  • I find Vincents opinion on life and human existence in general extremely interesting. Its so nihilistic. Hes like "Fuck everything". Just do what you want to do. You wont change the entire entity of things and the universe if you kill persons. Of course its morally reprehensible, but there is nobody to judge you. God doesnt exist. I think persons with this kinda attitude are so unpredictable and scary.

  • @Scorpzor1 I would disagree. Vincent is extremely cynical and a realist. "Fuck everything" isn't his mindset. His trade is that of a killer and he is very much a professional at it. When it comes to the job he isn't careless.

He notices flaws in other people, such as Max's life and the jazz man's cover story, but not himself. I think deep down he is a character that, as he said himself, is "indifferent". It's not "fuck everything". It's more... I don't care. I have my contracts. Professional

  • I have watched this scene a lot of time but I still don't see how it means carp diem

  • @BobMarley211 I think he's referring to the fact, that Max is too focused on saving up, getting the right clients, knowing the right people etc. Basically wanting it to be "perfect", instead of doing what Vincent says and seize the day and just go with it. And I guess Vincent is right. I mean, 12 years as a cabdriver, that's a lot of time. Also Vincent's line: "Don't you talk to me about murder", is referring to the fact that Max is slow walking his plan and basically pissing his life away

  • I don't know how Michael Mann went from this to Miami Vice--which seemed to be nothing but a yawnfest that attempted to see how many times Colin Farrell could say, "Load" in a raspy voice before it stopped being funny--but this is one of my all time favorite movies.

Aside from the gunplay and the technically ballsy move to use unedited audio/visual special effects, the script is mind blowing on psycho, socio, and philosophical levels.

I am TRULY sad Mann has no movies currently lined up.

  • Every time I see this scene it blows me out of the water. How can a fictional situation with a couple of famous ACTORS* be so moving? How can it make one reflect so much?

Tom Cruise should do more movies like this, movies that show just how incredible he is as an actor. Foxx, too. But I got to say, Cruise blew me away.

    * They are beyond actors in this, they both prove just how amazing they are at speaking not only in character, but to the audience. Best scene in modern cinema? Yep.

  • 3:54- I like that part right there where Vincent says, 'Don't you talk to me about murder.' It's like he's saying, 'Don't you dare sit there and criticize me like you have a right to judge.'

Truly compelling dialogue....you can tell that the director is dropping hints about the evils of 'casting the first stone' on other people when we know little or nothing about them.

  • @Gearistic

Ain't that the truth? It's hard coming up in the world especially when you know they'll be consequences if you fail.

  • "Someday? Someday my dream will come? One night you will wake up and discover it never happened. It's all turned around on you. It never will. Suddenly you are old.

Didn't happen, and it never will, because you were never going to do it anyway."

    I love that line.

  • @ejkddorai

'If someone had a gun to your head and said, 'You gotta tell me what's going on with this person over here or I'm gonna kill you. What is driving him, what was he thinkin'? You couldn't do it because...the would have to kill yo' ass cause you don't know what anyone else...is thinkin'. Standard parts that are in most people in you...aren't.'

I love how Max says that. They should've called this scene 'Analyze Vince' cause Max is like a shrink trying to figure Vincent out.

  • save your lives...

  • For everybody in the dark this song is called shadows on the sun by audioslave

  • Well, I can't say I like Tom Cruise. But then again, he's a very good actor. And this movie, is one of Michael Man's best. Only HEAT is better I think.

  • audio sucks

  • I wonder how much money Vincent would've had to pay if the meter was running.

  • song name ??? please

  • "All it took, was a down payment on a lincoln town car. And that girl, you can't even call that girl....What the fuck are you still doing driving a cab?"

    Just.... Wow

  • That existential rationale whereby the earth is 4.5 billion yrs old, the universe older, the planet holds over 6 billion people so what difference does it make? We are a "speck." What signifigance does anything have? Personally, I've been "there" and come out the other side. Ever hear that the "only thing that remains is character." Ever heard that said? It is true. Integrity. Character. "Standing for something." I realize it seems hoaky and a cliche but at 57 I realize it is NOT a cliche.

  • @kentucy9999 respect to you for reaching that moment in life where you've been enlightened on a deeper level. I'm 24, still working on it. Still searching.

