this is a fantastic video, this may seem odd but how thick is your skipping rope? I use the "Reebok Professional speed rope" do you think I should purchase a thinner rope, if so how do you know what length to purchase?
I just started skipping this week for the first time. I find I bring my legs up too high and sometimes after maybe 10-15 skips the rope ends up getting caught in my legs. Any tips?
i would say your timing is off. what your doing is speeding up your rope and trying to compensate by trying to get your legs to follow suit. or, something which could be another factor, is your rope is too short. if your in the uk, and your under 5'9", make a trip to argos and buy the reebok skipping rope. its good and heavy and will improve timing. i bet if you skip with this you'll find it easier. i like it alot. its what i use.
@DaveyLoosesWeight Thanks for the reply. Since I posted here last I have made some progress. Now I can skip and keep it up in bursts of maybe 40-60s so I am building it up bit by bit. I got a 9ft Excellerator speed rope. So far so good, although I seem to be generating a lot of stares from guys and girls at the gym when skipping. I don't see anyone else skipping their either.
if your making progess from your last comment, then i would say that your mistakes were probably due to your fitness levels ( maybe ), and also, being new to skipping can take time to get it right. but overall, in skipping, alot has to do with the condition of your legs, and how good your cardiovascular system is. but all in all, its mostly about practice.
I've been skipping for a while now, and about a month ago I switched from a heavy rope to a speed rope. I've noticed I get a pain in my shoulder when I use the new rope. Any ideas what this could be?
My guess is that you are using too much shoulder when you skip. Combined with a faster and more frequent turn a speed rope provides, your shoulder is probably getting overworked. Relax your shoulders and rotate from the wrist. Lay off the rope till your shoulder has recovered.
great vid! ive watched all the videos on youtube about skipping tips and yours was the best becuase it was simple and step by step where overs just jump into things without explaining.
can you add another video with more complex skipping moves as i have mastered most of these moves on this video!
@lilgirlsj Yeah, I get that, but skipping on a mat isn't really practical. Mats are softer, so you get less rebound, less balance, and you can't really skip to your full potential on softer ground. I have never had any knee problems from skipping as I used to have from running. A good skipper should be really light on their toes so knees shouldn't be put under any stress.
I was limping from the pain I am worried because I can't be limping I have places to go and places to be it was painful go and laugh ant someone else I was asking something seriously because I shouldn't have pain like that at my age.
After 2 days of jump roping standard then one foot at a time I got a werid pain in my left buttock and couldn't walk very well and do things like running. SItting and standing still didn't hurt it but walking and running did so all I've been doing is cardio on the bike and arc trainer at my gym did I pull or strain a muscle? Or develped siatica? Right now I'm pain free and worried to try jumping again
Great video. I can do the regular skipping, with a little front-foot, backfoot shuffling easily, I tried the one foot at a time after seeing this video. It's quite hard on my lower shin muscle! (don't know what it's called). My timing was off, and I kept having the rope hit my planted foot after five or six rotations, but I'm getting better. Also did a couple of cross-overs which made my day!
wow your explainings for the double jump and for the cross over were very useful! I'm not english so I didn't understand too much, but your moves had me understood! thanx!
Excellent instruction, I've been skipping for a couple of months now but was constantly pony skipping. Went to the gym today, tried it out slow and got it right finally.

Great video, thanks very much. The art of skipping has eluded me all my life, but you've made it easy to grasp.
I bought a rope yesterday with a built in calorie counter and it registered about 20cals for one minute of skipping. Would you say that's about right?

@Dahl4life Why? IT's good to have the mat, they support your knee and ankle.
