It looks really weird, but I kinda like it. It does certainly look like something you get as WiiWare. (WiiWare needs some more good shmups and the like)
I hope to eventually try to re-make this game, or make a sequel or whatever: I've had people say some really nice things about it, even though they never played it (and probably BECAUSE they never played it).
It might look interesting, but the game play didn't quite work out (mostly the controls/physics were awful). Hopefully now that I have more experience under my belt, I can be more successful next time.
As many others note, this looks really cool / interesting! ;-) Maybe you and others involved should restore and finish it, for Wii, iPad or something?
The game is really prototypy, and I don't really have the time/money/ability to make this a fully fledge game.
I can probably recommend HAWX if you want a play experience close to what I was intending. Just tried the demo and the third person combat is really neat.
I'm afraid it's not quite that simple. The game was made when I was a noob programmer, and only seems to run on Windows 98. I've not been near the code for such a long time that I don't really think I'd be able to figure out how to fix it. It became a real mess :(.
Someone totally l33t might have a chance, but I doubt anyone that good would be interested in what would really be a wasted effort. It's just not a good game as it stands.
This really reminds me of Rez. Are you currently working on any other game projects? I am looking for people making interesting and abstract games to make my music for.
That's a really kind offer, and I really could have done with some sound and music back when I was making this, but unfortunately, I'm not developing K further any time in the near future.
The design predates ikaruga in this case, but I'm not claiming that ikaruga took this idea or anything. That would be insane: the idea of "switching light and dark" is pretty old.
Sorry. I guess I'm a bit touchy at people suggesting that I keep ripping off ideas after Goo and Liquid War... even though I came up with Goo without knowing about Liquid War first.
Similar ideas can be born in totally separate parallel cases, but the assumption is always that one person ripped off another. Oh well.
True. Could have ripped it off subliminally. In this case, I think I'm more likely to have been influenced by the board game Othello than Ikaruga, though - I don't believe I had heard of it at the time.
There are two kinds of rip offs; one where the creator simply totally knew what he was doing copying solely for profit. The other one is where two creators make the same thing independently. I wouldn't be surprised if you two had the same kind of inspiration. I mean, I don't know about you, but one time I looked at a chart and thought, wow awesome style. I later made a game only to find it was already done in nearly the same way befo. Did he see 'my chart' source or what? I'd say; yes, probably.
The great irony is that if this had been a gritty, realistic FPS game, no-one would have ever suggested it being a ripoff, even though there are loads of those.
Amen to that, gamers and mags are more interested in if it's "a Half-life2 killer" or the "next Crysis", they don't care if it's the 40th game with slow-motion moves. It's pretty sad, but it's a good thing most indie-gamers tend to know better..... or maybe not considering the popularity of 'Cave Story rip-off' among the indie game critics. :p
I'm really sorry but it's not for download. It's unfinished, and crashes most machines. Oh, and I can't say it's very fun yet. It needs a total overhaul, and that won't happen for a very long time.
Almost interesting fact: Rez was called "Project K" (K for Kandinski(?) ) while in production.
I stared this game before Rez had been announced though, so any resemblance is due to us both happening to lazily pick a sorta pseudo techy tron style asthetic.
Thanks for the inquiry, but I'm afraid not. Its current state is not something I'd be happy about sharing. It's quite a tricky game to play, and confusing to most people. As I say, it really would need a re-design. I'd consider this version prototype zero... but only if I was intending to pursue this design. And the likelyhood is that I won't be... not until I run out of other ideas.
This game would be really bad ass on Wii! You should totally make this game, but with a new color every level or something. This game could posibly be a smash hit, like katamari! Give it a shot!

Nothing stopping you from just uploading the prototype, a lot of people seem to want to try it out.

no worries, i don't think that you ripped off anything from any game, and then, who cares, this game looks great! XD

Often people are ripping off someone else, regardless whether or not they knew or not.

Looks like it's hard to see. Something I didn't like about a lot of Abstract SHMUPs.
alkafrazin 4 years ago
Very true!
I could, at this point, blame youtube encoding, but I'd only be kidding myself.
One of the reasons for the game was for me to have an excercise in clarity. It failed! Hence it not being released!
Still. Learned a lot from it.

that looks wicked! the world needs more abstract shooters..

...like it needs a hole in the head?

Thanks if you're not being sarcastic. In my defense, this was made before new-wave abstract shooters were overly prolific, by the way.
Haha, wow am I ever touchy and paranoid.