  • @sixamsedna Be selfish six. Be selfish in a good way. You only get one life. That's it. Whatever you want to do..do it. Do your best. Do it right. For you. Not for your parents or for your girl friend or because some rock star you admire says so. Do it for you so you'll have a challenging, interesting and good life. I made quite a few mistakes in my life. The person I hurt the most was me. I was lucky enough to have been born on the right side of the tracks so I"ve had 2nd chances. DO IT FOR YOU

  • @sixamsedna "Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it's yours." - Ayn Rand

Good luck on your journey, I hope you get where you want to my friend.

  • Why do I feel smarter now knowing I am not the only one who thought this scene was special...not just an ordinary good scene. The dialogue, acting, directing...amazing. Glad to know others agree.

  • @fletchdrebon

I always thought I was one of the only ones that felt this way about some of the scenes in this movie... They are just... profound. Such an amazing dialogue, you can feel the emotion.

  • What's the song at the end? :/

  • Tom is always more interesting showing a dark side;such a fukin boring hero; Loved this scene 'the working class hero finally gets pushed too far;GO FUCK YOURSELF,VINCENT!

  • (Mind) fucking powerful scene. Why the fuck we are not making our dreams REALLY come true?

  • what the fuck are you doing still on youtube ?

  • Tom Cruise was so awesome in this movie. I love this movie.

  • Binary oppositions are prevalent in this film in being that Max and Vincent are opposite to each other and the nighttime city in Los Angeles is both treacherous and welcoming. Max, in order to survive in the face of Vincent, must adapt and overcome his situation. Vincent is left on the train; and from an earlier comment made by Vincent, an attentive viewer will wonder if the city will notice or care if he is there.

  • Sad about this scene is reality, it is a fact, who notices, we are less than speck on one in a blink. And nobody cares, they go to their jobs/lives every day, do their things, not even knowing why they do it... We are meaningles and we dont even know it.

  • @MarkustGreat it's insane isn't it? but even more insane is people's worries and fears, as this entire scene calls to mind. Max's fear, "risk all torqued down" of getting to his dream. I mean we do this to ourselves. But what can you do, I guess it's the type of things we have to deal with while living in a society with rules and social programming.

  • @sixamsedna

Ironic, isn't it? We try to follow the rules and stay in our corner hoping and praying that our reward will come to us. The painful reality is that at the end of the day when you haven nothing to show for your hard work, it starts all over again and you feel doubt. You question 'will your dream come true'? The risk-taker, the one who says 'to hell with the rules' is the one who can make a lasting impression and can benefit from his own willingness to take chances with life.

  • "Who the fuck is fanning?!?" = ownage

  • I think the only thing that bothers me about this scene is how it ends with "Go f..k yourself". Swearing is a cheap and stupid way of expressing deeper emotions and ideas. Imagine if at the end of Fight Club, instead of saying the enigmatic line "my eyes are open" Jack instead said "f..k yourself Tyler". The scene would lose so much power. I think they missed out a bit in that sense in this movie. Still, the rest of the scene is fantastic in terms of acting and dialogue!

  • @BlackySmiley I'm glad someone else feels this way, it doesn't pack as much of a punch. Perfect example w/ Fight Club. I feel that the scene went downhill the moment Vincent finished his rant/prediction of Max's life.

  • good headline for the video, manns way of saying carpe diem :)

I really like when he lets that extremely unfairly good looking tom cruise say to the cowards in us "you were never gonna do it anyway"

that line also hits you very hard

also this scene makes excellent use of digital in the dark, wouldn't have been possible to see how fast they were going with film

  • This is pure masterpiece of Drama/Thriller genre. I like Tom Cruise but never found his acting versatile. In this film he showed brilliant/phenomenal acting. Real Tom Cruise.

Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith and Mark Ruffalo were great too. I don't know why but this movie reminds me a little bit "The Brave One" with Jodie Foster. Final scenes were intriguing and just awesome

  • Sigh, please tell me you morons didnt seriously manage to turn this into a freakin religious debate ? pathetic... some people really need a life

  • i love this movie....

  • i sat dead still with my mouth open for a good half a minute, just didnt know what to think...

  • Yo homie is that my briefcase.

