Just eat some broccoli, blue berry, spinach, flax and hemp seed |: if you want "superfood"

  • How stupid and gross !!!! Serving the dead flesh of poor crocodiles !!!! Farmed in great numbers ??? Its unfortunate to not eat reptiles ??? This man is NUTS !!! Lock him up !! Another form of greed. Seaweed is another story and I have been using it for years.

  • Its cool that Andrew Zimmern is showing some of the many superfoods but its a shame hes not stressing the Raw preperations of it. Once you cook that Laver like they did on this show it destroys many of the vitamins.

  • I love Mate, it is really good. I spent 6 months in Argentina, and it is not just a drink, it is a way of life. I disagree that it is only popular in Argentina and Paraguay. It is also popular in Chile, Peru, Uruguay and some of Brazil. It is not loaded with caffeine, but has a natural boost. I recommend having it the traditional way, for the communal reasons, it is a good conversation starter, promotes openness and is good for you, but it is strong at first, but in time, it tastes good.

  • @InuyashaNaraku The other day I did some yerba mate tea and it felt like I have had some joint. So i prefer green tea to yerba mate.

  • @elgransr it take more than just one time. It doesn't happen overnight. What I do is add sugar on top every serving, about a teaspoon before you add water. As long as you don't make the water too hot and not burn the yerba, gradually the flavor will become much sweeter, and less bitter. Prefer it cold? Instead of water, use orange juice. You won't taste any bitterness of the yerba, but you will get all the benefits and good flavor.

  • I love this man, XD

  • move to were theese foods are abundant and eat them daily, your health isnt going to increase that much if say your eating oranges and now your on acai, but if its a snickers and u switch to goji then expect a huge change, food is food, crap is crap.

  • That women is a picky bitch. Thats the truth.

  • @JackNeedles I Totally agree with you, what a BITCH she is... well and we know why... AMERICANS don't want nobody HEALTH... they just want MONEY, MONEY! Those fruits are very easy to produce, and they come with this "magical" marketing... you know what... fuck them!

  • acai is overpriced. the trees used to be cut and killed for hearts of palm-- you know, those 99 cent cans. now someone is making a huge profit off a renewable treatment of common indigenous brazilian food. how much money do the native peoples, without whom nobody might have known about the fruit, make from "sharing" their knowledge?

we're all concerned with the next hot product we forget to ask where it comes from. who grows it. who makes it. who profits from it and whether it is right.

  • iF aCai has only twice the anti-oxidant of POMEGRANATE or Blue BERRY, whats the big deal about Acai? doesnt taste good even

  • It really makes a difference which product you consume. In my opinion, MonaVie has the top spot.

    FreshMonavieDOTcom

  • opc-3,zrii,frequensea,gbg,and acaiberry is all awesome products don't monavie contains acai berry as well.

  • Lol... Tree of life ?!?

here we just call "açaizeiro".. and we dont call cupuwasu we call cupuaçu. ^^

  • who do you get it?

  • this is how they market stuff in the US. they like to plunder native, exotic things which are bountiful and easy to produce, then market the heck out of it and make millions of dollars.

there are many equally healthy things growing locally all over the world. if only people knew what they were and where to look! problem is that requires a bit of education. and most people would rather be told something is healthy for them, than research it themselves.

  • Well said!

  • i say this as a pomologist. i study fruit. i grow dozens of varieties of rare trees, including acai, mangosteen, noni and such.

it bothers me immensely to see these MLM companies taking these fruit surplusses (or agricultural waste on some cases) and spinning some information about them to sell some ridiculously overpriced juice.

the people who sell this stuff know very little about health. it is frustrating.

  • and cupuassu (theobroma grandiflorum) is one of the next in line for exploitation.

it's got a nice flavor. buy other than that, i don't see much worth getting excited about. especially since they process it and sterilize it. there's probably healthier stuff growing in your backyard.

