@1jackiepuppet If you think this performance sucks you know nothing about musical performance and probably are mad it doesn't sound 100% like it does on the album.
"I was just a goofy kid who wanted to be cool and play fuckin guitar"--Edward Van Halen--Take note laddies, we'll never see another band or another player like this again.
If anyone today wants to know what the big deal about Van Halen is...this video says it all no more words necessary. Hope they drop a new album this summer...and it just f'n rocks!
Van Halen at their peak. 1973-present. Seriously, has there been a band since Van Halen that has had such an amazing catalogue of songs, and the ability to put on great live shows?
@Trace7173 Yeah...I just read a quote from Eddie back in the day...he was saying how he kind of started out playing the standard blues based style, which relies mostly on the first 3 fingers (and I totally love that style by the way) but when he started using his pinky and making those big stretches, he really came into his own. Anyway, I always loved this performance. Rock On, y'all.
@Trace7173 He used to brag he could reach 7 frets from the 1st, comfortably and from the 12th fret, he could reach any fret from there. He has some freaky big hands for a guy who's stands 5'8". But it's also from practice... however, he's developed arthritis, so even after surgery he might have some trouble stretching like he used to.
@DarthKazi I'm 5'8" and have small hands but I can make that 12-19 fret stretch lick no problem and run it descending all the way down the strings in a sequence, but it took a lot of practice and slowwwww practice...
@theShowStopper321 Yeah, I'm 6'1" but have hands like a 5'8" guy!!! ;) Seriously though, Randy Rhoads has small hands but developed good stretch from his classical training. I think Ed's reasoning was voicings he liked that required another couple frets of reach. But again, he's got large hands for a guy his size, so that helps.
I think the riff from "Women in Love" must be a personal favorite of Eddie's or something...He's always working it into random soloing from the classic period and even during interviews where he is seen playing....
@DuaLeaD him and al did something very similar in this same song at the US festival . . . i love that little lick . . . . and he can play it with such feeling . . .
I just can't believe how amazing Ed is at guitar. He's a greater genius than Einstein. The things he's done on the albums can blow anyone's mind. Long live EVH!!
This is an incredible version of Somebody Get Me a Doctor; awesome addition of I'm So Glad. However, while the band is naturally on fire, I often resent Dave for being such an unprofessional drunk. Because he was more concerned with how he looked and his (albeit hysterical and highly entertaining) stage antics than remembering lyrics, we'll likely never see a live album from this era.
I love how Ed and Dave seem to really like each other here. If there was a lot of infighting going on at that point at least they didn't let it show on stage.
@DarthKazi Its palm swept harmonics. U pull off to open strings repeatedly and drag your picking hand palm lightly across the string u pull off from. e.g. repeateldy pull off 4-2-0 on the G string and lightly drag the back of your pick hand across that string starting near the pick up.

Van Halen ala DLR is just the only way...now this was the rock best band ever. Had they not split in 85' commin off the 84' tour, with the album 1984 paving the way. You woulda seen something even better than Vanhagar. They woulda taken over the world and broken mega records galore. US Festival they were the highest paid live act ever $17,000 a min. with the largest audience ever. Sammy just got dropped off by heli on the high speed train that took him 4 a good ride. Dave personified it all.
Yes had they not broken up in 85 the numbers would have spoken for themselves. To see that you need look at the beginning and the end in 85...now follow that line from the start to the end...see it goin straight up? The serious talk in rock and roll was Van Halen to that point in 85. This was the new "Zeplin" that made u forget about Zeplin. Personally Im not a big Zep fan. I'm more into modern music than older stuff.
Man I could say I was lucky enough to see the early Van Halen back in the late 70s and early 80s. Those were "THE" best Van Halen of all time. When you see them play live, its like being at a party. Those times were Eddie's prime, his playing was the greatest and everyone wanted to play like him. Back then rock bands had melody and catchy riffs, unlike today.