  • "The fuck are you still doin drivin a cab?"

    I love that line

  • I think the ending would have reached perfection if it ended w/ "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas to cement the existential undertones in the dialogue (Re: his indifference, no purpose, no reason, insignificance, in this Exact scene). It's genius how in the beginning when he first gets in the cab he alluded to a "dead passenger" in the metro in L.A for a few days and "no-one" noticed . . . Coincidentally, he ends up like that in the end - dead in the metro. . & asks, "think anyone will notice?"

  • @WarezDaBeef Michael Mann would not have ended his movie with "Dust in the Wind", at least not this movie, would have been off course from the "cool" feel. But could work in a different one.

  • I've never met Michael Mann, or Captain Ramious for that matter.

  • Los Angeles: Best city in the country!

  • Bandidos del amor - En mi Pueblo

    (Collateral Soundtrack)

At the beginning of the film

    I can't find this song!!!!!!!!!

    Somebody knows?

    Tks

  • @ToscoMaster Yeah i'm looking for this track too. Seems the only way to get ahold of it is to buy an out of print CD.

  • what's the name of the song right before the car crash?

  • shadow on the son, Audio Slave

  • thanks :-)

  • 'says the bad ass sociopath in my back seat' lol lol

  • awesome movie.....nothing more to say

  • 1:40 good dialogue between both characters...great scene, great movie

  • it reminded me american beauty and unforgiven of metallica

  • This is quite simply the most profound thing ive ever heard. This speech has inspired me to do so much

  • "...That's us. Lost in space."

  • are you seriously posting this on a movie clip on youtube?

  • Ah, the ignorance of trying to come off educated and important on YouTube comments. You fail.

  • @tomvercetti I don't know why this is a comment on this particular video, but okay.

  • @tomvercetti You and dalmanation should go watch some Christopher Hitchens videos here on youtube. I think you would enjoy those.

  • @tomvercetti I have seen religion bring people together. Maybe by accepting God we would not be so divided. The message of Jesus wasn't division. You must be a weak minded cunt. I wish I could divide you into 8 with a sword.

  • @dalmanation Just like a true brainwashed christian to mention accepting Jesus or suffer the violent consequences! That worked well for you during the crusades! YOU are the weak minded CUNT! It is ignorant assholes like you with your "my gods dick is bigger than your gods dick" mentality that causes so much suffering in the world. Was violence the message of Jesus? A fucktard like you used a sword to stab Jesus in the side. Instead, stick it up your ass mutherfucker!

  • @tomvercetti where or when have modern Christians embrace violence against non believers? they don't fucktard. I just wrote that to get a bite and I hooked up a prize sized doofus fish in you. And by the way Jesus was lanced with a spear - learn your history idiot wogboy. Weak minded cunt indeed lol hahaha. There is only one god and he shakes his piss drips on you. The only suffering is in your weak anal fixated mind. What is the shortest book in the world -the Italian book of war heros- traitor

  • @dalmanation It's been fun getting you so angry over a comment I made over a year ago that you have proven correct. For religious beliefs have obviously divided us. I have no ill will toward anyone who chooses to believe in a higher power. However, it is disturbing when the message of that higher power becomes distorted and utilized to fulfill primal human emotions like : greed, hatred and racial and religious superiority. It is only through the acceptance of each other that we become God like.

  • @tomvercetti The biggest problem with Religion is that its the worst representation of a relationship with God. Im a christian myself. I believe Jesus died and rose again and in so doing broke the chains of sin on my soul. I fully understand why people call us hypocrites and fakes cause Ive thought it myself. Dont for a second think that what "religious people" do and say is an accurate extension of God or his will. Find out who God is and what he thinks of you by yourself. Youll find hes loving

  • @BlackySmiley Thank You. Well said.

  • @tomvercetti If you ever have any questions, I can assure you Ill relay all information and messages in a reasonable relatable light. The most direct and "rude" ones are the ones that are in fact most welcome. I shudder at all the misunderstandings there are out there in the world about the Christian community and the "Christian" community so Im at your disposal.

