Hey, im having trouble catching fish on my rapala f7 crankbait, i was wondering if you could give me any tips because i fish in a pond not a lake. Thank you and if not great video you truly are an excellent fisherman this is how fishing should be.
Two at a time?? Who do you think you are? Timmy Horton?? LOL!!
Brother Alton, seeing you win the Classic was a great experience.... me and my two little girls were there for the weigh-in and we appreciate your devotion to your fans and the great Savior we serve.
Would a 'mighty god' say it's ok to rip a hook into the mouth of a great creature for fun? Your god of christianity doesn't. My god says It's ok for now until I feel bad about it. Aside from that thanks for the info/advertisement for the lure. lol.
Alton...tell Trey Kistler BIG JOHN from VA said hello...at first years ago i didnt believe line matters..but i found it really does...jobo like he said dropping down to a 8-10 lb test will drop that bait a couple feet...well for me it did....good video Alton..looking forward to more
Never fish a snap swivel. That next fish could be the biggest of your life, and you want the line between you and the fish. Snap swivels change the action and also they are often the weak link.
ive always had good strikes with crank bait but as good as they work its just as easy to lose them i lost my best perch crank yesterday its cought me over 40 good sized fish rest in peace tryed and true sigh......
your going to be using mono most of the time and therefor it has alot of stretch so the bast way to get a crankbait unhung is get some slack in your like and then pull the line in between the reel and the first rod guide and pull real hard and pop it and it should come unhung.
i like to take the hooks off or just put a small single hook on them to see whats hittin, but in pressured lakes around here i use no hooks when pre fishing. it works well.
Most crankbaits won't quite reach the depth listed on the package except under perfect circumstances. You can get more depth by switching to lighter line (10#) and making really far casts. You will be better off to judge running depth for each crankbait yourself. Try not to rely solely on the depth listed on the package. Hope this helps!
@joblo252 First try using lighter line as crankbaits will dive deeper on lighter line. Also use fluorocarbon to help achieve maximum depth. Some cranks do not dive as deep as the package indicates, so you may have to test individual baits to determine actual diving depth. As a guide, here is the info for Fat Free Shad crankbaits. BD5 dives 4-6 feet, BD6 Dives 8-10 feet, BD7 dives 12-15 feet. Hope this helps
bass pro shops xps brand cranks are pretty damned close tho. Especially their line of lipless crankbaits. I've actually had more success with them than the fat free shads, but xps tournament brand runs about 1-2 dollars more.
@alton4bass heey man i got a question i normally fish in a big River its 6 to 7 meters deep what will be a good bait for me you think ( sorry for bad english)
Mr. Jig can catch em crankin too!! Really cool video! My buddy just got back from fishing Falcon with his dad (Ryan and Elton Luce) and he said they had a blast! Good luck in the Classic later this month! I will be cheering you on all season long! Oh, your blog is truly inpirational as well as your character. We serve a mighty God!!
I am using a Kistler Magnesium crankbait rod 7' length, medium action. The rod is made of composite glass / graphite and is perfect for cranking. The reel is an Ardent XS-1000 spooled with 14# test Silver Thread Fluorocarbon line. Hope this helps!
I use crankbaits in depths of 18 feet or less. The key is to find a bait that will dive deep enough to contact the bottom. For example, if you are fishing 5 feet deep, select a crankbait that will dive 6 feet. In this video I was fishing about 12-15 feet of water with a deep diving Fat Free Shad.
cjhfish...For crankbaits, I use a soft action rod...E-glass cranking rods, made of fiberglass absorb shock very well, which is important when fishing crankbaits. The rods also transmit bottom information from the lure, such as rocks, soft or hard bottom, stumps...
However, some of the graphite composite rods that are designed for crankbait fishing work very well.
My personal favorite setup for a deepdiver is 10lb. flourocarbon and a 7' Med. action crankbait rod.
Hey alton its me Luis Gonzalez, the guy you met at that Car Wash in Zapata. This video i think you were fishing in mexico in the Salado across Becon lodge. Call me!! To see when your coming down.
Hey alton its me Luis from Zapata, Texas hope you doin well during your holidays and tournaments. Hope to see you down here its a whole other lake to fish know since the water is up really high. nala420420 is right on his tip. You can also take your palm and pop the butt of your rod that works for me also. If popping the line does not work.

whats the depth for using a crank bait?
tamadrummer5 3 years ago
you can get crank for all different depths. It depends on weight of the crank, the shape of the bill and the weight of the line.
worldstumper314 3 years ago
I use crankbaits in depths of 18 feet or less. The key is to find a bait that will dive deep enough to contact the bottom. For example, if you are fishing 5 feet deep, select a crankbait that will dive 6 feet. In this video I was fishing about 12-15 feet of water with a deep diving Fat Free Shad.