I just gotta say, songwriting must be part of the equation. The playing prowess should be combined with something memorable...? My favorites are:
Ritchie Blackmore-Tony Iommi-Micheal Schenker-Glenn Tipton-Randy Rhoads-Steven Stills These guys were "instrumental" in the development of my Music tastes cos I have musical ancestors, but just an ear to give...!
and guitarist what edward van halen has done and continue to do 32 years later. 32 years ago when we were littery blown away by the trure alltime greatest master guitarist edward van halen. i'm shure if you ask i aready heard al di meola say eddie van halen was the best hes ever heard or seen on guitar he called him a master guitarist/musician this is a fact not some bullshit opion or lie plain fucking fact. i dont know about the others you mentioned but they would to say the same!
edward van halen = pure fucking genuis on the guitar no one past or present will ever past his ability and musical genuis so far 32 years later NO ONE AND I DO MEAN NO ONE PAST OR PRESENT HAS EVEN COME CLOSE TO king edward van halen. LONG LIVE THE LEAGEND AND ALLTIME KING OF GUITAR EDWARD VAN HALEN!!!!!!
God, please tell me one of these amatuer douche bags didn't just compare Steve Vai to EVH!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA FUCKIN HA!!! You should kill yourself immediately as you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING when it comes to the order of things as far as rock guitarist and the timeline, period......again, kill yourself immediately after your next game of Dungeons and Dragons, please, as a favor to Mankind!!!
Theirs classical, blues, minor, major scales, sus chords , basic chords, great guitar players, diminished, augmented music theory, arpreggios, jazz chords, back stage passes, he's better, right way, wrong way, who the F_____ cares but Eddie Van Halen- did it -his own way!!!!!!!!!
Randy Rhoades was on the verge of being one of the greatest. Please don't compare these two. Guitarists are all great, I never thought there would be anyone better then Eddie, but that depends on the extent of what level you want to take it. Eddie took it to a level no one touched for years. Now, look what Steve Vai is doing.
Steve Vai doesn't do do diddly squat for me on guitar! And people can can compare what the fuck they want! Who do you think you are the youtube police or something! Shut up and go listen to Steve Vai's geeky tricky sounds that have no edge whatsoever and leave me alone! No one touches Eddie! You wont see Steve Vai getting a lifetime achievement award during this lifetime so stfu!
dude , i have to say i like little bits of vai. but eddie will always be rock god and the most influentual guitar player of all time. screw all these eddie haters who cant admit that he changed modern guitar playing for good , who else will make such an impact
i totally agree, he was way more influential than ANY other guitarist, he's got nothing on hendrix or jimmy page when it comes to heavy rock guitar... oh wait... And when most people allude to his "two-handed" technique as actually being his, they don't check their facts...
great guitarist, great band, great influence... just not the best.
jimmy page and jimi hendrix combined wouldnt or couldnt make one edward van halen thats a fact not some empty fucking opinion and KING EDWARD IS A HELL OF ALOT MORE THAN JUST TAPPING DOUCHE BOY GET YOU FUCKING FACTS STRAIGHT IDIOT.
i'm aware that he's capable of more than tapping... i'm also aware that you are an uneducated moron unworthy of the time it takes for me to respond, all 45 seconds worth.
there are literally dozens of more "talented" or "influential" guitarists than EVH, they just don't play this gay, formulaic party rock. let's just name a few:
Al Di Meola
John McLaughlin
Paco De Lucia
Pat Metheny
Larry Coryell
Chet Atkins
Django Reinhardt
As you might notice, I excluded rock musicians to make a point....
asshole what eddie started and changed backin 1978 and 1979 no fucking guitarist was doing what edward was doing a did as a matter of fact guitar player international have edward van halen and jimi hendrix the two most influental guitarist of alltime and most guitarist/musicians claim eddie van halen is the biggist influence and i also agree. 1978 eddie van halen changed the whole guitar playing world. guitar would be no weres neare were it is today if it wasnt for edward van halen not hendrix.
hendrix and page combined dont even add up to one edward the king of guitars van halen i also a interviews goingback to there1978 world toure and jimmy page was so fucking amazed of edward van halen that he made it apoint not to tour with them thats a fact not a opion. also have another were page says he wishes he could play like edward van halen and he personly thought that it jimi hendrix was alive he hendrix would have avoided edward van halen because he's that good the best ever he's king!