Btw, did a youtube comment war involving deep themes just end in an adult like fashion? =D

  • 2:03 really makes me think.. the things that happen in your life you only react and notice them.. no1 else gives a shit. gotta take care of number 1

  • carpe diem! kill ppl is the best way to live the moment

  • one of the best scenes in modern film

  • micheal mann makes great movies, watch HEAT if you like this movie. as for 'carpe diem' and this movie, im with 'vincent' on this one, no one hands you anything, you have to take what you want from life, and yes, death is certain, its life thats uncertain and its up to you to make your own way in life.

  • His best work might be Thief. Look close and you see scenes from other bodies of work. LIke the hood shot in the Miami Vice series. Pilot episode. Another is when James Cann is drilling a safe. Just like Val Kilmer in HEat. When Robert D. says we walk. Mann is the best. Great Post dude. And the music, Mann loves metallic sounding music. I.E. Tangerine Dream. The Heat sound track is wonderful.

  • best scene in the movie

  • Watched this saturday night great film i like this scene the most, the music is brilliantly timed and really goes with the scene.

  • Great scene.

  • there's no such thing as good or bad in life.

everything is neutral,we,the people just name things the way that they are for us at a certain moment.

true vincent may have had some kind of regret but i don't think he would've changed his ways.

  • You're right, he wouldn't have changed.

He probably had decided a long time ago that god didn't exist and there was no real purpose in life other than survival and pursuing his own happiness.

He probably had realized this while in the military, and at that point, killing was all that he was really good at.

There might be some regret over the path that he had chosen, but then he reminds himself that ultimately there is no point in caring..

This movie was awesome, but depressing.

  • my favorite line is and i quote,' man gets on the cta here in L.A. and dies. . . . .

    think anyone will notice?

  • Great scene. There is lots of scenes i dont understand in this movie. Maybe Vincent is struggling with himself about his life and all that. When you realize that your life has been regrettable and full of bad choices and especially when somebody reminds of your past and strikes home.. that is something unbelievable.

2:50 just look at vincent's face

  • you make great observations that I have picked up on myself, and concur with you on. 3:56 also contains a great look from vincent, as he tears up as he is talking to max.

  • Great writing. Some of my favorite lines of all time:

    "......someday you are old"

"Didn't happen, and never will because you were never going to do it anyway"

  • thank you so much for uploading this scene. It made me remember just how philosophical this film is despite its' plot and content. The question Vincent asks... get you to the core

  • try to ask your selfs this question WHAT TO U HAVE TO LOOSE BEFORE YOU DIE? that's a very deep question. "why do we exist anyway" that's what Darwin said

  • Actually, it was Nietzsche. As far as what do you have to lose...? It was Dostoyevsky that said, "If God is not, then all things are permissable." The logical outworking of what happens when someone rejects the proposition of God.

  • nietzche and dostoievsky never saw this movie or seen the internet or youtube the world changhed my friend since nietzche or dostoievsky and i'm not gonna let them tell me what to think it's true or false don't get me wrong i respect what u said but we have different opinions phylosophers books belong to the past i want u to give a good argument cause i may be wrong or wright either way what vincent says it's kind of true that's my opinion looking forward for a good reply!!!!

  • I appreciate the candor and civility of your response. Please remember, my friend, that human nature hasn't changed at all. Nietzsches and Dostoyevskys philosophies are just as valid today as they were at their inception. Culture changes, but circumstances, and human experience remain consistent. Malcolm Muggeridge said it well... "All new news is old news, happening to new people."

  • Such an underrated movie. This film speaks volumes to me.

  • does anyone know the rock track the plays when they show detective fanning for the first time driving in that black car?

  • Shadow on the sun- audioslave

The version in the film is only found on the soundtrack, and its so much better than album version.

  • commando was pretty awesome too

  • Very Philosophical Scene. I believe it is one of the best scenes in film history, just simply because it says so much about Human Nature and the way of the Universe.

  • You are correct, Mike- this is one of the best scenes in the movies. I'm always struck by how, in an only fairly good movie, this scene, the scene where they pass the dog in the road, and the ending where Vincent dies are three of the best scenes in movies recently.

  • the dog in the street was purely filler, Mann admitted that himself in an interview... the scene in the Jazz Club tho? Insane. They make Vincent's character so complex in such a short amount of time and never fully explain what his deal is!

  • I really would like to know how much he got saved in 12 years

  • By the look on his face, you can tell it's not much, or any at all.

