  • wow!!!!!!

  • bet them umbrela is worth some ?

  • Actually, Luther didn't die a week after this particular show. He died a week after final taping for THE SUMMER BROTHERS SMOTHERS SHOW in July 1968 which aired a few weeks after his death in August. This RE show is not even from 1968 but sometime in 1967. Cash was a little heavier by 1968 and began wearing turtle necks most of the time on both TV and in concert.

  • 1967

  • 1967

  • No more twisted seekers of this foolish gold

  • What a great clip; they were never better! Thanks for posting!

  • * In colour*

  • Just curious as to what cameras WSM-TV used in those days. Would it have been RCA TK-42 or GE PE-250? (I doubt Norelco PC-60/-70's would've been used.)

  • I wish the clip were longer...Ralph was cut-off in mid-sentence as I was wanting to hear more of what he was saying. It is an expensive set...but a lot of these program's were never aired or aired once and never rerun...it's an investment just like those country music box set collections from Bear Family in Germany. I hadn't bought the collection...it's so exhaustive...and there hasn't been any indication that Ray Stevens is featured much.

  • hahaha Johnny Cash would have been a great James Bond! He looks a little bit like Sean Connery in the first Bond movies! Well, maybe that's just my opinion but anyway, Johnny Cash is my alltime favourite singer :)

  • This is like finding a huge golden nuggat in the middle of the warehouse! What a

treasure to find of a legendary group of performers that have made an indeliable

mark on American Music. Legends Galore!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA "June Carter was a handful that day."

Folks when was she not?? :))

I wish I could order that but it's too much money. :( Shame.

  • i am seriously thinking about ordering this!

  • oh the memories. How I miss Johnny and June. Emery says it and yes, this was prime time for them. Junior Samples was from my home town and there was absolutely *nothing* fake about the man-he was the real deal...what you saw was Junior.

  • look at the box in the air so cool

  • did all u no that walk the line sounds better in this then any other

  • good job

  • great look on JC ...and TV used to go off the air on Sunday nights around 11.....after last program...The American Flag with The Star Spangled Banner...then fuzzzzzzz... mid 60's....

  • I LOVE THEM<333

  • This does appear to be from 1967. I was a child, but remember that Junior Samples became famous in country music in the spring of '67 with his comedy record, so if this was his first TV appearance, it must 1967. Ralph's show was broadcast from WSM TV (now WSMV) in Nashville, and it was an NBC affiliate. We got our first color set in '68, but I know WSM had been broadcasting local color programs since at least 1965. NBC's first nationwide color broadcast occurred January 1, 1954.

  • give to what give to what! i want that dvd!

  • google Emerys memories...for all the programs...

  • is is from 1967 because there is another video done in 1968 its Ring of fire and in that video Johnny cash looks more filled out then he did in 1967. Emerys video was in 1967 type in Johnny cash and june Carter 1967 rare footage in that video they both are waring the same cloaths and Johnny looks skinny like on this video.

  • Actually, color television was at least ten years old by 1968. NBC began broadcasting in color in 1958.

  • haha..aww.. poor Johnny and his umbrella!

  • look at john hold his guitar like that just so he could get closer to june...lol

  • I Like Johnnys Hair how do u get that style?

  • i like johnny cash in this year hes awsome

  • is it me, or does johnny almost trip on his way back to the microphone? oh well, wouldn't be the first time this guy fell, but, he ALWAYS got up! What a man!

  • i just love johnny cash good man just like elvis

  • To be honest with you, I think this is from '67, I've never seen Johnny move like that when he wasn't high. The look on June's face also kind of says "don't do anything stupid! Just sing! Please!"

  • I think he lost the network execs with the umbrellas.

  • I actually think it was simply the same old story of networks not wanting to air anything country music oriented.

the few country music shows on TV at the time were all syndicated and aired off the network. of course, Ralph only said they "shopped it around New York" so it's hard to tell if he means they tried selling it to a network or a syndication company.

ironically, CBS was airing country themed sit-com's at this time...so it's anybody's guess why it wasn't sold to a network.

  • I want that

    DVD

  • Wow, was this in his drugs period? He looks haggard man. He was something else that guy.

  • He's in great voice here.

  • Gives me goose bumps to see them together and how much she brightened his life. They were the best possible mates, personalities and ego together and went thru a lot. Powerful and loving.

  • Classic Cash

  • Sue Thompson is an absolute doll!

  • This is from 1968.

The Link to Emery's Memories says so...

  • They could be wrong...Ralph, in the video, toward the end of the clip says it's not been seen for almost 40 years...so depending on when this clip of Ralph was put together, I'd say 2006 or 2007 and the TV program must be from 1964 or 1965 because the clip is all about experimenting with color and it wasn't the standard until 1966 or 1967 to use color on nearly all programs...Andy Griffith's show began it's color episodes I believe in 1966? By 1968 color was the norm and not an "experiment".

  • It had to be before late July 1968 because Luther Perkins died at the beginning of August 1968 if I remember well. I think that this show date more of 1966 or 1967 like you say

  • melhor cantor de musica country de todos os tempos. nao tenho a menor duvida

  • June's billed here as June Carter but would insist on being billed as June Carter Cash from the time of her wedding to Johnny on March 1,1968. I'd say this was likely taped in '67 at the latest. Not to mention that Ralph didn't bring up June's marriage to John when he was genuinely surprised at her climbing over his lap to get to Junior Samples! LOL June perfected the character of a loopy, flirty hick for the stage but in reality was a grounded, faithful and very shrewd lady.

