  • the moral of this tale is simple, "follow by faith, not by sight" =)

  • This may have already been said (I didn't review all 90 comments); however, it bears repeating: other senses of the blind are heightened (he can feel the sun, hear cats in a (moist) forrest etc). Walking alone for years only intensifies them. If you'll notice, he fires on nobody till he is fired upon b/c it gives him an "audible bead" on the shooter. This is why cueball is left alive in the street: he never fires on Eli.

    Comments on PTS are interesting...

  • Sometimes I eat Ice cream.

  • I'm sure he would have been able to tell from the distinctive sound of dust motes falling on its cover across the room.

Or MacDowell could have spoken up and saved himself some writer's cramp. "Come on, Eli, we must be past all the 'begats' by now..."

  • India, Asia, Africa and Russia have no religion? The Hindus, Buddhists, Ethiopian Orthodox and Eastern Othodox religions would like to have a word with you. There are other religions out there that are not "Christian" and are far more peaceful than Christianity could hope to be.

  • After 30 years of hell he has made i out......

  • Did anyone notice at the end that by the time the Bible had started being reprinted and copied again when Eli came to the island, the Qur'an and the Talmud, along with many other religious books, had already been in circulation? But up until that point, Christianity was gone from the world, and look how the people became. Natural man, living in his wicked ways, doing the will of his father, the devil.

  • @Doulos7608 Not true. Speaking from a story standpoint and not my own views, The movie shows the fruit of Christianities "Follow us or you are sinners and deserve to go to hell attitude". The world reaped the harvest that Bible thumpers sowed....

  • @Axicore No, right, that has nothing to do with your own bigotted prejudice, as all can plainly see. The people were living like animals once the faith had been taken away, just as the heathen lives as animals today where the faith is absent. Look to India. Look to Asia and all of Africa. Look to what's happening to Europe, and how the Middle East has been for thousands of years. Look to the Soviet Union, which was COMPLETELY absent of religion, but abundant in bloodshed in the name of atheism.

  • @Doulos7608 They weren't in circulation, they were gathering dust on a shelf. The Alcatraz Press was printing books in preparation for a time when they could start to properly rebuild, but they weren't there yet. I didn't see any Quran or Talmud out in the wasteland either.

Besides, as some folks have (with at least partial accuracy) said, if they already had the Tanakh, the Torah and the Quran, then Eli didn't have to recite the Old Testament. He could have started with the Book of Matthew.

  • @MrRazorz You're aware that the Tanakh is the complete old testament, right? Anyway, I'm not getting where you're getting some link between the Qur'an and the Tanakh. I've read both books in part and they're like night and day. The Qur'an and the Talmud have some striking similarities though. Some believe that the Qur'an is partially plagerized from the Babylonian Talmud, but that's another issue.

Anyway, how could Eli have known that the Tanakh was already there? He was blind, remember? ;P

  • i may have not payed close enough attention to the movie but i feel that his blindness is a case of ambiguity

  • Never noticed he was blind, but now you say it, kinda makes sense. he could hear and smell really well. I mean, he heard the bird fliying in while Solara couldn't...I have to watch the movie again. :p

  • People, as they do today believed that religion was the cause of all war. So they purged the world of all religion to try and stop it. Which also showed the truth that it is not religion but rather corruption that causes war. And also, for those talking about Denzel Washington being blind, the whole point of that is "Walk by faith, not by sight"

  • Whats the reason of the war that fucked up the world?

  • @deloreandmc88 it has something to do with the bible, i think people feared its power

  • @Ravenlightwood It was due to religion right?

  • Ulitimate good karma ending!

  • Here's something to think about too ;D You know how Solara's mom is blind too, Eli asks if she was blinded in the flash...or when Jesus came down and took his people and stuff...and she just said that she was born that way.......so this could mean that he was blinded in the flash ;D

  • @Warhawkisafungame I don't think Eli was blinded by the flash... I think he was born blind. How could he have learnt to read braille if he was blinded by the flash?

