I love how TCM's year-end memorials are always beautiful, stand-alone music videos. And it's impossible not to watch these and begin to cry midway through. (Farley, Harry, Jane, Cliff, Sidney Lumet, Arthur Laurents- OMG.) And the placement of Elizabeth Taylor AT THE VERY END walking off into the rain- just lovely.
@abcbatman1966 also football player and 80s B-film actor Bubba Smith, I can't believe they missed him! over the years they included ones like Corey Haim and Brad Renfro, why not him? he was in the emmys montage.
@Puffybelle lol - when I first heard this song on tcm I had the same reaction i.e. "desperate " to find this song - it is mesermizing - when I'm watching tcm and this song is played I go into a hypnotic state
I caught this on TCM for the first time this morning, and IMMEDIATELY had to find it! I mainly listen to Metal or Classical music (though I detest both of those terms), but I love old movies as well. This song is amazing! I have to agree with chadvonswan: the song coupled with the images is incredibly moving.
Such a great tribute. Save the best for last, naturally. R.I.P. Liz and everyone else too. A little late to note, though, Perdro Armendáriz, Jr. Has just passed on and should have gotten mention too, IMO.
Seeing this just breaks my heart... especially when they get to Edward Hardwicke. Dear god, it's like they chose the one clip that was guaranteed to tear my soul into little pieces... Kenneth Mars, Elisabeth Taylor, John Neville, Peter Falk, Edward Hardwicke... all of you, you will all be missed greatly.
Good song, and the video is so sad, especially how they show Elizabeth Taylor walking out into a storm at the end. I haven't heard of or seen many of the actors in the tribute, but it still a great and very moving tribute.
Every year TCM does a masterful job of its in memoriam tribute but this year's is by far the best. The dissolve of James Arness and Peter Falk's vocal interjection struck a chord in me.
well, I'm glad they DIDN'T show Michael Gough was alfred (in 1989-97 batman series).
"why" you ask, because he was well known in the British cinema decades before that. but had many smaller parts elsewhere (including "women in love" "boys from brazil" and "out of africa").
Started to tear up when I saw James Arness. Couldn't help it. Rest In Peace. They're all in Heaven now. Playing cards with James Byron Dean and MLK, JFK, and "THE DUKE".
Ah, my heart! TCM does it again with another wonderful and respectful montage (Care to take notes, Academy?). Personally, I think this one and 2008's tie for "most impactful" w/ regards to music and transitions--I keep tearing up. ;_; RIP to the deceased, and to the living: try to appreciate all of life (and keep watching classic movies). <3
While it's sad that these people are gone, at least most of them lived to advanced ages, including two who lived past 100, according to Wikipedia. God bless and Merry Christmas!
@nathendricks Cliff Robertson did a lot of very early television work including "playhouse" type dramas, what we would call "made for TV movies" today, and I wonder if it's one of those. I think the film right before it is him in "Days of Wine & Roses".
@amberfinest Sure why not? OK yes, yes yes Ryabn Dunn was a shit actor and I think even he would have agreed with it, but the Jackass films DID make tons of money...and many people enjoyed them.
As others have mentioned, TCM does such a memorable job of assembling these tributes. They let the camera linger just long enough before moving on to the next subject and they do an amazing job of shooting and editing the transitions between sections, not to mention choosing clips which work with the music beautifully and with each other. Bravo, TCM - and thank you.
Every year, I watch TCM Remembers and am shocked to find out there are celebs who died that I did not know had died during the past year. Sadly, the passing of these celebs are often overshadowed by stories of no talents reality TV stars, Paris Hilton's and Kim Kardashian's of the world.
I can always rely on TCM doing the best remberance... it inspires to look up actors/actresses that I have never heard of. Sadly the Oscars will never learn & use this....they might have to get rid a couple of jokes for the host or drop a dance number.
:( Harry Morgan's dead? just last week, my younger brother was watching a rerun of MASH and Harry Morgan came on the screen and i remember saying "it's hard to believe Harry Morgan's still around"...i mean, he was on the show during the last few seasons and into the 1980's and he did look like he was 80 years old even back then...R.I.P.
TCM always shows the greatest respect for movies and actors...even more when it comes to their yearly "Remembers" segments...it's just a shame that it seems every year the list of performers and directors gets longer and longer...
I may not have known the names, but I knew many of the faces. I didn't know David Nelson died earlier this year. I agree with everyone. TCM's rememberance is far superior to the Academy Awards (and all other award shows if you ask me). They don't look down on someone because they weren't well known or known for movies. I do believe that was the Academy's reasoning for not including Farrah.
Thumbs up if you saw this thinking they forgot to add Elizabeth Taylor at the end. Also, the people behind the Academy Awards need to hire the people behind TCM Remembers to do the memoriam because the Oscars omits actors like Farrah Fawcett, Corey Haim and Brad Renfro.
@XXXTheRappaXXX Tura Satana, Yvette Vickers, Norma Eberhardt to name a few. I absolutely love how TCM places them in the breathe as the Hollywood A-Listers. Beautiful!
As others have said, TCM always has the best yearly tributes that the Academy could learn from...I know many of my movies, but I had to look up some of the actors who are paid tribute to here.
Another fitting rememberance done by TCM to honor those of the film industry who passed this year. If only they could show this at the Oscars each year then nobody would be forgotten.
Every time I watch one of these videos, I just think 'who next year?'. So many greats this year, as there seem to be every year. Surely we can't afford to lose any more!
Every actor will get their chance on this. Someday my name will be on this.