  • I agree, MLM schemes ruin the reputation of some decent fruits. Mangosteen for example, one of the best tasting fruits in the world, true, but its not a cure all, the rind has some xanthones true, but its too bitter to eat. Acai is a great little berry, and it is high in ORAC, along side the Goji, they really are super antioxidants, but how much is lost in processing who knows, fresh is always best, get your dried goji berries at any asian market for about 3 bucks a bag, they cheap and good.

  • - no need to shell out big bucks for Goji, I do agree that Capuaçu will be the next big thing, the Theobroma are actually one of the highest in ORAC factor of all fruits, yes plain dark chocolate is good for you. Theobroma grandiflorum ( Capuaçu) besides being edible, also is being used by cosmetic industry. other not mentioned foods that should be hot soon are, Lucuma, Yacón, Borojo, among others, not all super foods, but just good for one thing or another.

  • Lucuma is a perfect example of a surplus crop becoming an overpriced, overhyped food. These sapote trees were widely planted in Peru throughout the 1990's as a potential cash crop, but failed to produce much revenue. Since it can be dried and preserved, it is now being marketed as a "superfood" internationally but US health-food retail prospectors. It is purchased very cheaply from the growers.

  • Cupuassu is being planted on plantations. It is usually harvested from wild / unorganized trees.

Biochemically, the body can only utilize 6-7000 ORAC worth of antioxidant per day. So the illusory marketing ploy of "highest ORAC ever!" is a bit disingenuous.

Things like this are why I despise the "health food" industry in the USA (& perhaps retail in general). It is an industry that relies on (& feeds) the ignorance of consumers.

Pomologists such as myself are both amused & annoyed.

  • Mangosteen is abundant in SE Asia, where most rind-and-all products get their product. You can buy frozen mangosteens for $3-5 a lb in major cities. Cheap.

The rind is full of tannins, which are so intensely bitter as to make it inedible (and toxic) if one were to simply eat it. So, it must be processed to remove tannins. Until MLM companies, the pericarp was simply known as "compost" or "garbage." Now it's a super-expensive health cure-all! Fancy that.

  • I didn't know about the anti-oxidant limit, that's interesting I'll read up on that, I also just hate the FDA in the USA, they approve very risky drugs, yet ban some substances that are sometimes more effective and less risky, like the phen fen / ephedra war, at least they lifted the ban on ephedra, it was declared illegally banned, but the Pharmcos made their millions, and got what they wanted, people are scared to heck to even use that stuff now, which is their agenda

  • There is a nasty trend in the US market for "super foods" MLM marketers look for a little known fruit or herb, that may or may not have some research and benefits, they then buy cheap and sell expensive, if its a "hit" you have 3 doz. companies selling the stuff which eventually brings the costs down, then this cycle repeats, personally I grow Goji and Acai in my back yard, I like lucuma, i got mine for free from a friend, I havent tried Capuacu yet,

its an exotic here but obtainable cheap

  • super ACAI power

  • So whats with this Cupuwasu?

  • Read the report on the Mayo Clinic website. Yerba mate increases the risk of mouth cancer (and lung and esophagus cancer).

  • Yerba Mate Tea is great to kill my appetite. Love it. Don't know what is in it, but it sure works for me.

  • Mona Vie actually harvests 85% of the Acai berry that is put on the market. Locals are paid $1-2 a bushel of berries. They are taken down the river and flash freezed (if you pick them and let the berries sit for longer then 24hours they lose 90% of the nutrients) Mona vie sends back alot of money to build schools and help the locals.

  • and to answer the 2nd question, The Mona Vie blend is patten pending. Thus they do not give out the % of Acai in the Juice. To my knowledge each bottle of juice is 50% Acai.

    Does this help?

  • I'm sorry, they do not actually purchase from Sambazon, which would raise further questions...Where DO they get it from and what are their suppliers business practices (fair trade)?

  • I have two. Why does MonaVie not discuss the amount of Acai in their product, and why is the puree form from Sambazon (who they purchase their acai from) so cheap while...need I finish?

  • I would be glad to answer quesions people have about Acai berries, or buying Mona Vie acai berry blend.
