I cannot believe I felt the need to say all of this but:
Our chairman (chairperson) is a woman because she fits the role, regardless of gender and is an amazing actor.
The girl that sings is not Deputy, it is Durdles. If you feel the need to trash someone's performance, at least know about what it is your trying to trash.
The chorus is so big because the school doesn't cut, rather has a large ensemble. There's plenty of time for cutting in the professional world. It's high school, lighten up.
I have no problem with the ensemble. The problem is that it doesn't make sense for a girl to play the chairman. First off, the lewdness of the jokes would not be said by a woman in the Victorian era. Second, women would not have been placed in charge of a theater at the time. Third, The female voice throws off the balance and harmony of the music. Fourth, to be honest she's not quite that good of an actor and a sub-par singer.
Overanalyzing. It's high school theatre. Suspend some disbelief. Who cares? How does a female voice throw of balance and harmony if she singing the exact same notes? If you mean balance of male and female voice then fine, but since she sings the exact same part as the chairman, the harmonies are the same. Also, the chairman isn't meant to sing the song but "act" it, which is why she's half-singing. And as for acting talent, you've seen spoken interludes in the middle of a song, not actual scenes
You know, there was a day when all the female parts were played by men because it was thought that women weren't talented enough... I think this shows we've come full circle on this... now it's the males in a lot of high schools that aren't as talented... better a girl who can handle the acting and singing than a guy who can't.
