@jafetrese one of the best thing that you can do to yourself to learn Kanji/Hanzi is to get an iPod/iPhone. The character input is fantastic!!!!!!! I wish it was the same for my android phone :( I am going to get an iPad just with that purpose
It's actually kind of confusing for me when you flip the board and you have 東ほく for the On reading, I understand that you better not use the full kanji for 東北 (touhoku), but I can't help reading 東ほく as "higashihoku" ^-^
1:42 OH MY GOD. I remembered how in the other video you said the box was a sun, and I already knew that the one in front of it looked like a tree! Then when you said it I was like, "HOLY CRAP, I WAS RIGHT." (And yeah, I am new to learning Japanese so it probably isn't a big deal after all. :P)
Hi, When you use the "on" relationship for chinese, are you showing us chinese also in this lesson, and is there a relationship between the chinese and japanese language in writing and meaning of Kanji symbles? During those I get a bit confused. Another tutorial depicted the tree Kanji symble as meaning big. Do the Kanji symbles have multiple meanings depending on their usage with other Kanji symbles?
@TheLivingDeadOne on readings are not the Chinese readings but they are often similar, as they were derived from the Chinese readings long ago (just as the written kanji were borrowed from Chinese as well). As for the other tutorial saying that the tree kanji meant big, you're probably confusing 木 (tree) with 大 (big). They are separate kanji that differ slightly.
This is just a great explanation of kanji. I study japonese at university and can tell you that this is a good video to memorize kanji even for me!!I wll keep watching it! thank you!
is it gramatically correct to write everything in hiragana? Will you still be understood or is it incorrect to spell a word using kanji with hiragana?
@psynema It is not incorrect, but when sentences are written using only hiragana, it can become hard to read (like telling where words start and end), so it is better to use kanji when possible. But if you are still a beginner and don't know kanji yet, it is okay :)
@japanesepod101 I think that manga is a great way to learn Japanese. I am actually trying to find some Manga done for little kids - heck even babies - but I cannot find any here in the US in Japanese :( All I find are in English already.
wow this is really helpful and im thinking of getting a account on japanesepod101 =) Im 16 and I want to go to japan someday when im 19 or 20 so this is useful.Arigato hiroko-san
I heard that you need to know at least about 2000 Kanji's to read a newspaper which is a lot, but on top of that every(?) Kanji has multiple readings... I don't know how you will ever memorize alle the Kanjis and it's readings...

Kanji is easier to learn than Hiragana for people who speak and write chinese like me, since the stroke order is the same :)