  • As always, Johnny's performances rocked (and good to see Warner Mack shortly before his tragic end). Junior Samples was funny. Whatever became of cute Sue Thompson?

  • I believ this is actually before 1968. I used to watch Johnny's own show in 68. And he was a little heavier than this in '68.

    Love Sue Thompson.

  • poor johnny with the umbrella. god. cheesy.

  • This is likely the last appearance by Luther Perkins before his untimely and tragic death on August 5, 1968. I like seeing Johnny here filled out a bit from his previous haggard, gaunted look when he was doing the pills.

  • Really great clip. I'm not quite sure what Ralph is talking about though when he says color TV was only two years old in 1968. I was watching color TV back in '62 and it had been around for a few years even then. Bonanza was broadcast in color starting in 1959 Anyway, it may be likely he meant it was new at the station he was primarily working at. It's great to see a clip from this time frame and I thank you and Mr. Emery for this great glimpse of the great Johnny Cash.

  • He may be referring to the time that the 3 major networks went all color, NBC and CBS in '66, ABC in '67.

  • This could very well be in 1968. Johnny never really did have a huge life-change we all think he did in 1967. He quit for a few months, but after Folsom was doing a lot of drugs again (according to Marshall's new book). Can anyone make out the album behind him?

  • The album (with John holding a microphone with eyes closed) is; Johnny Cash's Greatest Hits Volume 1

  • How'd you like Marshall's book? I enjoyed it, but, seems Marshall was the ONLY "saint" in the crowd! (According to Marshall!)

  • love it. thanks.

  • Just incredible- thanks for sharing!

  • Those three C-men were maybe at their prime best time.

Look out what a silly-billy country girl Johnny proposed.Five stars !

  • Maybe one of the final performances of Luther Perkins!

  • Yes he died in a house fire a week after this show!

  • @larrylhall who did dude who u on about if u dont mind e asking

  • @leeresbonbonpapier this was in 63 Luther died in 68 after being at folsom prison for a the recordings he did die in a house fire RIP

  • I think his voice sounded really very good . . . not what you'd expect while strung out on amphetamines. Why did his voice degrade a bit after he got clean? (Or is it just my imagination?)

  • He's not on amphetamines here. But you're right that his voice degraded a bit. Mostly during 1969-70, and that's due to smoking. When June became pregnant with John Carter(she was 40 at the time), I suspect John's cigarette intake increased. He quit smoking shortly after John Carter's birth and his voice got much better. Check out some of his records from 1972-80; he sounds great.

  • Ditto on this being 1968. Luther is playing the same gear as on "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. A sunburst Esquire guitar and a Black Face Super-Reverb. Voice sounds the same as at Folsom. LATE '67 at the earliest.

  • I believe this is late '67, possible even after he quit drugs (which was in November) but before he'd put on some weight. Folsom was very early '68 (January 13th) so it's no surprise that Luther would use the same gear as in late '67 or Johnny's voice would sound the same. We're talking only weeks or a couple of months earlier.

  • Hey Ellum, is this like the 2nd ever time us Luthermongers have ever seen that Sunburst Esquire? You're better at the cataloging his stuff than I...

  • Yea, its hard to get a good picture with him playing it. I believe that was his last Esquire. I need to get off my butt and find the link to the guy who did all the work detailing what he used over the years. He's a good guy to chat with. I just hunted down pictures for them and blab about what made them tick. Man, I REALLY need to get back after lutherperkins, com.

  • wow, fantastic! an actual video of them in 1968. i guess it would have been months after they've married. i hope there's more of them in that year.

  • Now looking that this video clipping of Johnny Cash and June Carter in 1968 and the latest clip I saw of them in 1967, this clip does look like it is in '67. When you compare both of the clips Johnny is skinny and sickly looking in them where as in '68 he was a lot bigger and healthier. So I guess what I'm saying is that I agree with rennert70.

  • This is great! Thanks for posting it! Where is this DVD he's talking about? Is it going to be released??? Where did you find this gem?

  • It seems Emery's memory's not that great. He says this is 1968 but, if you ask me, this looks more like 1967. Look how skinny Johnny is. That's how he looked in '67. In '68, after he had kicked drugs, he put on a bit of weight, in both his body and his face. You can see it even in pictures of the Folsom concert in January '68. In my opinion, this is definitely '67.

  • I don't have a hard time believing this is 1968; listen how similar the clip of FOLSOM PRISON BLUES here sounds compared to the 1968 Folsom Prison Concert.

  • It's called "Emery's Memories" and it's tied with the various "Memories" projects...the books, two with the name "Memories" and "More Memories", plus "The View from Nashville" and "50 Years Down a Country Road".

This isn't meaning that Ralph himself knows exactly when these performances took place unless there's a record, which there should be...if the production notes say 1968 then perhaps it is 1968...but I swear it's earlier, too, simply because Ralph says color experimentation.

  • never saw much video of him when he was at the hieght of the drugs

  • Wow have I missed this

  • wow wat a voice, definetly not 68 more likely 66-67