It's all about chasing sounds as the late great Les Paul said. Eddie was invited to the Les Paul tribute back in 1990(?) and played brilliantly. Les loved it, why shouldn't we?
on edward van halen he calls him a complete guitar genuis he creadits eddie for doing just as much changing just as much as him self BUT les paul said edward van halen took the guitar into outer space much futher than he ever could and in his opion much futher than jimi hendrix ever could. but he does creadit both hendrix and van halen for the huge and major introvative leaps and bounds they both did with the guitar. he creadits edward van halen more.
and in late 1977 early 1978 when that first van halen album was released jimi hendrix did back flips in his grave and jimmy page cried for days because the bo
th knew it was all over for them. eddie van halen got the best guitarist and most valueblbe player from 1978 to 1998 20 straight years no guitarist in history come's close to that run no one and no one will not in our life time and a few years later eddie van halen recives most influental guitarist of alltime along with jimi hendrix.
i saw van halens 1978 and 1979 world tour and they hasnt been a toure from any band could even comes close to thoes two toures from 1978 and 1979 and that includes zeppelin they wouldnt stand a snow ball in hell up against the great van halen back in 1978 or 1979 zepplin was touring in 1979 and they saw what van halen did to ozzy and black sabbath they destroyed sabbath ozzy was with sabbath 1978. zeppelin would have followed the same fate as sabbath if the toured with the great van halen!
there 1978 album has sold over 20 million albums. there 1979 album has sold 17+ million records thats 37 million injust there first two album's from 1978 and 1979. van halen has sold atotal to date this isnt counting the new album thats coming out soon its exspecting to 15 million albums world wide witch would bring the album sales up to one hundred and 34 million albums sold plus the older albums continue to bring in 4 to 5 million a year each!
Randy Rhoads didn't have any competition, not even with Eddie. He only had two albums(minus quiet riot days)and still had the biggest respect amongst guitar heroes to be.I realize this is just my own opinion and some will agree and some won't(especially on a VH video). But great guitar playing by anyone is still great guitar playing...
I dont like Eddie, i think he is idiot and off his rocker. BUT, he is way better than Randy Rhodes, because he is still alive!!! EVH never got the idea to buzz the tour bus with an airplane that he was not certified to fly...sad but true
I saw a VH1 interview that sharon osbourne said it was randy trying to buzz the tourbus to 'scare' Ozzy; who was sleeping in the tour bus as the plane clipped the bus and then crashed. but then again, maybe she was just lying....
Sharon also says Randy was scared of flying. In the end all we have are the facts. Fact; Randy was not the pilot of the aircraft. Fact; In the end Randy would be nothing without Edward Van Halen to compare him to.
dude rhoads has more impact that EVH? are you kidding? thats like saying Janis Joplin had more influence on guitar than Jimi Hendrix. Your nucking futs.
if you like this type of music then you should check out my band, custom guns, on my page. We kick some ass but we desperately need a frontman in our band and we live in the san antonio area!!!
I think Eddie used to play waaaaaay much louder back then...we could feel the sound pushing our heads back.....Amazing.....Please, somebody get me a doctor!!!
i seen vh on this tour and you pay good money to eddie but dave is such a joke they should have gave back a third of your ticket price for him being such a shitbox!

Man I could say I was lucky enough to see the early Van Halen back in the late 70s and early 80s. Those were "THE" best Van Halen of all time. When you see them play live, its like being at a party. Those times were Eddie's prime, his playing was the greatest and everyone wanted to play like him. Back then rock bands had melody and catchy riffs, unlike today.
gmlasam 2 years ago
I just gotta say, songwriting must be part of the equation. The playing prowess should be combined with something memorable...? My favorites are:
Ritchie Blackmore-Tony Iommi-Micheal Schenker-Glenn Tipton-Randy Rhoads-Steven Stills These guys were "instrumental" in the development of my Music tastes cos I have musical ancestors, but just an ear to give...!

