Bill Anderson is truly a legendary giant in the country music industry. His music appeals to all generations and he has had best-sellers *every decade* of his career, which will be an unlikely feat for the "country rock" performers coming up in the business now. Bill is also a true southern gentleman and a top-notch entertainer as well.
@steinsteel It’s this terrible new-stuff that has reintroduced the spirit of the stars you mentioned; country music today is just really bad soft rock....Jack White won Loretta Lyn a Grammy and Gillian Welch continues to resurrect the spirit of the Carters. Without young folk picking up on the real stuff, it will remain a distant memory.
i saw him perform a couple of years ago at a small festival in Virginia, Illinois. His band was great and he sounded good as well. What really impressed me was tyhe amount of time they spent on the stage, how they played one song after another, truly entertained, and probably would have played til morning if the crowd had wanted it.
This particular clip was from the landmark motion picture, Las Vegas Hillbillys and was filmed in December 1965. Las Vegas Hillbillys featured a stellar line up of country music's finest, including Anderson, as well as Connie Smith, Del Reeves, Sonny James, Ferlin Husky, Wilma Burgess and others. The vocal harmonies here are provided by the late, great Jimmy Gateley, long time leader of Anderson's Po' Boys and a Decca solo artist in his own right.
I just came across this video. What a treat! The steel picker (Weldon Myrick) is still my best friend to this day. Back in about 1962, Bill and band came to my hometown, and I rode on the bus with Bill and gang to one of the places locally where they were playing, and I have a old home movie of the get together. Cool.
I love Bill's music and love this song - wish they'd let him sing the full thing on the Opry, anytime I hear him do it he only ever gets the one line of it!
Bill was a major star. This is just one of his many big hits. There are still his albums available. He also had a show on The Nashville Network called Fandango. He was a great act to see live also, and is still seen on the Opry.
Now this is definetley worth 5*****, a great country song.Didn't know Bill Anderson, but glad you introduced him to me. Great song, Great singer. straight to my fav's. Thankyou mrronniea for posting . - Geena.

I seem to remember Jimmy Gately had some western stores in the 70's in the Nashville area. I haven't heard anything about him in many years.
