My mother converted 3 days before Christmas when I was in the third grade. I am now 17 and know that it will be a struggle when I'm an "adult" at 18. My dad and I both aren't JW's, but I know all the things that ex-Jehovah's witnesses have went through. I have had to alter my life because of my mom's beliefs and with her trying to convert me. I'm atheist. I always will be. I stand strong.

Hello! I know how you feel! My first Christmas was when I was a freshman in high school, after my parents got divorced and I moved away with my mom and we broke away from the stupid Jdub (jehovah's witness) religion. I know EXACTLY what you're talking about, wanting things as a child that normal children already had. My dad was abusive and such a hypocrite, claiming to be this christian following the bible, yet treating his children horribly.
When I was 3 I was beaten 4 needing the toilet at a 2 hour JW meeting this continued for years until I was 16. I was forced at 9 years old 2 give a sermon on a subject I knew little about this continued at 16 my bitch mum made me start a college course I was not capable of compleating all through this I was bullied at school cos I was JW I wish I had done what you did I am away from them now they are nothing short of a brainwashing cult and they will even argue that best wished to you

More than 30 years ago, just after I became an evangelical Christian, I got hold of a book about two cults: Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. The Mormon section was first. I read it and thought they were nuts. Then I read the JW section and it made the Mormons sound sane! I pity children raised as JW's. (By the way, I deconverted from evangelicalism after 25 years. I'm just glad I didn't get suckered in by one of the weirder offshoots of Christianity!)

I disagree, this video confirms the experience of abusive parents who happen to be JWs. While it's true JW's wont' do birthdays, holidays, etc, the abuse she went through from her parents isn't how all jw parents treat their kids. What I also see in this video is someone who wanted to live their life their own way, with no restrictions. JW or not, anyone who intends to serve God wholeheartedly will have restrictions if they follow the bible.

You have a very narrow view of reality. Not everyone believes that the Bible is God's word. Not everyone believes in God. Everyone doesn't have the same view of Christianity that you do. If you study up on Bible history you will see that even Christ's disciples didn't share all of the same views.

In the past few weeks I've read the 2nd 1/2 of the bible almost twice. I for one 'do' want to really serve God, and not use problems in the organization as an excuse for them not being the truth or freedom. However, it looks like it may be going against God's commandments and there may be heavy judgement on those in it. If I leave, my life will be even HARDER then when I was one. Absolutely but it was really bad at the kingdom hall, if you spoke out of turn everyone would stare at your family and it was expected that your father take you outside and give you a good hiding for it. Ask others about JW's and this, I have memories as a young child watching others being bashed out the back porch of church for this very thing. My stomach used to turn. Yes but children who had bad childhoods who weren't JWs, there's always an extenuating circumstance isn't there. Their parent was on drugs or had some mental problem. For the JW thing I'm saying that it seems this WAS the extenuating circumstance. Do you think that if your father was a JW as well you would've had an equally good childhood, or if she was strict with the rules of the religion for you that it would've been as good?

I think my childhood represents a very common upbringing for the JWs and the fact that your mother married a non-JW shows that she wasn't a very good witness, as that's not allowed. It is then safe to assume that your childhood was in no way similar to mine due to this simple fact, Tim knows where it's at.
My mother wasn't a JW when marrying her husband. They both discoverd the whole religion when they lived together... So she IS NOT a bad jw as you're trying to say in some way. I know you couldn't know she wasn't back then, but keep in mind not all JW get raised as one from birth. So in that way your new statement is not able to be used anymore :D (i'm not trying to discuss with you or something, it's just the truth :) )

I don't think that being able to smoke or have birthday parties has anything to do with it. Something I can tell you by reconnecting with many former JWs that I knew grewing up is that I never knew the stuff they went through as well. I can name 8 right now off the top of my head that expirienced similar things as she did, which I never knew because of the face you put on for the congregation. I think it's FAR more common than we let on.

I think you missed a bit of what I said, it wasn't until I talked to the kids I went to the hall with after leaving to find out what they claimed was a great childhood while we were in was terrible. You might want to talk to the kids after they leave and see if they still say their childhood was so charmed.
But still i think i can (most times) see the difference between an abused kid and a 'normal' kid. Not saying there could be people with a bad childhood i didn't know of.
when I was a kid, there were some really nice JW kids in the neighborhood we all wanted to be our friends. We wanted to include them in parties/Halloween, but the parents wouldn't let them. I thought it was mean of them. Wow, what a story. Thanks for sharing.

My mother converted 3 days before Christmas when I was in the third grade. I am now 17 and know that it will be a struggle when I'm an "adult" at 18. My dad and I both aren't JW's, but I know all the things that ex-Jehovah's witnesses have went through. I have had to alter my life because of my mom's beliefs and with her trying to convert me. I'm atheist. I always will be. I stand strong.
I know the pain though...the pain of being a freak.

Hello! I know how you feel! My first Christmas was when I was a freshman in high school, after my parents got divorced and I moved away with my mom and we broke away from the stupid Jdub (jehovah's witness) religion. I know EXACTLY what you're talking about, wanting things as a child that normal children already had. My dad was abusive and such a hypocrite, claiming to be this christian following the bible, yet treating his children horribly.

