the only thing with winching from a nose hook is that, although you climb at a shallower angle, you need to pull the stick well back, which means if the cable lets go the glider can rear up very steeply, and it takes quick reactions to stop pulling and lower the nose, whereas with a belly hook, the stick is closer to neutral, so lowering the nose is a little less critical. That's my view, anyway.
We use the nose hooks. It's not ideal, as you get less altitude than you would with a CG hook. On the other hand, you get a very safe winch trainer, as there isn't enough up elevator authority to stall the glider once the launch is well in progress.
Great question; I should have put that in the description. Thanks for watching.
UPDATE for SSA magazine readers: The CCSC board ultimately voted to disallow winch use at our airfield, mostly over concerns about the proximity of the trees at our facility. We are still winching club 2-33s at another airport on weekdays, and are looking for a nearby weekend home for the operation.
So is there any idea if this will be in use next season? For the Annual Youth Camp in particular, I would love to come out and get my winch endorsement.
I am really liking this cover of learning to fly too. haha
Its still like in the 'more info' tab for this clip -- under evaluation. I doubt that we'll ever incorporate winch ops directly into youth camp. That said, we winched several mornings at camp last summer, just at Red Stewart and outside of the official camp syllabus. Regardless, hope to see you again next year.

Are these gliders fitted with belly hooks, or do you winch them using the original nose hooks for aerotowing?

Winch launches are so cool!

The music was distracting. An informative narriative of the launching process would have greatly improved the video.
