's mostly Grey. hehe:) :)

Your videos have given me joy also. You two just look great together. Thank you so much for the great comment. You are very welcome. I look forward to your next video. I intend to post many more of these.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • Is this a hard instrument to pick up? I play guitar and I'm getting bored with it. I was looking to pick something new up something unique. I also looked a few hammered vids.

    Also nice work sounds great..

  • Hey Phil, Thanks for asking. No it's not hard to pick up. I think it is one of the easiest stringed instruments to play. I hope you so get one.

    Thanks

    Jack

  • That sir, was hauntingly exquisite! You've inspired me to go beyond old hymns although I don't think I could ever achieve this! By the way, how is your dulcimer tuned? loved it!

  • Hey Red,

Thank you so much for such a nice comment. I hope you do continue. I am tuned dd aa dd. This is a six string. If you are using a four string it would be dd a d. Thanks Again

    Jack

  • This is wonderful playing. Quite a beautiful, haunting tune. really "feels" celtic.

    I absolutely love it.

Any other recordings of you playing this piece anywhere?

  • Hey Piper,

Thanks you so much for the great comment. No there aren't any other recordings of this yet but it is coming.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • that's great stuff, Jack!

  • Hey Roafo,

Thanks for all of the great comments.

    Jack

  • Wonderful! You truly do this great instrument proud.

  • Hey Nyland, Thank you so much for the great comment. The dulcimer is capable of much more than I am able to do. My desire is to just show the potential. I do appreciate your kind words.

    Thanks Again.

    Jack

  • That was really great Jack! You are a true minstrel and a great pleasure to listen too. thanks for sharing your wonderful music.

  • Hey Minstral,

Thank you very much for the kind comment. You are very welcome.

    Jack

  • Recently I've had an intense fascination with zither family instruments. I play the piano and violin but videos have inspired me to seriously look into learning the mountain dulcimer. Mostly I'm glad that you seem so encouraging and enthusiastic of people's interest, instead of... I don't know, snobby or something. :) Now some questions! How long have you been playing? And also, what would you say the price range is? (I'm a poor university student!)

    Thanks.

  • Hey Spittle,

I am glad you are interested in the mountain dulcimer. Thank you for the kind words. I really want folks to see the capabilities of the dulcimer. Its a great instrument. Questions, I have been playing for two 1/2 years. Price range,Walmart=69.00 up to hand carved custom thousands. My dulcimers 130.00 to 200.00 manufactured. 350.00 basic hand made. There are many builders and price ranges. Thank you for your interest and stopping by. I hope this helps.

    Jack

  • very nice.

  • Hey Nikkole,

Thank you for commenting. I checked out your channel. You have taken on a noble cause. Humane treatment of horses. Good Luck.

    Thanks

    Jack

  • thanks..and again you are a very good dulcimer player.

  • Ooooh, VERY nice tune! Thanks for uploading this one ... I love it! :+)

  • Hey Ciel,

Thanks for the positive comment. You are very welcome. I am delighted that you like it.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • I really like the bridge portion of the song. A nice composition.

I've always been impressed to see folks use their thumb to fret -- gives you a large range across the fret board.

    Nice job, Jack.

  • Thank you buck. I take that as a real complement coming from a player with your skill.

    Thanks Again,

    Jack

  • Hey Deb, You are welcome. I try to create music that is relaxing. Music (for me) is an escape from the fast paced activities of daily life. It is a joy to hear you express similar feelings.

    Thanks for the kind words.

    Jack

  • That's an amazingly nice sound, thanks for showing!

  • You're Welcome! Thanks for stopping by. I also want to tell you I appreciate the work that you are doing to help find an alternative energy source.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • I heard a mountain dulcimer at a festival me and my mom went to and she said she learned by ear she even helped me play mary had a little lamb. Ever since I've been hooked theres only one thing worrying me how hard are they to play I can't read a note of sheet music.

  • I'm Happy you and your mom were at a dulcimer festival. Your Mom is right it is pretty easy to learn to play the dulcimer by ear. You also do not have to be able to read music to play the dulcimer. The tablature is written so that you can use a simple numbering system to learn to play. That is one of the great things about a dulcimer. Almost anyone can play a song or two in minutes after the numbering system is explained to them. Thanks for stopping by. Thanks Again

    Jack

  • love it,looks like fun going out tomorrow to see if I can find one around louisiana!! your great mr. 20 stars

  • Joelle,

Thanks you. :) :) I do have a desire to make all of that happen. Some day I will find a way to "get er done" :)

    Thanks Again,

    Jack

  • That's excellent, man! Keep those originals coming.

  • Bing,

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the positive Comment. :) :) I really enjoyed your rainbow vid.

    Thanks Again. Jack :) :)

  • Awsome man, you got great cross picking going on during the song!

  • MDMstudio,

Thank you for the positive comment. I am trying to develop dulcimer music that is more modern. I would like to see more young people involved with this instrument. You have great skill for your age.

    Thanks again for stopping by,

    Jack :) :) :)

  • Yea, it would be great if more people my age stated playing. And I have gotten a few people interested (mainly with celtic stuff.) But most of the people are not interested in buying a dulcimer. Thanks for the compliments.

  • MDMstudio, You are welcome. :) :) Keep up the great work.

    Jack :) :)

  • Jack, that was good stuff! I could sit and listen to you all day. I especially admire the subtle flourishes and licks you employ. It really adds a lot to the tune and inspires me. When you gonna cut that CD?

  • Hey Kbrigby,

Thanks you so much for the positive comment. Every time I hear the word inspired, I feel so honored by that. Especially when it come from a very good player. I am still trying to figure out how to produce a cd. Thank you again :) :)

    Jack

  • Deborah,

Wow!! What an awesome Comment. Thank you so very Much. :) :)

    Thanks Again. :) :)

    Jack

  • Glad you finally got an original on. Was Great