  • Life is meaningless. It's ruled by chance and coincidences. Sometimes people path's cross and a weak-spirited taxi driver can manage to kill a trained hitman by pure luck!!

  • is there anything better to be driving in LA at nite listening AUDIOSLAVE?...rules!

  • Right on bro

  • I just love this whole movie all together. It really is one of those films that makes you question your place and purpose in this life.

For anyone who feels the same, i found a video on you tube. Its a time lapse video if LA during the night with many locations in it. It is set to some really truly haunting music. Just search for AMAZING TIME LAPSE VIDEO and it should be the first one.

  • this is probably one of my top 10 scenes of all time. Its juist so badass oscar worthy.

  • This scene stops you cold in thought and makes you pay attention to what is being said.

In the universe of indifference and nothingness...only on earth things seem to matter, to us.

We weren't given a reason for existing...we only have a choice to deal with how we exists...for as long as we do until we return to the way the rest of the universe proceeds - ala death.

  • I agree, what the f... are you still doing driving a cab. This makes people that think about success everyday even more susceptible toward firing there managers and bosses. I love this scene.

  • tom cruise played a great badass role llike denzel washington in training day

  • wow. amazing. probably the most intense scene ive ever seen in a movie. "what the fuck are you still doing drving a cab?" damn what a powerful line. hits you like a truck. i think they shouldve ended the movie after they crashed. that wouldve been way better. but man, this scene makes up for all the flaws in this movie. absolutely amazing.

  • What the fuck are you still driving a cab?

  • Somebody Please Tell Me What This Song Is Called, The Spiritual Noise In The Background.

  • The song playing in the background is on the Collateral Soundtrack - called "Car Crash" By Antonio Pinto

    Hope this helps :)

  • Is that the track being played when he starts shouting at Vincent too?

  • It starts right when max says: "what's with you?"

  • imdb,com/title/tt0369339/soundtrack

    one of these!!! :-)

  • the track being played when the taxidriver starts shouting at Vincent is "shadow on the sun" from "audioslave"

  • Max is the kind of a guy who is afraid of risk, he feels safe where he is, he maybe want but never woould change it. But the idea, his dream, of creating something is exemplary for everyone who just lives in a world full of illusions and dreams. We are all being hypnoticed by daitime TV and we were never gonna do it anyway because we are afraid of it. The world, being created by TV, is much more safer!

  • Exactly! It's a shame that such true words had to be spoken by a murderous sociopath.

  • Hey guys, have a short questions for you, what is a Barcalounger?

  • It is a very soft single sofa that can open into a lazy seat when you push back on it.

  • Thanks man, that very nice of you!

  • people can qoute and post whatever they like, who the fuck are you?

  • Oh no! We wouldn't want to people to actually discuss the scene and it's content. That'd be too much(!) ¬_¬

  • why dont you stfu, you are less then nothing anyway. Nobody cares about you. Grow up already. Damn.

  • wtf are you still doing driving a cab??..what the fuck are you still doing driving a cab....each one of us has dreams..but what the fuck are we still doing driving a cab. The essence of it is ..what the fuck are we still doing driving a cabs

  • This scene is really fantastic. It always tears me up, because on the one hand, Vincent is right. Were just specks on a rock in space, dying all the time, horrible deaths, and nobody notices. Its enough reason to be a cold and selfish killer in such a cruel world.

But then Max talks about how, even being asked with a gun put to his head, he wouldnt be able to tell what anyone else is thinking. He has no empathy whatsoever, and I think it hits home for Vincent.

  • fantastic scene.

  • Such a great scene from a great movie. I think the message is relevant to many peoples lives.

  • "What the fuck are you still doing driving a cab???!!!"

  • Such a powerful scene, Mann really knows how to create an atmosphere of existential tension.

  • "theres just a badass sociopath sitting in my back seat"

  • tom cruise does such a good job in this movie; its hard for me not to think that in real life he's nuttier than the character he portrays in the movie.

  • i can tell ya...my girlfriend died of cancer, i was thinking to moving LA. we had planed to get married, start a new life with her...but never happened, i'd waste my time, talkin', makin' plans, everything, but i didn't...i know exacly what's Cruise said...never a movie seems to me so real...

