I've heard that rats should be kept in a main area of the house. And the problem for me is I have a dog and if I had rats that weren't kept in my room i'm concerned my dog might scare or harm them. Should I forget the idea about having rats all together?

@horselover8408 This is true. Rats should be where the people are most. But many people keep rats in their room, if you can stand having them keep you up at night or get used to their body odour, (many don't) then you can do so, just make sure to interact with them a lot.

That said... I have a dog who goes up to the rat cage. My rats were a bit scared at first but they got used to it. Now you have to make sure your dog is not small animal aggressive. If so, then it's best to keep the dog away.

@jorats Ok thanks. Yeah I don't mind the smell that much. But I think if I kept them in a room of the house where everyone is my family members might not like the smell. I don't know if my dog would bother them when they're in the cage (I doubt it) but if they were out he might try to get em so i'd probably let them have free time in my room away from him. Thanks

@iHyperAngelFoxA First of all please don't support pet stores, they get their rats from rat mills or worse yet breed their own. Rescue!!!

Rats need a minimum of one hour out time every single day, more is always better.

I've got 5 cats and it's not difficult to train them to stay away from the rats. You must protect the rats.

@jorats I'd rather get my rats from pet stores just because the pet store rats are mainly sold for snake food. Going into a pet shop and having all those sad faces looking at you knowing they will just end up eaten alive will make anyone give in .

HELP ME!!!!!!!! I got a new rat, a little girl at the time about 5 or 6 weeks and i think she is pregnant. How do I tell???? She is putting her bedding closely built up all around her dome, and nowshes putting some stuff tightly in the door way. it seems she never comes out except to get food water or do her buisness. is she pregnant, and if so...WHAT DO I DO????

Great video and set up for your rats! How do you keep your big rat cage so clean? My daughter only has two and it is alway so messy with droppings all over. What do you have on the bottoms(floors) of your cage? Do you clean it everyday? I love rats. :)

In this video, I was keeping bathmats at the bottom of the cage, today I use fleece material. I use litter pans and clean up the cage twice a day. It's a lot of work but they are worth it. :)

By litter pans, do you mean little pans in the corners with that pellet sruff? My daughter puts that on the bottom of her cage all over the floor and they go anywhere and all over the bottom. She hasn't been able to get them to only go in the corners. Do you think I should try the smaller pans and fleece on bottom? They have a 3 shelf cage. Thanks for your advice!

You could try the pans and see if the rats will take to the pans but you'd have to keep some litter pans on the levels as well. Check to see where they go and place them in those areas.