  • @ChezzyKnytt With God's help of course, he had plenty of time to learn what he was given...but who knows, it doesn't say specifically, so either way we don't really know xP

  • Damn, this movie Kicks some serius butt, Eli is one hardcore Survivor, And one Hardcore Christian hehe :D

  • He's Blind in the movie.

  • Fuckin eh, people! Come on. Of course he is blind, thats the whole point. That's the "twist" of the movie!! When they reveal the Bible is in braille they dolly in with the camera onto Denzel's eyes. If you actually take the time to look you'll notice his eyes are hazy-white and he's got the million mile stare going on. Thats the whole damn point of the movie, the fact that a blind man who has walked for 30 years and is "blessed" by god is able to do all the incredible stuff he's able to do.

  • @kmccarney88 also when he talks to solara's mom (don't remember the name..) he asks if she got blinded in the flash, but she was already born that way...he probably asked that because he was blinded in the flash...

  • @kmccarney88 people should listen to you. that response makes the most sense. its not whether or not you can pick out all the details to prove that he is or isnt blind. its just the simple fact that that was the big twist and shocker!

  • @kmccarney88 Agreed. If you watch the movie again, you'll see that he shoots only after he's been shot at (to find his target), he bumps into things with his foot when he walks in certain places, the camera goes into slow motion when he enters a city or a bar full of people to assess the situation with his heightened sense of smell & hearing, he pulls the bandits into the dark tunnel in the first fight, etc., etc., etc....

  • @kmccarney88 so people dont get it even when kicked in the nuts or the bread box....and its that same reason the god had the book written in parables, no fool shall follow

  • @kmccarney88 its actually called thousand yard stare

  • @TheGanjaman619 - Yeah, no shit......thanks. I said that because I was exaggerating his condition. After all, the "thousand yard stare" was used to describe WWII and Vietnam veterans who returned back to the U.S. with acute stress disorder (aka Post traumatic Stress) and therefore just stared into space due to the shock of it all.

Considering Denzel's character is blind, and not suffering from PTS, I exaggerated it with "a million mile stare."

Get it? Enjoy the free history lesson. Thanks.

  • @kmccarney88 your preaching 2 the choir man if i didnt kno that i would not have corrected u now would i

  • arguing is like the special olympics...even if you win the race your still a fucking retard

  • @pwnmaster77 come up with your own stuff man

  • He is blind. The script even says so. Watch the movie a couple more times and you will notice details you may have missed before like during the gunfight at the old couple's house, Eli never shoots any of the bad guys. His only kill was the grenade he tossed out the window. (No accuracy needed). On the main street, he only shoots at those who shot first.

At the beginning he has to feel the skeleton in the car to find it has no shoes on. Sighted people could have seen this easily.

  • hes blind

  • 1. In the first house he comes to, Eli feels the cabinet and runs his hand along the dishes, not able to see if they are valuable or not, but to see if they are full.

    2. He bumps into the desk before opening the closet.

    3. He doesn't read his iPod "Chalenfilms," he notices that it is not playing, and presses many buttons to make sure its not paused. Many more mentioned by below comments.

  • it explicitly says in the script that he is "totally blind"

  • Umm, why hasn't anyone pointed out that the bible was in Braille...

  • He's fucking blind guys. He might not be completely without vision, but it's at least so bad that he'd be considered legally blind today. His Bible was brail, his eyes were glassy and stared off in the distance in some scenes, and if you look at just the first 10 mins of the movie you notice him running his hand along shelves and the bottom of a car to find items, not looking. He even bumps into a damn table trying to open a door in the house with the dead man hanging in it.

  • @PalaceOfExile he bumped into the table cuz it was kinda dark. AND how would he be able to instantly ask 'are those graves?' at the old people's house. also the book woulod have been brail since hardly ny1 could read braile so people wouldnt know what the book is AND as well as the fact that a bible in brail wouldnt be spotted so easy which would increase the chances of it surviving the burning of all the bibles

  • @dec20056 I'm pretty sure the movie itself implies the fact that he's blind. They put in too many clues for me to ignore, especially how they provided scenarios for him to show his exceptional ability with other senses. And then there's tracks on the soundtrack like "Blind Faith" with just provides more reason to believe. And like I said he might not have been COMPLETELY blind so that's how he saw things like the graves, houses in the distance, etc.