  • Me too. Shakespeare said in Romeo And Juliet: "we are not owner of our plans".

  • It can't mean much from a total stranger, but for whatever it's worth my friend, you have my deepest sympathy.

  • Thanx very much...now you're mention it, that is something I haven't recived for some time, thanx again.

  • "slow the hell down"lol

  • get with it...millions of galaxies of hundreds of billions of stars and a blink on one...thats us...u..me...the cop....who notices

  • wtf are you still doing drivin a cab ?

  • That is one of the most realist scenes i have ever seen on film. That scene alone should've gave Cruise a oscar nomination, and im not really a fan of his work.

Scene makes so much sense and really sends a message to us ALL.

  • i love this scene its one of my all time favorites ive been lookin for this since the movie came out thanks alot

  • By the way, thanks for uploading a nervechiiling scene OTHER than the Fever scene. A nice scene that a lot of kids seem to have uploaded to shit. Collateral has a lot of other high-class scenes, like this one.

  • You're welcome.

  • I actually find this scene more enigmatic than educational. The importance of chasing dreams is something we hear almost daily, but I wonder why Max was so obsessed with his limo business having to be "perfect". It's just like Vincent says. Why IS he still driving a cab? And by the way. I once read that the expression "Carpe Diem" mostly refers to seizing the moments in a purely SEXUAL manner.

  • What like seizing somone dragging them into the bushes, knocking them out then having sex with them?

  • You wish! Read my reply to kringz.

  • 1817, from L., "enjoy the day," lit. "pluck the day (while it is ripe)," an aphorism from Horace ("Odes" I.xi), from PIE *kerp- "to gather, pluck, harvest."

what the fuck does that have to do with sex?

  • I read it in a history book. Horace were actually referring to "seizing the moment" as in having sudden sex whenever the opportunity arises. Between partners, of course! Though as of today, we have interpreted Carpe Diem in a different manner, as in seizing any moment.

THAT'S what the fuck it has to do with sex. That's what I've read anyway.

  • That scene is also awesome. best movie ever!

  • Gosh i love that scene, thanks you for sharing.

  • Tom cruise is a better bad guy than a good one.

  • i wish someone would post the whole movie now=)..its so good!

  • I love this movie,even if I don't care for Tom....

  • Definitely one of the all time movie villains I was hoping would live even though Im not a cruise fan

  • Michael Mann is a great, great director. Nobody sets a mood like him.

  • All actors want to work with him. In the beginning, for just 5 seconds, you can see Jason Statham.

  • jamie fox's character reminds me of me this is a very inspirational scene for me thanks for posting it.

  • Yeah, he reminds me of myself too. Tons of good girls around me and me wasting time and doing nothing. Pathetic, I wish I'll do something about it.

  • @JelinekFS If there is a want to improve, even if its sometimes quite in the back of your head, all you need to do is nurture it. Start small but START SOMEWHERE. Don't just think about it. Continuously improve on yourself: strengthen your strengths and improve your weaknesses. You can do it, man.

  • @CaptainSpork7

Haha, I didnť expect anyone to reply to that comment when its 2 years old :-) Thanx for your advice, mate, I appreciate it, even when 2 years have already passed.

  • i love this scence, this whole movie is amazing. plus tom cruise as a bad guy is fuckin awesome.

i fell for vincent hard core

"says the bad ass sociopath in my back seat"

  • "millions of galaxies of hundreds of millions of stars and a speck on 1 in a blink. That's us, lost in space. A cop, you me, who notices."

Good dialouge but also very true when it comes to our place in space. Everything we live for and do is just a blink in geological time. Not even a second.

  • dam that was some intense dialoge really makes you take a different approach on life

  • This Scene is Awesome. You just gotta keep pushin' yourself forward and forward and forward. Luv that movie.

  • Incredible scene and amazing dialogue. Phenomenal performances from both Tom and Jamie. I love Tom's reaction when Max hits a nerve about Vincent growing up as an institutionalized raised guy. Michael Mann is 1 of the best filmmakers ever. The score in this scene is also very intense. This is 1 of the best films ever, period.

  • Yes, thanks for posting this. Although scenes like these are faaaar from as good as they should be on Youtube, itäs still great, and very deep.
