i have realisted what christmas means to me. remember the ones you have lost, and thinking of the loved ones who belong to the person/s you have lost.my mom and i, we have always been there for eachother, this year has been so much more difficult than the rest. to me, christmas is knowing what other people have(a family, nice hot christmas dinner, all warm and loving.and thinking of the people who dont have that) love who you have lost, remember who you have and love and honour what you're given
thank you for posting this classic !!! this is one song that everyone needs to listen to . and listen close !! wow , how times have changed ... thanks again !!
Yeah it's beautiful, a tear or two falls as I listen, I have had this album for 45 years, it's scratchy-played it so much when I was teenager. Yes, time have changed drastically but we must carry on. Belated Christmas greetings and Best wishes for good Health in 2010 ( Health means everything) Greetings from Nfld. where we've had a rainy Christmas.
this was a time in America that people went to church and believed they needed to care for each other and knew their neighbors, when GOD was in this country, our homes, schools, public gatherings, everywhere! Life itself was respected and cherished.
Not only in America but also in Greece, in the UK. Just name any country you would like because this is the case nowadays. Its all about money and power.
The combination of this song, "Ringing the Bells for Jim" and "The Ballad of the Harp Weaver" from the Johnny Cash Christmas album have to be among the most touching, heart-rending songs ever written in the history of Earth.
why cant people on this planet realise that caring for other people can give more satisfaction than the selfish attitude that most people have nowadays

Christmas has been ruined with gifts because kids now days are raised for presents and not Jesus. And we still have our share of poor kids. May God bless all the kids.
at the very least people need to learn that its not about the size of the gift but the effort that the giver puts into being able to get it for you i may not be as bad off as some but its still not the best and christmas is always the time my idiot brother and sister complaign and i get in trouble for gettin pissed off :) just give me a few 3 dollar books and im fine 2 or 3 is all i need to be satisfied cause its the thought and love of family that truly matters does it not
this year, rather than gifts to family, we have decided to use that same amount of money and give to a family we know where both have cancer, she can't work and he does what he can. They have no children. We are telling family that this is THEIR contribution for the Christmas giving, like it or not. WE decide how we spend our $, not the relatives. Sorry if someone gets their feelings hurt. This is just what I am led to do this year. We may not have the chance by NEXT year!
I enjoyed reading your comment and of course it brought a tear to my eye. It is good to see that there are still people who realize the true meaning of Christmas rather than fall into all of the commercialism. May nothing but good things come your way!
Thats great to hear, my friend and me put loose change and notes when we can in to a tin. and at the end of November we open the tin and then get gift vouchers and give them to St Vinnies to put into the hampers that they give to the needy. We've been doing it for about 5 years now and it's our little bit to help others.. :)
This story sure paints a vivid picture of what it must've been like for many during those great depression years. Johnny sure did a wonderful job on this piece. I remember well it as a kid.
thats so true, when you listen to the words the family was more important. it's sad, but these days it's all about who gets the biggest, bestest present.
i've been agnostic as long as i can remember. and i celebrate christmas and i'll fight anyone who tried to take it away. Look at the symbols of christmas, more than half of them are descended from ancient pagan beliefs. Christmas is named after Jesus Christ, but the traditions are a mixture of pagan, roman, christian, non-secular, and even jewish. Note that no where in the bible is there any mention of snow, pine trees, reindeer, elves, egg nog, sleighs, or santa claus.

This brought tears to my eyes.
I decided long ago that for my kids I am going to teach them that Christmas is not all about getting gifts, but about love.

I love to hear Johnny tell about Christmas when he was growing up. They did not have much, but they had love as a family.