  • @PalaceOfExile He never saw the house. He wouldnt know there were house if the girl didnt point it out. The graves, since he has a strong sense of smell, he could've easily smelled the dead people's bodys and tell if there had meat or were just bones. Plus it says in wikipedia and the clues are just too much.

  • @Dizzymo3 He saw a house in the beginning of the movie with no girl to point it out. But anyways as long as we both agree he was blind that's all that matters.

  • @Dizzymo3 the whole point of graves are that you dont need to smell the bodies...

  • @dec20056 he is blind. its a fact. look it up. its been confirmed by the produces/directors. there have been many signs, like in the shoot out in the town he doesnt shoot any of the guys until they shoot at him first so he can hear where they are. also,he didnt shoot the bald guy because he didnt ever hear him shoot at him. again when he got shot in the end when the guy took the bible from him,he pulled out his knife but didn't attack, because he couldnt hear any of them, they were standing still

  • @dec20056 he is blind, it was confirmd by directors/producers. there were many signs, like in the shootout he didnt shoot any of the guys til they shot at him first, cuse he had to hear where they were. and in the end where the guy shoots him in the stomach and he pulls his knife out, he didn't attack any of the guys because he didnt know where they were, they werent talking or moving, just standing still

  • @805489 he didnt attack any of the guys because they had guns pointed at him.........

  • @dec20056 Eli didnt ask if there graves, the girl did and the oldwomen replied. Why would a man who can read, carry around a book that is for blind people? If he could read wouldn't be easier if made another copy just incase something happened? Plus at the end the zoom in his eyes, you can tell that aint a normal person's eye. Plus the burning thing is stupid. the book have a massive croos on the front, you can EASILY tell its a bible without reading it.

  • @Dizzymo3 not evry book wiv a cross on it is a bible....... and its the last bible ever so i think that if he wanted to restart the bible craze he would kinda need to carry around a book for blind people.

  • whats the song it plays at the end sequence of the movie

  • im looking for the song the one he sleep til his ipod get lowbat?wats the title pls?

  • There is a character in the Bible his name is Eli. Towards the end of his life he looses the light in his eyes. Basically he slowly becomes blind. I think it was supposed to be some kind of punishment for the sins of his sons. Not positive but I seem to remember that it's in the 1st Book of Kings.

I think slowly he becomes blind.

  • @icecon445 Nah he was blind since the start of the movie, when he kills the cat, he waits for so long, so the cat makes a noise so he can figure where it is.

  • ironic song name, for those who know what im talking about.

  • I had to go see it again just to watch for the blindness in action. One example: The gun fight in the street began when his back was turned to the unexpected gunshot. Then each of his kills were return shots toward the sound of each gunfiring. The finishing stare-down with Redridge was actually that he could not see or hear the aim. After knowing a man who was blind since birth Eli seemed almost believable enough to me.

  • He was blind from the intense flash of the atomic detonation.

And over 30 years his other senses have taken over.

When he starts citing the bible you can see that his eyes stare into blank space.

    Read the sypnosis.

What I'm saying should be true. :D

  • Jesus Christ, you don't have to be fucking blind to read braille.

  • no way he blind

  • Ok, I saw the movie, loved it, but I think I missed somthing.

Was Denzel's character blind in this movie? It being revealed as so?

  • have the same question. I guess so, hes always quick to react. Relies heavily on smell, reads a brail book and never takes off the glasses.

  • yes he's blind , it is showed in the end when he's saying the holy citations.

  • no, why the hell would he be blind?

  • It's a disputed plot feature people. Arguments could be made either way...

  • @trialanderror10 i think he is blind only after he is shot in the leg and is outside without his glasses. In the beginning he can see, he looks at things and read his ipod to see that its dead.

  • @trialanderror10 no they really can't; he is blind. he says it about 1 hour into the movie, he does not walk by site, he walks by faith. He can't see, God makes him aware of his surroundings. His Book is in braille, Him and the woman are both blind, it's actually quite obvious, there is no real reason to deny it. Unless it bothers you that he has faith in god.

