That is so wicked. I would like to check it out. Before they moved the Austin airport to the outskirts of the city they flew real slow and low over our house all day and all night which was just north of UT campus. Nothing compared to that in the video but close enough you could feel the power, rumble, and sometimes moisture from them. Sounds annoying but I actually got a kick out of it. Especially when the American Airlines Jumbo's would fly over.
Why would the passengers or the pilots be screaming? The thrill of Sint-Maarten is for the people on the beach, for those inside the plane it is a simple, regular landing. Sint-Maarten is not challenging at all for pilots. They don't give a shit if there is a beach, a meadow, water, a corn field or something else in front of the runway. As long as it has no height, it is of no importance or concern.
I heard that usually after 300 landings... It mostly depends on what surface the aircraft is landing (i.e. dry/wet/ice). But the number isn't lower than 100 landings...
Exactly, that's why they set braking force during the approach (as I remember there are 4 levels - 1, 2, 3 and MAX - I don't have anymore data in this subject)
I don't think it overrides the system. More likely it's just a braking 'shot' (manual brakes use full braking power).
NOTICE: I'm talking about my experience in MS Flight Sim - not a professional simulator, which is used for real pilot's training. Braking settings may differ in a real plane.
Nice? I fly heavies! That approach and landing is completely uncalled for and dangerous. He would have had to have ducked significantly below a PAPI, VASI, or ILS glideslope to do that and that is completely unprofessional and no doubt, against his company's SOPs. If I had a time-date stamp and a tail number, his company chief pilot would be getting a call from me.
Your weight and being able to stay on a glideslope aren't dependent on one another. At any given configuration, airspeed, and weight, a specific throttle setting will be required during any phase of flight. If he's heavy then he'll be using a higher throttle setting to maintain glideslope.
In the case of the plane I fly, if we're not using autothrottles, on a 3° glideslope, we divide our gross weight by 100, and make the fuel flow for each engine equal that number. It always works for us!
Interesting, considering a 747 can overturn a car 100 metres away with its engines on full throttle. (Of course though, when a plane lands it puts its engines into reverse).
@jephsteph He-He It is not a 'Real" beach for sunbathing! It is a beach for plane"Spotters"! Look how narrow it is! Still only place you can get a tan and see the undercarridge of a 747!
meh, u mite be right , but there are 2 islands with similar names in that region, one of them is netherlands antilles property, and another is governed by guadeloup. the locals consider themselves antillian though.
It really is the same island. The south part is Dutch and the north part is French.
The French part used to be in the Guadeloupe, but a couple of years ago it became independent of the Gaudeloupe and became a separate over-sea territory of France.
FOCK! My sandcastle!

As impressive as A380's are, you still have to give respect to the big 47!

I've always wanted to know: are a plane's tires flat-spotted on every landing? How often do they have to be changed out?

You can waist a couple of new tyres on one occasion at once with both your feet firmly on the brakes during landing.
ee000011 1 year ago
Exactly, that's why they set braking force during the approach (as I remember there are 4 levels - 1, 2, 3 and MAX - I don't have anymore data in this subject)

Don't forget to select autobrakes. Does manual foot braking overrides the system?

I was talking about autobrakes. :)

Not much of an autobrake, is it? Don't know. Never flew anything bigger than Falcon 20 (no autospoilers, no autobrakes on that one).
