I think the reason it worked with Vanessa is because she was willing to settle down. And when he was with Winona they were both so young. But the way he would talk about her and the tattoo and proposal means he truly loved her.

Well the ink "proves" it in the way that he consciously tattoed her name on his arm with the intention that it would be there forever. Funny thing is that, he never COMPLETELY removed the tattoo. 90% of it is still there....
I think he was just having sex with Vanessa and bum an accident happened. He loved his daughter so much he decided to settle down with Vanessa. And yeah but a lot of couples stay together when they have kids. It don't mean they couldn't have been happier with someone else..

He himself had big problems such as with alcohol and I believe drugs does that make him a bad person?
