Noob drummer question: when playing gigs such as this, is every beat usually planned and played out eactly the same way every time, or is there a lot of improvising? I realise the drummer has an idea of what to play, obviously, but is it pinned down to every single hit?

@polarfishdotcom Definitely not. The only time I've ever played where any notes are actually written out is if it is a "classical" style arrangement. A percussion ensemble piece, a piece with a concert band, or with an orchestra. Even in those types of pieces there is some improv allowed. Most of the time in a gig like this, he would initially work off of some type of "lead" sheet that tells what the band is playing and he improves everything he plays from that sketch.

with an orchestra or big band. Check each of the greatest who also do that kind of gigs and you will find your answer.

Incredible technique but it's not authentic latin. Even his jazz playing seems to come from a rock perspective. That takes nothing from him as a talent... just an observation on his style. For something to compare this to search for:

João Bosco - Incompatibilidade De Gênios. The differences are subtle but clear to someone who loves the irregular syncopation of a good latin drummer.

Stylistically I prefer Keith Carlock's jazz.