  • @lolskylar I'm not denying anything; I'm simply stating that the film was produced in such a fashion that it could be debated whether or not he was truly blind. It a basis of personal interpretation and nothing to be judged against.

  • @trialanderror10 I heard recently that even blind people still have some of the mental processes that create imagery in their minds. Whatever blessing he had from God must have utilized these, as well as his other senses. Also, it's possible he wasn't blind before the world was wrecked, making his eye movements more natural than they would be if he where born blind.

  • @trialanderror10 uh actually bro it shows he was blind, cant debate, the bible he possesed was brail, carnagie even asked do u read? and he said ' every day".. plus many hints thru the film show u hes blind, like for exmple notice how he relies on his other senses much more then his sight, when they came to the house in the desert tht the canibals lived in, when he reaches the stairs he kicks them to know tht there in front of him somthing many blind people do in real lfe

  • @scilonthreat because it was an inference to faith.... he followed a voice in his head leading him to somewhere as he believed but he didnt know where or how he was gona get to where the voice was telling him... which is called blind faith which his blindness is inferred to, the movie was to show tht everyone has god inside them and even though he was blind he still was able to kill a bunch of guys and walk for 30 years with strong hopes.

  • @scilonthreat Because. He's Walking somewhere blind.. Blind Faith following ur heart.

  • @scilonthreat he was blind they explained that at the end... and they give many hints in the movie that he is. Watch the gun fight scene again and you'll see hints. Also in the movie he says "i walk by faith not by sight" also when he was talking to Salara's mom he said that many people were blinded by the flash during the war, also look at his eyes when they zoom in on them. Also his Bible was in braille.

  • @jifyum07 you are correct but because the bible is in braille means nothing it just means he can read it because he knew braille and noone else knows braille and if it were to be taken he could still remember it and the walk by faith not by sight means what he sees could be different from what he thinks it is what god says it is

  • @scilonthreat Because of the flash that takes place 30 years prior to the story. Anybody who was still alive since then who was not below ground was blinded. That's why What's-Her-Face's mom was blind too.

  • @GeneralShadow actually, her mom was blind from birth. she explained that.

  • @GeneralShadow Umm... how would he be able to read braille if he wasn't blind before the flash

  • @R3leaZ I meant Eli not the mom

  • @R3leaZ I suppose he learned how to read braille. I mean, he had 30 years to learn xD

  • @scilonthreat Yea IronChefSpam does explain well why there were signs of him being blind...and some other things to mention were his Great sense of Smell, and Hearing...also how he would Fight in tunnels or walled of areas so he could do better with the sound vibrations and know where everyone else was in comparison to where he was. There were other Little details too you just had to be paying realllly Close attention. I had ta watch it a second time, after i found out the first time at the end.

  • @ZEHINDULA what details? i just watched it a second time but i think hes not blind

  • @bleujae1 if you watched it the second time, you can even notice how he hits the door of the car to gauge distance. Also, he feels the bottom of the skeletons feet for boots. and when he was in the house he could smell the body but when the door fell off the hinge is what startled him. not the hanging body. he is blind

  • @nagulia haha tehy are real tricky about making this movie then :)

  • He's not blind. He intentionally tries to make eye contact with most of the other people he encounters. During the scene when Solara's mother enters his room to deliver him food and water, when she tells him that she is blind, he makes a jingle sound to gauge her response & to see if she is being truthful; he then watches her eyes move toward the source of the sound and realizes she is being truthful, and then trustingly stands up to receive the food and water.

  • @vortical911 you are retarded. he is blind and even the producers say thats the punch in the mouth at the end of the movie. like holly shit! hes freakin blind! wowzorz

  • @nagulia name-caller! & think about when he reads the signs in the movie. Think about it.

  • @vortical911 he doesnt read the signs. he always looks up to feel the sun on his face. which makes it easy to head west when the sun sets in the west duh : P

  • the beginning sounds like the intro to Runnin With the Devil haha