and guitarist what edward van halen has done and continue to do 32 years later. 32 years ago when we were littery blown away by the trure alltime greatest master guitarist edward van halen. i'm shure if you ask i aready heard al di meola say eddie van halen was the best hes ever heard or seen on guitar he called him a master guitarist/musician this is a fact not some bullshit opion or lie plain fucking fact. i dont know about the others you mentioned but they would to say the same!
stratdem 2 years ago
edward van halen = pure fucking genuis on the guitar no one past or present will ever past his ability and musical genuis so far 32 years later NO ONE AND I DO MEAN NO ONE PAST OR PRESENT HAS EVEN COME CLOSE TO king edward van halen.

GoofyGuitar68 2 years ago
Randy Rhoades was on the verge of being one of the greatest. Please don't compare these two. Guitarists are all great, I never thought there would be anyone better then Eddie, but that depends on the extent of what level you want to take it. Eddie took it to a level no one touched for years. Now, look what Steve Vai is doing.
JohnnyStorm2007 2 years ago
Steve Vai doesn't do do diddly squat for me on guitar! And people can can compare what the fuck they want! Who do you think you are the youtube police or something! Shut up and go listen to Steve Vai's geeky tricky sounds that have no edge whatsoever and leave me alone! No one touches Eddie! You wont see Steve Vai getting a lifetime achievement award during this lifetime so stfu!
happyjoe4ever 2 years ago 2
dude , i have to say i like little bits of vai. but eddie will always be rock god and the most influentual guitar player of all time. screw all these eddie haters who cant admit that he changed modern guitar playing for good , who else will make such an impact
flatlandrory 2 years ago 2
Know what you mean but we just can't fix stupid and souless! LOL! Only one way to rock and that's with EDDIE!
happyjoe4ever 2 years ago
i'm with you dude, its the way to rock.peace
flatlandrory 2 years ago
Yeah a little Steve Vai never hurt anyone but he's a tad too goofy for me to take seriously. Eddie is just the coolest ever!
hanzwieman 2 years ago
yeah dude,i just think vai can be too technique heavey at times,no real purpose to it lol.peace
flatlandrory 2 years ago
Thanks man I agree keep the rock alive!
hanzwieman 2 years ago
i totally agree, he was way more influential than ANY other guitarist, he's got nothing on hendrix or jimmy page when it comes to heavy rock guitar... oh wait... And when most people allude to his "two-handed" technique as actually being his, they don't check their facts...
great guitarist, great band, great influence... just not the best.
BobMillahhh 2 years ago
jimmy page and jimi hendrix combined wouldnt or couldnt make one edward van halen thats a fact not some empty fucking opinion and KING EDWARD IS A HELL OF ALOT MORE THAN JUST TAPPING DOUCHE BOY GET YOU FUCKING FACTS STRAIGHT IDIOT.
stratdem 2 years ago
i'm aware that he's capable of more than tapping... i'm also aware that you are an uneducated moron unworthy of the time it takes for me to respond, all 45 seconds worth.
there are literally dozens of more "talented" or "influential" guitarists than EVH, they just don't play this gay, formulaic party rock. let's just name a few:
Al Di Meola
John McLaughlin
Paco De Lucia
Pat Metheny
Larry Coryell
Chet Atkins
Django Reinhardt
As you might notice, I excluded rock musicians to make a point....
BobMillahhh 2 years ago
asshole what eddie started and changed backin 1978 and 1979 no fucking guitarist was doing what edward was doing a did as a matter of fact guitar player international have edward van halen and jimi hendrix the two most influental guitarist of alltime and most guitarist/musicians claim eddie van halen is the biggist influence and i also agree. 1978 eddie van halen changed the whole guitar playing world. guitar would be no weres neare were it is today if it wasnt for edward van halen not hendrix.
stratdem 2 years ago
hendrix and page combined dont even add up to one edward the king of guitars van halen i also a interviews goingback to there1978 world toure and jimmy page was so fucking amazed of edward van halen that he made it apoint not to tour with them thats a fact not a opion. also have another were page says he wishes he could play like edward van halen and he personly thought that it jimi hendrix was alive he hendrix would have avoided edward van halen because he's that good the best ever he's king!
stratdem 2 years ago
SHUT UP!
ouluvme2 2 years ago
It's all about chasing sounds as the late great Les Paul said. Eddie was invited to the Les Paul tribute back in 1990(?) and played brilliantly. Les loved it, why shouldn't we?