More than 30 years ago, just after I became an evangelical Christian, I got hold of a book about two cults: Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. The Mormon section was first. I read it and thought they were nuts. Then I read the JW section and it made the Mormons sound sane! I pity children raised as JW's. (By the way, I deconverted from evangelicalism after 25 years. I'm just glad I didn't get suckered in by one of the weirder offshoots of Christianity!)

for me, I had to hide my true feelings and put on 'approved' feelings and sentiments. I was hiding from all reality really. I wish I had been more stubborn like you. I got spanked so many times during the meetings just for turning around in my seat and not taking notes but drawing pictures. I slept a lot during meetings.

I disagree, this video confirms the experience of abusive parents who happen to be JWs. While it's true JW's wont' do birthdays, holidays, etc, the abuse she went through from her parents isn't how all jw parents treat their kids. What I also see in this video is someone who wanted to live their life their own way, with no restrictions. JW or not, anyone who intends to serve God wholeheartedly will have restrictions if they follow the bible.

Bottom line, this video doesn't prove anything against the JW religion, it only proves she had abusive parents, and that she didn't like not being allowed to do 'worldly' things. Anyone working to disprove the JW's should be showing scriptural proof, and there is some, that they aren't following the bible. They should also be showing through the bible what one really must do to gain favor with Jehovah and Jesus. This video just makes most ex jws look like they dont' want to serve God.

You have a very narrow view of reality. Not everyone believes that the Bible is God's word. Not everyone believes in God. Everyone doesn't have the same view of Christianity that you do. If you study up on Bible history you will see that even Christ's disciples didn't share all of the same views.
Again, people will take away different things from watching this video. Fr me, it solidifies the fact that jws are so brainwashed that they will do things that they wouldn't ordinarily do.

proves that being raised as a JW, you won't be doing many things that may have pagan roots. Proves that some who are JW's, and may be abusive, may be abusive and strict. Anyway, my advice to anyone talking to an ex jw, soon to be, or opposer, is find out if they believe in God, the bible, or are an atheist. And bottom line, your personally responsible for your actions before God, your job to make sure of all things, and that your beliefs are in harmony with the bible.

Yes, but growing up jw doesn't prevent one from avoiding all things with pagan roots. The names of the days of the week and months of the year have pagan origins. The use of lipstick has pagan origins. Many wedding customs have pagan origins.
If you really believe each person is responsible for their actions before God, why are you so judgmental? Shouldn't you only be worried about yourself?

In the past few weeks I've read the 2nd 1/2 of the bible almost twice. I for one 'do' want to really serve God, and not use problems in the organization as an excuse for them not being the truth or freedom. However, it looks like it may be going against God's commandments and there may be heavy judgement on those in it. If I leave, my life will be even HARDER then when I was one. It will be pretty much identical to the life of the early apostles and Jesus, where in defending the truth..

To an apostate there must be something that you were once a member of and that you "apostated" from, BUT THIS IS NOT THE CASE!

Absolutely but it was really bad at the kingdom hall, if you spoke out of turn everyone would stare at your family and it was expected that your father take you outside and give you a good hiding for it. Ask others about JW's and this, I have memories as a young child watching others being bashed out the back porch of church for this very thing. My stomach used to turn. Just one more messed up thing about the JWs ... they don't deserve to bring up children!

This is a major problem with the JWs. It is not possible to disagree about anything for fear of getting shunned or at least of getting reprimanded.
It reminds me of the old Communist parties of Eastern Europe, countries where I once travelled.
There is an eerie resemblance between the old communist party structure and the Watchtower "Organization", a word that the Society loves to use in the Kingdom Ministry letter.
I think the Internet is the by far greatest threat to the Society ever.

Yes but children who had bad childhoods who weren't JWs, there's always an extenuating circumstance isn't there. Their parent was on drugs or had some mental problem. For the JW thing I'm saying that it seems this WAS the extenuating circumstance. Do you think that if your father was a JW as well you would've had an equally good childhood, or if she was strict with the rules of the religion for you that it would've been as good?

I think my childhood represents a very common upbringing for the JWs and the fact that your mother married a non-JW shows that she wasn't a very good witness, as that's not allowed. It is then safe to assume that your childhood was in no way similar to mine due to this simple fact, Tim knows where it's at.

My mother wasn't a JW when marrying her husband. They both discoverd the whole religion when they lived together... So she IS NOT a bad jw as you're trying to say in some way. I know you couldn't know she wasn't back then, but keep in mind not all JW get raised as one from birth. So in that way your new statement is not able to be used anymore :D (i'm not trying to discuss with you or something, it's just the truth :) )

I don't think that being able to smoke or have birthday parties has anything to do with it. Something I can tell you by reconnecting with many former JWs that I knew grewing up is that I never knew the stuff they went through as well. I can name 8 right now off the top of my head that expirienced similar things as she did, which I never knew because of the face you put on for the congregation. I think it's FAR more common than we let on.

I think you missed a bit of what I said, it wasn't until I talked to the kids I went to the hall with after leaving to find out what they claimed was a great childhood while we were in was terrible. You might want to talk to the kids after they leave and see if they still say their childhood was so charmed.

when I was a kid, there were some really nice JW kids in the neighborhood we all wanted to be our friends. We wanted to include them in parties/Halloween, but the parents wouldn't let them. I thought it was mean of them. Wow, what a story. Thanks for sharing.

All i am able to see is a huge downside after another. I can give you some examples if you like. But i would like to know what makes you actually think that religion is a good thing.

And if everyones belief that their future is not really in their hands then it verry soon won't be. What i try to say is that there won't be an armageddon as long as we (and i mean everyone including you and me) dont let it happen :)