NYVoice 2 years ago
some of les pauls interview's
on edward van halen he calls him a complete guitar genuis he creadits eddie for doing just as much changing just as much as him self BUT les paul said edward van halen took the guitar into outer space much futher than he ever could and in his opion much futher than jimi hendrix ever could. but he does creadit both hendrix and van halen for the huge and major introvative leaps and bounds they both did with the guitar. he creadits edward van halen more.
stratdem 2 years ago
and in late 1977 early 1978 when that first van halen album was released jimi hendrix did back flips in his grave and jimmy page cried for days because the bo
th knew it was all over for them. eddie van halen got the best guitarist and most valueblbe player from 1978 to 1998 20 straight years no guitarist in history come's close to that run no one and no one will not in our life time and a few years later eddie van halen recives most influental guitarist of alltime along with jimi hendrix.
stratdem 2 years ago
i saw van halens 1978 and 1979 world tour and they hasnt been a toure from any band could even comes close to thoes two toures from 1978 and 1979 and that includes zeppelin they wouldnt stand a snow ball in hell up against the great van halen back in 1978 or 1979 zepplin was touring in 1979 and they saw what van halen did to ozzy and black sabbath they destroyed sabbath ozzy was with sabbath 1978. zeppelin would have followed the same fate as sabbath if the toured with the great van halen!
stratdem 2 years ago
there 1978 album has sold over 20 million albums. there 1979 album has sold 17+ million records thats 37 million injust there first two album's from 1978 and 1979. van halen has sold atotal to date this isnt counting the new album thats coming out soon its exspecting to 15 million albums world wide witch would bring the album sales up to one hundred and 34 million albums sold plus the older albums continue to bring in 4 to 5 million a year each!

I like how DLR sings in this! it sounds like he aint singing just blahardiwahdiba with his words xD awesome perfomance though! :) VH 4 evr!
Xtrememan512 2 years ago 4
Randy Rhoads didn't have any competition, not even with Eddie. He only had two albums(minus quiet riot days)and still had the biggest respect amongst guitar heroes to be.I realize this is just my own opinion and some will agree and some won't(especially on a VH video). But great guitar playing by anyone is still great guitar playing...
38decembers 2 years ago
I dont like Eddie, i think he is idiot and off his rocker. BUT, he is way better than Randy Rhodes, because he is still alive!!! EVH never got the idea to buzz the tour bus with an airplane that he was not certified to fly...sad but true
rwoods2k 2 years ago 2
Fact, that wasn't Randy's idea, and Randy was not flying the plane.
vanhalenkid 2 years ago
I saw a VH1 interview that sharon osbourne said it was randy trying to buzz the tourbus to 'scare' Ozzy; who was sleeping in the tour bus as the plane clipped the bus and then crashed. but then again, maybe she was just lying....
rwoods2k 2 years ago
Sharon also says Randy was scared of flying. In the end all we have are the facts. Fact; Randy was not the pilot of the aircraft. Fact; In the end Randy would be nothing without Edward Van Halen to compare him to.
vanhalenkid 2 years ago
Please Eddie is WAY better than Randy Rhoads! Get a clue!
hanzwieman 2 years ago 3
I agree hanzwieman you have to hearing problems if anyone actually believes Randy Rhoads is better thanEddie Va Halen is!
happyjoe4ever 2 years ago
dude rhoads has more impact that EVH? are you kidding? thats like saying Janis Joplin had more influence on guitar than Jimi Hendrix. Your nucking futs.

this is off the sound board so of course the sound is off. Alot of eddy's distorted sound comes from the tubes as opposed to the board
CRIZ0000 2 years ago
lol the board dont have anything to with HIS sound. the board only mixes all the stuff together to keep the levels level.
what comes out of his amp is the same sound the comes from the board.
